Title Configure a lattice boom track crawler crane, and lift and place
regular loads

Purpose People credited with this unit standard are able to: prepare for
moving a track crawler crane; configure and position a track
crawler crane, and identify regulatory permits; lift and place
loads with a track crawler crane, travel the crane, and complete
documentation; demobilise the track crawler crane for removal
off-site, and complete documentation; and carry out daily and
weekly safety and maintenance checks of the track crawler
crane.

Explanatory notes

1 Definitions
The definition of a crane is as given in the Health and Safety in Employment
(Pressure Equipment, Cranes, and Passenger Ropeways) Regulations 1999.
A regular load has one or more of the following characteristics uniform weight
distribution, concentric loading, regular proportions, known lifting points, repetitively
lifted.

2 Assessment
Assessment must be carried out on a track crawler crane with a lattice boom with a
30 tonne minimum capacity.

3 All tasks are to be carried out in accordance with the equipment manufacturers
requirements and company standards and procedures based on industry
requirements in:
a company quality management systems;
b health and safety requirements and guidelines consistent with the Health and
Safety in Employment Act 1992 (HSE Act);
c equipment manufacturers operating instructions;
d government and local government legislation, regulations, and bylaws;

5 Range
Must include the following types of track driven gear on cranes fully hydraulically
operated or hydraulically powered, and manual or air clutch operated.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Prepare for moving a track crawler crane with a lattice boom.

Evidence requirements

1.1 Personnel involved and/or affected by the operation are notified in accordance
with company procedures.

1.2 Hazards and potential hazards when moving are identified and dealt with in
accordance with company risk assessment procedures and legislative
requirements.

Range vehicles, equipment, ground condition, underground services,

overhead power lines, overhead service lines, trees, buildings,
structures, unauthorised people.

1.3 Resources required to assist with the project are arranged and/or confirmed,
and relevant personnel notified in accordance with company procedures and job
specifications.

Range type and capacity of crane; types and capacities of lifting

equipment; type of vehicle used for transport; miscellaneous
resources including operators, assemblers, dogmen, riggers.

1.4 Site is prepared to allow assembly and appropriate positioning in accordance

with crane and equipment manufacturers requirements and company
procedures.

Range access, site plan, levelling, obstructions, effective rig radius.

Outcome 2

Configure and position a track crawler crane with a lattice boom, and identify regulatory
permits.

2.1 Crane is configured to lift and place loads in accordance with crane
manufacturers requirements and company procedures.

Range may include but is not limited to automatic safe load indicator,
computerised information, reeving, blocks, boom, boom angle,
radius, counterweight, height.

2.2 Rigging and lifting equipment is checked to ensure it is fit for purpose in
accordance with equipment manufacturers requirements for the load to be lifted
and company procedures.

2.3 Crane is positioned to lift optimally and place loads in accordance with crane
manufacturers requirements and company procedures.

Range positioning within convenient reach of load, on sound solid

ground, on clear slewing area with load.

2.4 Legislative requirements on site are identified in accordance with company

procedures.

Range may include but is not limited to road controlling authorities,

power companies, telecommunications companies, rail
companies.

Outcome 3

Lift and place regular loads with the track crawler crane with a lattice boom, travel the
crane, and complete documentation.

Evidence requirements

3.1 Personnel assisting with the lift are confirmed as being in their respective
positions ready to conduct their tasks in accordance with company procedures.

Range operator, dogmen, foreman, supervisor.

3.2 Load is confirmed as correctly attached, crane takes the weight, and loads are
lifted and placed in accordance with crane manufacturers requirements and
company procedures.

Range check automatic safe load indicator, stabilisers, stability, range

chart;
slewing crane with suspended load load swing, obstructions,
dogmen, overhead hazards.

3.3 The crane is travelled in accordance with crane manufacturers

recommendations.

3.4 Documentation is completed in accordance with company procedures.

Range may include but is not limited to crane hire docket, logs, records,
job sheets, crane equipment inventories, maintenance requests.

Outcome 4

Demobilise a track crawler crane with a lattice boom for removal off-site, and complete
documentation.

Evidence requirements

4.1 Crane is dismantled and travel points are secured in accordance with crane
manufacturers requirements and company procedures.

Range may include counterweight, A-frame, boom, tracks.

4.2 Lifting and other equipment used in conjunction with the lift is stored in
accordance with company procedures.

4.3 Documentation is completed in accordance with company procedures.

Range may include but is not limited to logs, records, job sheets, crane
equipment inventories, maintenance requests, plant transfer
sheet.

Outcome 5

Carry out daily and weekly safety and maintenance checks of a track crawler crane with a
lattice boom.

Evidence requirements

5.1 Daily safety and maintenance checks of the track crawler crane are carried out
in accordance with equipment manufacturers requirements and company
procedures.

5.2 Weekly safety and maintenance checks of the track crawler crane are carried
out in accordance with equipment manufacturers requirements and company
procedures.
