GLOBAL CHALLENGE
2012 : WORKPLACE OF THEFUTURE

www.fentressarchitects.com
About The Fentress Global Challenge is an annual international competition created to engage students worldwide in
the exploration of future design possibilities in public architecture. For the Second annual competition, students
are invited to envision the Workplace of the Future. Workplace research confirms that space management is a
powerful tool. Office environments designed to deliver optimal employee experience will, in turn, offer the greatest
operational value. These returns are far beyond financial; they promote performance, productivity and innovation.
Our economy relies on productivity, so it is important to evaluate the most cost-effective, space-effective and
operationally-effective workplace.

Could the hours spent
in a formal office be a
thing of the past?

Conventional work patterns are changing dramatically in response to expanding global markets. Four generations
of people are working side-by-side, bringing different work-style and life-style demands. Footprint consolidation
is happening everywhere, and new technologies constantly redefine commercial office space. Requirements for
workplaces have become more demanding. Information technology, energy costs, environmental quality, employee
productivity and occupant health were of little concern when many of todays buildings were designed. Today they
are of vital importance, and understanding the fundamentals behind these demands will help designers create
workplaces that enhance the work experience.

Workplace The beginning of large-scale work environments occurred after WWII. In the early 1950s, office environments
shared many characteristics with factories. They were places for processing paper-based information. Office design
Evolution was more company centric.

From the 1990s to today, employees have grown more demanding. They want greater control over their work
environment, including preferences for natural light, ventilation and temperature control. People are now recognized
as assets, and talent retention is of greater importance.
