There has been substantial strengthening of the US Dollar exchange rates in the past five
years as the above figures show. We can also say that within the past 5 years, the continuous
strengthening of the US Dollar has acted as a crucial element in international visitor expenditure
as well as cross-border flows. All the major economies currencies have shown significant
weakening against the United States Dollar in the past six years.
Tourism and Travel destinations in the Eurozone have made the Euro undergo significant
exchange rates dynamics in the past six years. This can be attributed to differing rates of inflation
and varying visitor profiles of origin. Changes in major world interest rates, macroeconomic
balances, divergent economic growth, and commodity prices have continued impacting largely
There are several other reasons that have influenced the weakening of other major
currencies against the US dollar, for instance, Brexit in the case of the GBP. The following are
the main reasons for the strengthening of the USD against other currencies: First is the booming
of oil production in the United States. Secondly, diverging monetary policies with other great
economies of the world. Last but not least, end of quantitative expectation and easing of interest
rates which resulted in increased inflows in the short run and larger outflows from the rest of the
major economies.
