31st Rio Olympics Kick started with opening ceremony where Acting President of Brazil Michel
Temer opened the games in the Maracana Stadium on 5 August 2016. With this the Brazilian city
Rio De Janeiro became the first South American city to host the Summer Olympics.
The Rio Summer Olympic Games 2016 presided under the IOC presidency of Thomas Bach.
This Olympics featured amid so many crisis and one of that is European migrant crisis to
make the level playing field for the Refugees the International Olympic Committee allowed
athletes to compete as Independent Olympians under the Olympic Flag.

The first time Participants in the Olympics Games: Kosovo and South Sudan and First
gold medal was won by - Ginny Thrasher of USA - 10-meter air rifle event.

Sakshi Malik:
Malik was born and brought up in Rohtak, Haryana, the 23-year-oldwrestler is a silver medalist at
the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games and bronze winner at the 2014 in the on Asian Games.
Sakshi Malik who won Indias first medal at the Rio Olympics, was announced as the
countrys flag-bearer at the closing ceremony.
Freestyle Wrestler Sakshi Malik wins India's first medal of Rio Olympics; Bags bronze in
58 kg weight class;
i.Haryana based woman wrestler Sakshi Malik has landed with Indias first medal by
clinching the bronze in the 58kg category at the 2016 Summer Olympics.
ii.Malik clinched Bronze in Womens Freestyle Wrestling by losing the Quarterfinal to
eventual finalist Koblova Zholobowa and produced a stagy come-from-behind 8-5 win over
Kyrgysztan's Aisuluu Tynybekova in the bronze medal play-off.
iii.She scripted history by becoming the first woman wrestler from India to bag an
Olympic medal and only fourth female athlete from the country to climb to the podium at
the biggest sporting event in the world.
iv.Overall, Sakshi has won Indias fifth wrestling medal in the Olympic Games. It is Indias
25th medal in Olympic Games. She was coached by Kuldeep Singh.

The Haryana government announced a reward of Rs. 2.50 crore to wrestler Sakshi
Malik for the winning feat. Besides, she will also be given a government job for her historic
feat.
The wrestler Malik will be rewarded with a cash award of Rs 60 lakh by her employers
Indian Railways for her bronze winning feat.Sakshi Malik is currently a senior clerk with
Northern Railways. She will be promoted to the rank of a gazetted officer.
To Honor the feat of Malik Uttar Pradesh government announced to honour Indian wrestler
Sakshi Malik with the prestigious Rani LaxmiBai Award to signify bravery and outstanding
achievement of women.The award carries a cash prize of Rs 3 lakh.
Over all Sakshi Malik to get Rs. 5.16 Crore cash rewards as on date

In the final match Karmakar narrowly missed out in the bronze medal, finishing 4th in the
finals of the event with a score of 15.066 at Gymnastics Center, Rio de Janeiro where
Simone Biles won Gold.
Produnova vault:
It was her Produnova vault called the 'Vault of Death' earned her a place in the finals.
It is consisting of a front handspring onto the vaulting horse and two front somersaults off.

The vault currently has a 7.0 D-score, and is the hardest vault performed in women's
gymnastics.
She is only the fifth woman in gymnastics history to land the Produnova vault. She was
coached by Bishweshwar Nandi.
Japan wins 1st Olympic game since 2004, edging Belarus 77-73
Japan went ahead to stay in a 77-73 victory over Belarus in the women's basketball game
against Belarus at the Youth Center at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
This is the first time victory in the game in Olympics since 2004. The Asian country didn't
qualify for the games in 2008 or 2012.
She was 98 hundredths quicker than the Canadian Penny Oleksiak who won the silver
medal with a time of 56.46 seconds setting aside American Dana Vollmer who settled for
bronze medal.

Adam Peaty wins first Olympic gold and breaks world record
Great Brutains competitive swimmer Adam Peaty has brought first gold medal after winning the
100-metre breaststroke contest in the Rio Olympics.
Peaty clocked 57.13 seconds to reach the world Record time.He also the first British man to
win an Olympic swimming gold medal since Adrian Moorhouse, bagged the title in Seoul in
1988.
In the High octane contest Cameron van der Burgh of South Africa took silver, while Cody
Miller won bronze for the USA.
Swimmer Katie Ledecky sets world record to win gold in 400m freestyle
Americas Katie Ledecky secured her fourth gold medal in the women's 800m freestyle at the Rio
Games. Howevevr Great Britains Jazz Carlin won Olympic silver in the contest.
Ledecky had taken two seconds off her own world record to win in 8 minutes 4.79
seconds clocking 12 seconds ahead of the rest.
Ledecky is a five-time Olympic gold medalist, and nine-time world champion. She also
holds the record holder in the women's 400-, 800-, and 1,500-meter freestyle.
Judo: Silva wins first gold for host country Brazil left right 3/3leftright
Brazil's Rafaela Silva bagged gold medal of the women's 57-kgjudo competition at the 2016
Summer Olympics in Rio Olympics. With this she won the first gold for host country Brazil.
She clinched the podium by defeating Mongolian Sumiya Dorjsuren in the final. While
Portugal's Telma Monteiro and Japan's Kaori Matsumoto won bronze.
Last time in London Olympics-2012 when she was disqualified in the early rounds for a rule
violation.

First swimmer to win four consecutive golds in same event: Michael Phelps
The United States Swimmer Phelps has won the 200 meters individual medley,with the medal his
tally goes to 22nd gold medal of his career and also become the first swimmer to win the same
event at four consecutive Games.
Phelps has now won two individual and two relay golds at his fifth Olympics, two years
after coming out of retirement. His medal haul has now risen to 26, including two silvers
and two bronzes. While 13 goldsbegged by this man in the individual races, the rest in
relays.
Kazakhstan's Nijat Rahimov wins men's 77kg weightlifting gold at Rio Olympics
Kazakhstan's weightlifter Nijat Rahimov set a world record to win Olympic men's -77kg
weightlifting gold in Rio. He lifted with a clean and jerktotal of 379kg in the contest.
Nijats final lift of 379kg, breaking the 15-year-old clean and jerk record of 210kg.
China's Lyu Xiaojun, who set a world record of 177kg in the snatch, also lifted a total of
379kg but took silver because he is heavier than Rahimov.
India staged 117-strong contingent, (This is the Highest in history)but brought only a silver
and a bronze, and Dipa Karmakar was outstanding in gymnastics and stood at the 67th place in
the medal tally.India took part in 15 sports.
The Medal Tally topped by US for the record fifth time in the past six Summer
Olympics, winning 46 gold medals and 121 medals followed by the Great Britain who
finished with 67 medals and the China finished 70 medals which include 26 Golds.
Indian Olympic Committee President Narayana Ramachandran has received Olympic
Order which is the highest award of the Olympic Movement for particularly distinguished
contributions to it.

In the Mixed Doubles Events Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna lost the bronze medal
playoff to Radek Stepanek and Lucie Hradecka of Czech Republic.
SHOOTING:
Men: Indian Flag bearer Abhinav Bindra finished 4th in the finals, while GaganNarang failed
to qualify in the 10m Air Rifle event.
Men: Jitu Rai finished eighth in the finals, while Gurpreet Singh failed to qualify for the
finals in the 10m Air Pistol event.
ATHLETICS:
Womens 3000m steeplechase: Lalita Babar finished 10th in finals. But Sudha Singh failed to
qualify for the finals.
HOCKEY:
India men lost to Belgium in the quarterfinals. However their counterpart failed to qualify for the
quarterfinals after drawing one and losing four of their league games.
GOLF:
Notably in the Women category Aditi Ashok finished 41st.
WEIGHTLIFTING:
Sathish Sivalingam finished 11th in mens 77kg.
