Whilemostpeopleuseherpesasthenameofanindividualvirusitsactuallyusedforanentirestrain
whichcomprisesofmorethan80differentviruses.Fortunately,only10%ofthemattackhumans.
Themostcommonistheherpessimplexvirus1(HSV1)whichonlyaffectsthemouthandlips.Common
signsareblistersaroundthemouth,oftencalledfeverblistersorcoldsores.
Therearerarecasesinwhichblistersalsoappearinthegenitalregion.Thisistriggeredbycontactwith
aninfectedpersonduringsexualactivities.
Type1herpesusuallyspreadsfromskintoskincontactwithaninfectedperson.Youcanalsocatchitif
yousharehouseholdobjectsuchasrazors,towelsoreatingutensilsiftheotherpersonusingithasa
activelesion.
Herpessimplexvirus2(HSV2)affectsmostlythegenitalregionalthoughtherearecasesinwhichsores
appearabovethewaist.Thevirusisusuallytransmittedthroughsexualcontact.Itdoesnotsurvive
outsidethebodymorethanacoupleofminutes.Theviruscansurvivewithinadropofurine,whichis
whyyoushouldsanitizeatoiletseatpriortouse.

Type5herpesisalsoknownasthecytomegalovirus(fromtheGreekwordscyto=cellandmega=large).
Asallotherherpesvirusesithastheabilitytohideinsidethehumanbodyforlongperiodsandcausea
breakoutmonthsorevenyearsaftertheinitialinfection.
Aslongasyourimmunesystemishealthytheherpesvirusdoesnotattackthebody.Withpeoplewho
sufferfromacompromisedimmunesystem(suchasHIV/AIDS),itseffectscanrangefromdiarrheaand
infectionsofthestomach/intestines.Additionalsymptomsincludeseverevisionproblems,blindness
andevendeath
Thevirusistransmittedthroughbloodtransfusions,organtransplantsorsexualcontact.
Type6herpesisarareformofherpeswhichcausesskinrashesandhighfever.Itsvictimsareusually
infantsbutithasalsobeenfoundinpatientswithneuroinflammatorydiseasessuchasmultiple
sclerosis.
Itisestimatedthatupto20%ofinfantemergencyroomvisitsforfeverintheUSarecausedbythe
herpesvirus.
Type7hasbeendiscoveredquiterecentlyandiscloselyrelatedtotype6herpes.Itcanalsocauseaskin
rashaswellasvomiting,feveranddiarrhea.
Notreatmentforthisspecificstrainhasbeendevisedsimplyduetothefactthatthereisnotanyclinical
benefit.
Type8herpesisveryrareandwasdiscoveredinatumorofanAIDSpatient.Itwasaspecialsortof
tumorcalledKaposisSarcomaandalmostallpeoplewhosufferfromthissortoftumorareAIDSvictims.
Itisconsideredveryhardtotreatanditissuspectedtocausevariousotherformsofcancer.
Itisestimatedthatalmost99%ofadultsinWesterncountriesareinfectedbyatleastoneformof
herpes.
InEuropetherearelargedifferencesinhowprevalentthevirusisinthepopulation.IfwetakeHSV1
infectionasanexampleitisestimatedthat84%ofthepeopleinBulgariaand52%ofthecitizensof
Finlandcarrythevirus.FortheUnitedStatesthisnumberhoversaround58%.
WithHSV2thevirusisagainmostprevalentinBulgariawith24%andleastcommoninEnglandwith
only4%.InNorthernAmericathereisabigdifferencebetweenthenumberofmenandthenumberof
womenwhocarrythevirus.Almosttwiceasmanywomen(20.9%)thanmen(11.5%)carrythevirus.
Therearealsoconsiderableinterracialdifferenceswithpeopleofcolorbeingmorethan3timesaslikely
tobeinfected39.2%comparedto12.3%.
Ifyousufferfromacoldsoreonceyourriskofitreturningliesbetween2040%.WithHSV2theriskis
morethantwiceashigh,between6090%.
ThefollowinggraphicfromtheCenterofDiseaseControlandPreventionshowshowyourriskof
catchingtype2herpesincreaseswiththenumberofsexpartners.
Themostcommonwayinwhichpeoplecatchherpesisbyhavingsexwithsomeonewhosalready
infected.Itshouldbenotedthatyoucanonlygetinfectedbythispersonifheorshecurrentlysuffers
fromanoutbreak.
Mostpeoplethatexperienceanoutbreaksufferfromsoreslocatedinthegenitalareawhichisaclear
signofthevirus.
Therearerarecasesinwhichthepersonwhichisinfectedhasanoutbreakwithoutanyvisiblesigns.
Thesepeopleoftendontevenknowtheysufferfromthevirusandthusposeaseverethreattoothers
sincetheydonttakethenecessaryprecautionstoprotecttheirpartners.
Theviruscangettransmittednotonlybygenitalcontactbutalsoduringoralsex.
Inextremelyrarecasespeoplegotinfectedbytouchingobjectswhichcarriedthevirussuchasahottub
ortoiletseat.
Herpes Symptoms
Whatmakesitdifficultforpeopletorecognizethattheysufferfromherpesisthefactthatthe
symptomscandifferfrompersontoperson.Thereareevencasesinwhichnooutsidesymptomsare
visiblemakingselfdiagnosisimpossible.
Usuallythefirstsymptomsshowup48hoursorupto2weeksaftertheinfection.Thisinitialoutbreak
lastsabout23weeks.
Thecommongenitalherpesappearsin5distinctstages:

Themostimportantsteptostrengthenyourimmunesystemistoadoptahealthylifestyle.Herearethe
9mostimportantstepswhichwillhelpyoutoachievethis:
1. Stop smoking
Smokingdepressesantibodiesandcellswhichserveatprotectingyourbodyagainstvirusesandother
invaders.Ithasbeenproventhatsmokersgetsickmoreoftenwithrespiratorydiseasesbeingespecially
common.
Chemicalssuchascarbonmonoxideenterthebodythroughthecigarettesmokeandinterferewith

weightinaperiodof24weeks.Thisweightlossresultedinan80%decreaseofTcellswhichplaya
centralroleincellmediatedimmunity.
Ifyouarecurrentlyoverweightthisstudysuggeststhatthenegativeeffectsthisweightcausescaneasily

todisease.The153participantsofthestudywereinfectedwiththerhinoviruswhichisknowntocause
acold.Thentheyweresplitupintodifferentgroupswitheachgroupsleepingforadifferentlengthof
time.Theresult:participantsthatsleptlessthansevenhourswere300%morelikelytocatchacold
fromthevirusthanthosewhosleptfor89hours.
Themoredeepsleepyourgetthemoreyourimmunesystemgetsstimulatedandenergized.The
NationalInstituteofHealthrecommendssleepingbetween7to8hourseachnight.Pleasenotethatthis
isanaverageandthereareexceptions.Somepeoplecopefinewithjust5hoursofsleepwhileothers
neednolessthan10.
Thebestwaytoassurethatyourgetsufficientsleepistoavoidtobacco,caffeine,decongestantsand
