Pre-internship Field Experiences

Fall 2016-Present Haslett Middle School (4 hours/week)
This placement included observation and working with small groups of students in an 8th grade
US History class. So far, I have co-taught a lesson on the XYZ Affair during John Adams
Presidency. I have learned strategies for facilitating discussion and engagement in small groups,
different teaching strategies such as Socratic Seminars and how to create effective assessments
as well as unit lesson plans.
Spring 2016 Waverly Middle School (2 hours/week)
This placement included 2 hours a week of observation, tutoring 2 students who were selected by
my mentor teacher, and working with all students in an 8th grade US History class. I taught a 20
minute lesson on the Battle of Gettysburg and the Gettysburg Address. I learned literacy
strategies that students could use in order to improve their reading, writing, and comprehension
skills as well as strategies for facilitating discussion in both small and large groups.
Spring 2014 Everett High School (2 hours/week)
This placement included 2 hours a week of mainly observation as well as working with small
groups of students in a 10th grade US History class. I learned what teaching consisted of and if
this was a career I was truly interested in.
Other Teaching-related Experiences
2016 Science Olympiad Volunteer Instructor
At Haslett Middle School, the site of my placement, I volunteered to help with the Science
Olympiad team. I worked with students twice per week to help them work on their
knowledge-based events as well as their skill-based events.
2010 Volunteer Mentor Hockey Instructor Cheboygan, MI
I volunteered during the 2010-2011 hockey season to help mentor youth hockey players on the
different skills of the game such as skating, passing, and shooting.
Other Work Experience
2013-2016 Arnold Transit Company
I was a lead deckhand at Arnold Transit Company, which meant that I held the responsibility of
training my fellow coworkers. Furthermore, we transported individuals from all across the world
so I learned a great deal about diversity and conversing with people from many different places.
Finally, I was able to gain a large amount of knowledge about the history of Mackinac Island as
well as the entire Straits of Mackinac area.

Personal Interests
My interests include playing hockey and baseball, being outdoors, and reading literature about historical events,
particularly World War II. I played football, hockey, and baseball at Cheboygan Area High School, was elected captain of
the football team and the assistant captain of the hockey team during my senior year, as well as being named an All-State
Academic Athlete in 2011 and 2012. I hope to eventually coach either hockey or baseball at the high school level.
