Obstruction fading
occurs when the ray bends upwards due to the k-factor decreases
affects all channels simultaneously, but occurs seldom on path design with the recommended clearance

Multipath fading
occurs due to layering of the atmosphere
frequency selective fading if large time delay between direct and reflected path
flat fading if small delay between direct and reflected path
Surface structure of the earth from agriculture fields, forests, water from lakes and sea

Duct fading
results from propagation through ducts especially if either the transmitter or receiver is located in the duct
may also cause multipath fading

1.2 Introduction product family

Introduction to the 9600LSY Radio System Family

The 9600LSY digital radio relay system belongs to the second generation of
the Alcatel SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy ) radio family that has been
developed aiming to match the demand of high quality microwave
transmission links.
A 9600LSY radio system can be in fact utilized either with multiplex section
termination (MST) or regenerator section termination (RST) functionality.

The family supports radio transmission of STM0 (51 Mbps) and STM1 (155
Mbps) signals as well STM4 (622 Mbps) or STM16 (2.4 Gbps) connections,
using a proper number of radio frequency channels in various configurations.

A full set of synchronous and plesiochronous interfaces is available.

1.2 Introduction to the system

MAIN FEATURES

The radio System of the 9600LSY family are used to transmit high
capacity, high quality radio link signal in accordance with the standards ruling
the SynchronousDigital Hierarchy,as defined by the outstanding international
Organization, including CCIT, CCIR, and ETSI, with a specific reference to the
TMN ( Telecommunications Management Network) standars.

This system can be used to transport telephone, data, and image channels in
SDH networks, and is able to perform only RST ( Regeneration Section
Termination ) funtion.

They can also be used to back-up fiber optic system, wherever so necessary.

Total Interworking with other kinds of network elements present in the

network aiming to make the network indipendent from transmission medium.

19 | FLT Products | April 2008 All Rights Reserved Alcatel-Lucent 2008,

1.2 Introduction to the system

Full integration in the Alcatel network managment platform able to

manage different types of network elements belonging to different
technologies: MSN, LT, microwaves radio, optical systems and submarine
systems. 9600LSY is included in Alcatel release plan, garanteeing consistent
feature support and allowing, in case of existing SDH NEs, not to change
TMN platform, thus saving investements already done.

The equipment can be inserted in the SDH network as Radio regenerator

to be easily introduced in trasparent mode without affecting any modification
to the network.

ATPC
The 9600 LSY Transmitter is fitted with the ATPC.
The ATPC system is based on a control loop of the power transmitted
between a transmitter and a receiver in a radio link.
The receiver furnishes through the AGC voltage the information of the
received power to the ATPC controller; it compares the voltage with
threshold values ( presettable by software ) and according to the
obtained result send through to the ATPC controller on the remote
station of the link the orders of increase /decrease of transmitted
power.
These orders are processed and therefore transferred to the associated
transmitter.

1.8 LSY Functional Description
Protections:
Two protection types are available for the 9600 LSY systems:

Radio Protection (RPS)

The high capacity long haul radio systems utilises, to perform the automatic protection of
the radio channels, a switching device moving the channel to be protected on a spare
bearer (standby channel). The function, implemented on the RX side is N+1 hitless type; it
is transparent to other types of protection and in particular to network protection.

The switch supplies the protection of the link either in case of failure of the equipment or
for deterioration the quality performances of the link. In this last case the EW( Early
Warning) and LBER ( low ber ) criteria are utilised to achieve an error free changeover.

Network Protection

For network protection the radio system in regenerator section configuration will be fully
transparent to MSP channel and criteria allowing the MSNs present in the network to
perform the network protection activity. On the other hand the radio system in terminal
with MSN configuration implements, as embedded function, network protection features
like Trail protection and subnetwork protection (MSP, SNCP etc.).

General equipping rules

the number associated to TRX is related to the channel (0 9);

each TRX is associated to the RRA, MD and PSU group having the same logical
number (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7);

Only 8 TRXs can be equipped at most. The slot positions that must be used
depend on the system configuration and the equipping rules follow those
relative to the associated RRA, MD and PSU groups, it means that:

with single polarization configurations, TRIs must be equipped in the

logical number sequence 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. Thus, in these
configurations, TRIs 8 and 9 are never equipped;

with double polarization configurations, TRIs must be equipped in the

sequence 0, 9, .
Thus, in these configurations, TRIs 4 and 5 are never equipped.

REMOTE INVENTORY:
The remote inventory function permit the operator to retrive information about any
card or module Present on the equipment.

The available information, written in 64*16 bit EPROM on board ( RI device ), is:
construction date, code number, maker name, card type, etc.

The remote inventory function is present in all cards.

The RI can be also present on some sub-modules assembled on the board ( such as
optical modules, Micro controllers and so on.

The relevant data are tranported by the CAN bus and are managed by the system
controller unit, Which besides the information retrived from the RI devices , add the
slot identifier (ID) information.

The microcontroller on each unit manages the remote inventory, with the exception of
power supply unit and battery filter unit, that are supported by ESC microcontroller.

The remote inventory of sub-units (CAN COMB sub-units ,TPH device and optical
interface) are supported by the respective agent microcontroller.

Transceiver shelf equipment (slot numbering and board types and
General equipping rules numbering)
the number associated to TRI is related to the channel (0 9);
each TRI is associated to the RRA, MD and PSU group having the same logical number
(0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7);
Only 8 TRIs can be equipped at most. The slot positions that must be used depend on
the system configuration
and the equipping rules follow those relative to the associated RRA, MD and PSU
groups, it means that:
with single polarization configurations, TRIs must be equipped in the logical
number sequence 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. Thus, in these configurations, TRIs 8 and 9
are never equipped;
with double polarization configurations, TRIs must be equipped in the sequence 0,
9, .... Thus, in these configurations, TRIs 4 and 5 are never equipped.

2.8 Transceiver unit
Transceiver assembly
The transceiver operates from 4 to 13 GHz. Different P/Ns are envisaged according to the
operating frequency and the modulation (64QAM or 128QAM).
Each transceiver assembly is equipped with the following internal modules:
transmiter unit
receiver unit
local oscillator unit
transceiver controller unit
DC/DC converter.
The transmitter unit includes an IF amplifier, a SSB up converter, a local oscillator and a
RF power amplifier. The utilization of a high rejection SSB up-converter permits to avoid
the use of a RF filter at the output, allowing a wide-band utilization of the unit.
The Automatic Transmitted Power Control (ATPC) function is included in the transceiver in
order to decrease the Tx power output and dissipation in case of normal propagation and
to push the maximum power up in deep fading conditions. This function may be disabled
and the level of the transmitted RF power can be manually set by Craft Terminal
configuration.
The receiver unit includes a low noise RF preamplifier, an automatic imagine rejection
down converter, an IF filter, a main amplifier with AGC and a local oscillator.
The local oscillator unit includes a VCO, a Synthesizer, a Switch and a Multiplier.

145 | FLT Products | April 2008 All Rights Reserved Alcatel-Lucent 2008,
2.8 Transceiver unit
The synthesizer is a narrow band loop filter used PLL function
The multiplier is composed by a distortion circuit, band - pass filter, amplifier and a
power splitter.
In the transmitter the LO can run only in Master configuration,at the start up the switch
is connected at the external VCO and only when its VCO is locked, the switch has
connected to the internal VCO.
In the receiver the LO ( in Master configuration ) runs with its internal VCO;while ( in
Slave configuration ) runs external VCO.
The transceiver controller unit includes a microcontrolller that controls all the
functions of transceiver. ( alarms, commands, atpc, presetting and remote inventory ).
etc.
The microcontroller , by means a transceiver CAN BUS, is connected to SYSCO UNIT in
the base band shelf.
The DC / DC CONVERTER UNIT receives primary voltage from the shelf backpanel and
supplies to Transceiver controller unit all the necessary voltages.
A space diversity receiver, to be used in junction with a baseband signal combiner, is also
available as countermeasure to the selective fading due to the multipath propagation of
the signal.
The advantages obtained by the baseband combiner utilization are mainly due to a higher
reliability, thanks to the adopted digital technology, to the possibility of recovering very
high delays between the two received signals and to the very reduced signature of the
combined signal.

- Forced switch priority 2

- Automatic switch priority 3 (this is the normal operation without Manual Operation)

- Manual switch priority 4 (lowest)

LOCKOUT

The Lockout command can be activated on the protected channel only.

The Lockout command is equivalent to simulate the channel efficient. By selecting the protected channel and entering Lockout command the
traffic will never occupy the protecting channel (in this case the protected channel will be always active). If the Lockout command is entered
when the traffic is occupying the protecting channel, the traffic immediately will be removed from the protecting channel without activate the
alignment procedure.

FORCE TO

The Force To command can be activated on the protected channel only.

The Force To command is equivalent to simulate the channel fault. By selecting the protected channel and entering the Force To protecting
command the traffic is switched over the protecting channel independently of the alarms, if any, on the protecting channel.

MANUAL TO

The Manual To command can be activated both on the protected or on the protecting channel.

- If the protected channel is active by selecting the protected channel and entering the Manual To protecting command the
protecting channel becomes active after the automatic alignment.

- If the protecting channel is active by selecting the protecting channel and entering the Manual To protected command the
protected channel becomes active after the automatic alignment.

N.B. The switch over takes place if the destination channel is in a condition better than the channel to be switched because the priority
of the Manual Switch is less than the priority of the Automatic Switch.

For each command, the relevant Release command is provided.

and remote). Note that the colors represent the linked end-point of the two NE; if the local TX is blue, for example,
the remote receiver has the same color.

The top of the screen offers all the characteristics present in the current measurement:

the radio port item gives the symbolic name associated to the radio channel that you are
analyzing

the sample time item indicates the frequency used to send the measure requests to NE;

the start time item is the first request time;

the stop time item is the interval time selected in the previous parameters window, added to start

PM Approach (cntd)
BER and Errored Block Approaches

Two approaches can be used to estimate the quality of a signal :

the first uses the BIP code to compute the Bit Error Rate (BER)

the second uses the BIP code to evaluate the Errored Block

335 | FLT Products | April 2008 All Rights Reserved Alcatel-Lucent 2008,
10.1 Introduction
PM Approach
BER Approach:

This method is the same used in PDH networks

It fits the case of random distribution of errors, but provides very poor indications when burst
distributed errors are present

Errored Block Approach

This method focuses on various portions of the digit stream. It is not interested just in the
amount of errors occurred, but on the amount of errors occurred in a certain portion of the
signal.

This approach shows good results for any type of error distribution.

This new approach was adopted for SDH networks and, as a consequence, new quality
parameters based on error block events have been defined.

336 | FLT Products | April 2008 All Rights Reserved Alcatel-Lucent 2008,
10.1 Introduction
Block definition

A block is a set of consecutive bits associated with a specific path or section.

Each block is monitored by means of the relevant BIP-n code performing n independent parity
checks

A block is assumed to be errored if at least one of the n checks fails

Block size for SDH sections

Error Performance events

Errored Block (EB): A block in which one or more bits are in error.

Errored Second (ES): A one second period with one or more errored blocks or at least
one defect.

Severely Errored Second (SES): A one-second period which contains at least 30% (for
path layer) errored blocks or at least one defect. SES is a subset of ES.

Background Block Error (BBE): An errored block not occurring as part of a SES.

338 | FLT Products | April 2008 All Rights Reserved Alcatel-Lucent 2008,
10.1 Introduction
Near End or/and Far End PM

Near End PM: the performance monitoring parameters are evaluated by means of the
inherent Error Detection Code, (B1).

Far End PM: the remote performance monitoring is not supported because the radio
equipment operates on the Regenerator Section only.

Near end counters are supported in receive direction of the signal.

339 | FLT Products | April 2008 All Rights Reserved Alcatel-Lucent 2008,
10.1 Introduction
Availability

Each direction of the section can be in one of these two states:

Available state
Unavailable state:
Unavailable Second (UAS): number of seconds during an unavailability
period
Unavailable Time Report (UAT report): a period of unavailable time
begins at the onset of 10 consecutive SES events. When an unavailable
period is detected this report is sent.

Near End Unavailable Second (NEUAS/UAS): An Unavailable Second is

a second which is part of the Unavailable Time.

10.1 Introduction
Criteria for a single direction

A period of unavailable time begins at the onset of 10 consecutive SES events. These ten seconds are considered to

be part of unavailable time. A new period of available time begins at the onset of ten consecutive non-SES events.

These ten seconds are considered to be part of available time
