HEAD OF CHILDREN AND YOUTH SERVICES

Job Title: Head of Children and Youth Services

Location: UDCh

Reports to: Director of Library Services

Classification: Full-Time Exempt

POSITION SUMMARY
Under the general direction of the Director of Library Services, this employee performs
responsible professional and supervisory work in planning, implementing and managing a
comprehensive program of library services to children. The work involves planning, developing
and coordinating services and programs designed to interest children through the fifth grade.
The work requires the use of professional skill, initiative and independent judgment. It also
involves staff training, development and performance evaluation. This employee also supervises
the Young Adult Librarian.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may
be assigned as needed to meet library needs.

Plans and coordinates the operation of the Children's Library in the Main Library.
Coordinates the activities and programs of the Branch Library's children's programs.
Trains and supervises personnel. Reviews staff performance.
Selects children's materials for acquisition for the Township Libraries. Participates in the
cataloging process. Evaluates the collection.
Provides reader's advisory and reference.
Maintains records and prepares reports.
Interprets library rules and policies.
Maintains public relations to promote library programs, including the writing of news
releases and contact with schools and organizations.
Oversees operations of the circulation desk in the Children's Library. Performs circulation
desk duties.
Attends and participates in professional meetings,
Keeps informed of current trends and developments affecting libraries.

Engages in outreach to schools, daycares and pre-schools and other community
organizations and agencies that serve children and their caregivers
Recruits and supervises volunteers for summer program and as needed throughout the year
Creates or supervises displays to promote reading and programs within the Childrens
Room

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE


Masters Degree in Library Science

SKILLS AND ABILITIES


Knowledge of the professional practices, procedures and techniques of library science;
knowledge of children's books and materials; knowledge of cataloging and classification
of materials; knowledge of library rules and regulations; knowledge of and ability to use
reference tools.
Skill in planning and supervising the work of others.
Ability to instruct and supervise others; ability to maintain discipline; ability to maintain
effective working relations with others; ability to interpret library resources and services
to the public and to the general community.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
PA State Child Abuse History and Criminal Record clearances as required by PA state law
upon employment

lifting techniques required. May include lifting up to 25 pounds for books and bags/boxes of
materials on occasion.
