INTRODUCTORY.
THE ALPHABET.
The Hebrew is read from right to left,. and the
alphabet consists of twenty-two letters, all consonants.
Five of these letters, when at the end of a word, take
a different form and are called finals.

rhere is another mark ( ) sh'va, placed under
a letter withont having a full sound, as the e in b1l0U1.
;fhere are three compound vowels: (_:) Chataph
Patach, which has the sound of a, (T: ) Chataph Kam-
etz which has the sound of 0: and ( .) Chataph Segol
which has the sound of e. These vowels are sometimes
placed under the letters V n n N, instead of a simple
sh'va, in order to strengthen their pronunciation. Pt..
tach under n ii at the enu of a word, is pronounced
before its consonant: as

ACCENT.
The accent is either on the last syllable of a
word and is called V'J7p, or on the penult and is then
called ""'f?P Most of the words are VJ~~ The accent
on the penult is indicated by a vertical stroke below
the syllable called metMg; every word 'without such
