    Corrosion Allowance in Deaerator Design

    In pressure vessel design, metal thickness that is provided beyond that required for internal or
    external pressure design is referred to as the corrosion allowance. In the case of deaerators,
    corrosion appears in the form of pits, which may become the source of cracking resulting from
    corrosion fatigue. A minimum corrosion allowance equal to the pit depth is recommended to
    reinforce sections subject to pitting. In deaerator design, a corrosion allowance of 1/8 on
    carbon steel vessels is recommended to account for metal loss.
