ELIEWIESELwontheNobelPeacePrizein1986.HeisgenerallyacceptedasawitnesstotheJewish
"Holocaust,"and,morespecifically,asawitnesstothelegendaryNaziexterminationgaschambers.The
ParisdailyLeMondeemphasizedatthetimethatWieselwasawardedtheNobelPrizebecause:(note1)

Theselastyearshaveseen,inthenameofsocalled"historicalrevisionism,"theelaborationoftheses,
especiallyinFrance,questioningtheexistenceoftheNazigaschambersand,perhapsbeyondthat,of
thegenocideoftheJewsitself.

ButinwhatrespectisElieWieselawitnesstotheallegedgaschambers?Bywhatrightdoesheaskusto
believeinthatmeansofextermination?Inanautobiographicalbookthatsupposedlydescribeshis
experiencesatAuschwitzandBuchenwald,henowherementionsthegaschambers.(note2)Hedoes
indeedsaythattheGermansexecutedJews,but...byfirebythrowingthemaliveintoflamingditches,
beforetheveryeyesofthedeportees!Nolessthanthat!

HereWieselthefalsewitnesshadsomebadluck.ForcedtochoosefromamongseveralAlliedwar
propagandalies,hechosetodefendthefirelieinsteadoftheboilingwater,gassing,orelectrocutionlies.In
1956,whenhepublishedhistestimonyinYiddish,thefireliewasstillaliveincertaincircles.Thislieisthe
originofthetermHolocaust.TodaythereisnolongerasinglehistorianwhobelievesthatJewswereburned
alive.Themythsoftheboilingwaterandofelectrocutionhavealsodisappeared.Onlythegasremains.

ThegassingliewasspreadbytheAmericans.(note3)TheliethatJewswerekilledbyboilingwateror
steam(specificallyatTreblinka)wasspreadbythePoles.(note4)Theelectrocutionliewasspreadbythe
Soviets.n(note5)

Thefirelieisofundeterminedorigin.Itisinasenseasoldaswarpropagandaorhatepropaganda.Inhis
memoir,Night,whichisaversionofhisearlierYiddishtestimony,WieselreportsthatatAuschwitztherewas
oneflamingditchfortheadultsandanotheroneforbabies.Hewrites:(note6)

Notfarfromus,flameswereleapingfromaditch,giganticflames.Theywereburningsomething.Alorry
drewupatthepitanddelivereditsloadlittlechildren.Babies!Yes,Isawitsawitwithmyowneyes...
Thosechildrenintheflames.(IsitsurprisingthatIcouldnotsleepafterthat?Sleephasfledfrommy
eyes.)

Alittlefartherontherewasanotherditchwithgiganticflameswherethevictimssuffered"slowagonyinthe
flames."Wiesel'scolumnwasledbytheGermanstowithin"threesteps"oftheditch,thento"twosteps."
"Twostepsfromthepitwewereorderedtoturntotheleftandmadetogointoabarracks."
Anexceptionalwitnesshimself,Wieselassuresusofhishavingmetotherexceptionalwitnesses.Regarding
BabiYar,aplaceinUkrainewheretheGermansexecutedSovietcitizens,amongthemJews,Wieselwrote:

Later,Ilearnfromawitnessthat,formonthaftermonth,thegroundneverstoppedtremblingandthat,
fromtimetotime,geysersofbloodspurtedfromit.

Thesewordsdidnotslipfromtheirauthorinamomentoffrenzy:first,hewrotethem,thensome
unspecifiednumberoftimes(butatleastonce)hehadtorereadthemintheproofsfinally,hiswordswere
translatedintovariouslanguages,asiseverythingthisauthorwrites.

ThatWieselpersonallysurvived,was,ofcourse,theresultofamiracle.Hesaysthat:(note8)

InBuchenwaldtheysent10,000personstotheirdeathseachday.Iwasalwaysinthelasthundrednear
thegate.Theystopped.Why?

In1954FrenchscholarGermaineTillionanalyzedthe"gratuitouslie"withregardtotheGerman
concentrationcamps.Shewrote:(note9)

Thosepersons[whogratuitouslylie]are,totellthetruth,muchmorenumerousthanpeoplegenerally
suppose,andasubjectlikethatoftheconcentrationcampworldwelldesigned,alas,tostimulatesado
masochisticimaginingsofferedthemanexceptionalfieldofaction.Wehaveknownnumerousmentally
damagedpersons,halfswindlersandhalffools,whoexploitedanimaginarydeportationwehaveknown
othersofthemauthenticdeporteeswhosesickmindsstrovetogoevenbeyondthemonstrosities
thattheyhadseenorthatpeoplesaidhadhappenedtothem.Therehavebeenpublisherstoprintsome
oftheirimaginings,andmoreorlessofficialcompilationstousethem,butpublishersandcompilersare
absolutelyinexcusable,sincethemostelementaryinquirywouldhavebeenenoughtorevealthe
imposture.

Tillionlackedthecouragetogiveexamplesandnames.Butthatisusuallythecase.Peopleagreethatthere
arefalsegaschambersthattouristsandpilgrimsareencouragedtovisit,buttheydonottelluswhere.They
agreethattherearefalse"eyewitnesses,"butingeneraltheynameonlyMartinGray,thewellknown
swindler,atwhoserequestMaxGallo,withfullknowledgeofwhathewasdoing,fabricatedthebestseller
ForThoseILoved.

JeanFranoisSteinerissometimesnamedaswell.HisbestsellingnovelTreblinka(1966)waspresentedas
aworkofwhichtheaccuracyofeverydetailwasguaranteedbyoralorwrittentestimony.Inrealityitwasa
fabricationattributable,atleastinpart,tothenovelistGillesPerrault.(note10)MarekHalter,forhispart,
publishedhisLaMmoired'Abrahamin1983asheoftendoesonradio,hetalkedthereabouthis
experiencesintheWarsawghetto.However,ifwearetobelieveanarticlebyNicolasBeauthatisquite
favorabletoHalter,(note11)littleMarek,aboutthreeyearsold,andhismotherleftWarsawnotin1941but
inOctoberof1939,beforetheestablishmentoftheghettotherebytheGermans.Halter'sbookissupposed
tohavebeenactuallywrittenbyaghostwriter,JeanNolGurgan.

FilipMlleristheauthorofEyewitnessAuschwitz:ThreeYearsintheGasChambers ,(note12)whichwon
the1980prizeoftheInternationalLeagueagainstRacismandAntiSemitism(LICRA).Thisnauseousbest
sellerisactuallytheworkofaGermanghostwriter,HelmutFreitag,whodidnothesitatetoengagein
plagiarism.(note13)ThesourceoftheplagiarismisAuschwitz:ADoctor'sEyewitnessAccount ,another
bestsellermadeupoutofwholeclothandattributedtoMiklosNyiszli.(note14)

Thusawholeseriesofworkspresentedasauthenticdocumentsturnsouttobemerelycompilations
attributabletovariousghostwriters:MaxGallo,GillesPerrault,JeanNolGurgan(?),andHelmutFreitag,
amongothers.

WewouldliketoknowwhatGermaineTillionthinksaboutElieWieseltoday.Withhimthelieiscertainlynot
gratuitous.Wieselclaimstobefullofloveforhumanity.However,hedoesnotrefrainfromanappealto
hatred.Inhisopinion:(note15)

EveryJew,somewhereinhisbeing,shouldsetapartazoneofhatehealthy,virilehateforwhatthe
GermanpersonifiesandforwhatpersistsintheGerman.Todootherwisewouldbeabetrayalofthe
dead.

Atthebeginningof1986,83deputiesoftheGermanBundestagtooktheinitiativeofproposingWieselfor
theNobelPeacePrize.Thiswouldbe,theysaid,"agreatencouragementtoallwhoareactiveinthe
processofreconciliation."(note16)Thatiswhatmightbecalled"goingfromNationalSocialismtonational
masochism."

JimmyCarterneededahistoriantopresideoverthePresident'sCommissionontheHolocaust.AsDr.Arthur
Butzsaidsowell,hechosenotahistorianbuta"histrion":ElieWiesel.EventhenewspaperLeMonde,in
thearticlementionedabove,wasobligedtorefertothehistrionictraitthatcertainpersonsdeploreinWiesel:

Naturally,evenamongthosewhoapproveofthestruggleofthisAmericanJewishwriter,whowas
discoveredbytheCatholicFranoisMauriac,somereproachhimforhavingtoomuchofatendencyto
changetheJewishsadnessinto"morbidity"ortobecomethehighpriestofa"plannedmanagementof
theHolocaust."

AsJewishwriterLeonA.Jickhaswritten:"Thedevastatingbarb,'ThereisnobusinesslikeSHOAH
business'is,sadtosay,arecognizabletruth."(note17)

ElieWieselissuesalarmedandinflammatoryappealsagainstRevisionistauthors.Hesensesthatthingsare
gettingoutofhand.Itisgoingtobecomemoreandmoredifficultforhimtomaintainthemadbeliefthatthe
Jewswereexterminatedorweresubjectedtoapolicyofextermination,especiallyinsocalledgas
chambers.SergeKlarsfeldhasadmittedthatrealproofsoftheexistenceofthegaschambershavestillnot
yetbeenpublished.Hepromisesproofs.(note18)

Onthescholarlyplane,thegaschambermythisfinished.Totellthetruth,thatmythbreatheditslastbreath
severalyearsagoattheSorbonnecolloquiuminParis(June29July2,1982),atwhichRaymondAronand
FranoisFuretpresided.Whatremainsistomakethisnewsknowntothegeneralpublic.However,forElie
Wieselitisofthehighestimportancetoconcealthatnews.Thusallthefussinthemedia,whichisgoingto
increase:themorethejournaliststalk,themorethehistorianskeepquiet.

Buttherearehistorianswhodaretoraisetheirvoicesagainsttheliesandthehatred.Thatisthecasewith
MicheldeBoard,wartimememberoftheResistance,deporteetoMauthausen,memberoftheCommittee
fortheHistoryoftheSecondWorldWarfrom1945to1981,andamemberoftheInstitutdeFrance.Ina
poignantinterviewin1986,hecourageouslyacknowledgedthatin1954hehadvouchedfortheexistenceof
agaschamberatMauthausenwhere,itfinallyturnsout,thereneverwasone.(note19)

TherespectowedtothesufferingsofallthevictimsoftheSecondWorldWar,and,inparticular,tothe
sufferingsofthedeportees,demandsonthepartofhistoriansareturntotheprovenandtimehonored
methodsofhistoricalcriticism.

ElieWieselpassesforoneofthemostcelebratedeyewitnessestotheallegedHolocaust.Yetinhis
supposedlyautobiographicalbookNight,hemakesnomentionofgaschambers.Heclaimsinsteadtohave
witnessedJewsbeingburnedalive,astorynowdismissedbyallhistorians.Wieselgivescredencetothe
mostabsurdstoriesofother"eyewitnesses."Hespreadsfantastictalesof10,000personssenttotheir
deathseachdayinBuchenwald.

WhenElieWieselandhisfather,asAuschwitzprisoners,hadthechoiceofeitherleavingwiththeirretreating
German"executioners,"orremainingbehindinthecamptoawaittheSoviet"liberators,"thetwodecidedto
leavewiththeirGermancaptors.

Itistime,inthenameoftruthandoutofrespectforthegenuinesufferingsofthevictimsoftheSecond
WorldWar,thathistoriansreturntotheprovenmethodsofhistoricalcriticism,andthatthetestimonyofthe
Holocaust"eyewitnesses"besubjectedtorigorousscrutinyratherthanunquestioningacceptance.
