Yamuna Expressway is a 6-lane (extendable to 8 lanes), 165 km long, controlled-access
expressway, connecting Greater Noida with Agra in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is
India's longest six-lane controlled-access expressway stretch. The total project cost was
128.39 billion (US$1.9 billion). It was conceived with the idea of reducing the travel time
between Delhi and Agra. But the project could not start because of a change of government in
the state in 2003 and also it wasn't financially viable back in 2003. The project was
reactivated in 2007 when Mayawati regained power and was renamed Yamuna Expressway.

The 165 Km long Yamuna Expressway has been developed by the Jaypee Group under
Public-Private Partnership. The Concession Agreement between TEA and JIL (Jaiprakash
Industries Limited) as the Concessionaire was executed on 7th Feb, 2003. The Yamuna
Expressway Project, was formally inaugurated on 09 Aug, 2012 by the Uttar Pradesh Chief
Minister Mr Akhilesh Yadav and thrown open to the public. The total project cost is approx
Rs 13000 crores. The concession period is 36 years. In May 2012, Jaypee Group informed
state government officials that construction of the expressway had been completed. The
Yamuna Expressway was formally inaugurated on 9 August 2012 by Chief Minister Akhilesh
Yadav, via videoconference from Lucknow, about two years behind of its original target
completion date.

In a first for military aviation in India, Indian Air Force on May 21, 2015 successfully landed
a French Dassault Mirage-2000 on the Yamuna Expressway near Raya village, Mathura, at
about 6.40 am. The drill was part of more elaborate trials to see how many other highways
can be used for emergency landing of defence aircraft. The next stretch on sight is three km
of the Agra-Lucknow Greenfield Expressway.

The Expressway cuts in half the travel time from New Delhi to Agra, the city that is home to
Indias top tourist attraction, the Taj Mahal. Apart from providing a fast travel corridor
between New Delhi and Agra, the Expressway opens up avenue for industrial and urban
development of the region. The Yamuna Expressway corridor is bound to have huge impact
on the economic and industrial growth not only of Uttar Pradesh but adjoining states e.g.
Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana in the coming years.

The primary objectives of the proposed expressway were stated as follows:

To provide a fast moving corridor to minimize the travel time

To connect the main townships / commercial centres on the eastern side of Yamuna
To ensure development of adjoining area
To relieve NH-2 which is already congested and runs through the heart of cities like
Faridabad, Ballabgarh and Palwal

The Yamuna Expressway along with the existing NH-2 and NH-91 and interconnectivity
between all three of them will form a good network of roads which in turn, open up a vast
area of all-round development.

The development took place in three phases-

Phase I: Expressway Stretch between Greater Noida and proposed Taj International Aviation
Hub (near village Jewar on the southern tip of District Gautam Budh Nagar).

Phase II: Expressway Stretch between proposed Taj International Aviation Hub and an
intermediate destination between proposed Taj International Aviation Hub and Agra.

Phase III: Expressway Stretch between intermediate destination and Agra.

As per the provision of Concession Agreement, Concessionaire have rights for collecting tolls
during the concession period of 36 years and also rights for land development of about 25
million square meters of land along the proposed Expressway. Land including 100 meters for
the Expressway at five or more locations of which one location shall be in Noida/Greater
Noida with an area of 5 million Square meters along the Expressway for commercial,
amusement, industrial, institutional and residential development would be offered on
acquisition cost on lease for the period of 90 years.

Yamuna Expressway is the most hi-tech highway in the country today. It is built with an
intention to provide the commuters with a safe, secure and convenient way to travel between
Agra & Greater Noida; the Yamuna Expressway boasts of having state of art Intelligent
Transportation Systems to facilitate these objectives. All three Main Toll Plazas (MTP)
equipped with best-in-class RF-ID based Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) System, for non-
stop passage of vehicles with pre-paid tags. Emergency Call Boxes (ECB) at every 2 kms on
either side of the Expressway - Emergency Call Boxes(ECB) have been placed at every
2Kms to provide the road user an emergency communication channel to seek help in case og
emergency. These call boxes will have hands-free operation and will be able to connect the
user instantly to the control centre to seek assistance. One of its kind, 12m wide Variable
Message Sign Boards for display of information and warnings on weather, speed restrictions,
traffic load, diversion etc.

The Yamuna Expressway project has been a boon for real estate developers, particularly in
the areas of Noida and Greater Noida, as the land availability in these regions has also been
limited, in the past half of the year. Along with the upcoming project such as Jaypee Sports
City project, F1 track etc., this project will bring in a new wave of development. In 2012,
traffic was not much on the stretch, because people relatively chose the travel on the
conventional routes, but, with the peripheral developments and infrastructure growth, more
traffic is expected on the expressway. But, it is surely one of the biggest accomplishments in
infrastructure growth in India and testifies the efficiency of PPP models for developments.
