F Well, lots this week. Theres so much to see and do.
One of the most exciting things is the yearly Food
Festival. You can go to various cafs where they teach
you how to cook any of the dishes from their special
menus. Watch them do it in front of you and then eat it
straight away. Other restaurants are offering
international menus, so if youre a food lover
Now, Morelands council is proud to open their newest
sports centre on Tuesday. Theyve replaced the old
Madison tennis grounds with new basketball courts,
both indoor and out. Plus, there are also future plans to
expand the complex and build a swimming pool and
gym in the next year.
And at Morelands Theatre theres a new musical. This
follows on from the success of the theatres Christmas
play. It seems like serious Shakespeare has gone out of
fashion, and its laughter and song for the next two
months.
Then, for music lovers, the usual Jazz Night is on at
Palmers Bar every Thursday. This is temporary. Its had
to move from Golden Bridge Caf because the caf was
too small. The Jazz Night is so popular. It should
hopefully finally move to its new location, the New
Moon Pub, by the end of the month and theyll be
space for everyone.
And for all those culture lovers, what about joining the
local book club? This week they are discussing the old
classic Pride and Prejudice in the library on Saturday
morning at ten. They arent going to meet on Thursday
morning anymore because the library is too busy, and
although there have been requests for Sundays, the
librarys usually closed so its impossible to organise it.
So then, hurry up and finish reading and get on down...
And finally, this weekend you can get outside and make
Morelands a greener place. Remember all the trees in
Russell Park that were damaged in the heavy rains?
Well, now were asking you to help plant some more to

M Well Lucy, one of the popular places at the moment is
South Africa, where you can go on a 3-day safari and

more. If you like animals, then one of the other places

boat. What fun!
Another incredible place is Brazil. Its got exciting cities
and a lot of people go there, usually in March, to see
the colourful carnival and listen to the spectacular
music. And dance, dance, dance.
One of the most interesting countries you can explore is
India. There are so many things to do. You can go
trekking in the mountains, swim in the ocean or just
visit some of the beautiful palaces around the country.
Its fantastic.
Or, if you want something a bit more adventurous, then
Canada is a great place for winter sports. Its got such
incredible mountains and some of the best skiing in the
world. But you need to know how to ski before you try
going out in the snow!
And of course, for those of us who just love a bit of city
life, Hong Kong still remains a favourite. Everyone
knows that, in Asia, its probably the most important city
for business. But did you know that some people only
go for a weekend to eat the amazing food? Hong Kong
offers some of the best dishes on the planet.
Those are just some ideas Lucy. We dont have time to
discuss them all. But I hope all the listeners have had
some ideas for an exciting holiday this year

must say, I think Id be frightened if I saw a lion.
M Ive actually seen them both. I went on a safari in Kenya
a couple of years ago. I loved it.
F Really? Wow, it mustve been great. All those animals.
M Yes, and its not scary at all. Some people have been
hurt by hippos or elephants with babies, but our guide
was very careful and we kept at a safe distance from
the animals.
F Sounds incredible. Well, Ill keep watching my
documentaries and dream about visiting these places
one day

is hoped that this certificate will help them when they
look for a job. More advanced computer courses will be
organised later in the year and computer workshops for
children are available on request.
Local photographer Dean Joseph will be working with
us again this month, showing us how to take the perfect
picture. Hell explain the basics with his cameras and
give advice in the first lesson on which type you need
for the course. Please remember your own camera is
necessary as the library does not provide them.
Were pleased to announce that our Nordic Walking
groups are becoming more and more popular. Although
many of you have suggested walking around the city
centre, we cant do this because of the traffic. So, we
are planning the walks next to the river again and might
consider Thames Park in the future if enough people
are interested. Walks will be at nine oclock on Tuesday
and Thursday morning.
And last, but not least, our special cooking courses are
going to run every Saturday morning for the next 8
weeks. Classes are four-hours long, starting at nine
oclock and finishing at one. All ingredients are
provided, you just have to turn up to class, cook and
then eat your lunch. People of all ages are invited, with
a 10% discount for pensioners.

between 7.30 and 8.45 and lunch is available from
12.00 to 2.30 every day. You can also buy sandwiches
and drinks if youre going out for a school trip. Dinner is

only available from Monday to Friday, from 6.30 to

The TV room is on the ground floor next to the bar. You
can watch TV during the day or watch a film in English,

Jane, the largest ferry of Delma Seaways. If I can have
your attention for a few moments, Id like to give you
some information about our ferry.
Please remember to make a note of where you have
parked your car and in which section of the ship it is in.
The ferry is very large so once we arrive at our
destination please listen carefully for instructions on
how to drive off the ship. In the past, drivers could
come into the sections whenever they wanted. Please
note that this has changed and now drivers are called
to each of the sections in turn. Please follow these
instructions very carefully to avoid delaying the other
cars. Families with young children please note that for
safety reasons children can no longer walk off the ferry
with an adult first but must stay in the car.
There are various seating options on the ferry. All
outside seating areas are open to passengers
throughout the journey, and so are seating areas in
zones A and B. Areas near and in the bars and
restaurants are open only during meal times and
seating areas in family areas must be vacated by the
time the ferry arrives at the destination.
There are a number of options for passengers who wish
to have something to eat. There are 2 bars for light
refreshments including sandwiches. They are situated
on the upper deck. There are also 2 pubs serving
drinks and light lunches, one at the front of the ferry
and one at the back. The 3 restaurants on each of the
decks only serve full meals and need to be booked at
the beginning of the journey.
There is also a swimming pool on board the ferry which
passengers are invited to use. It will open for three
hours from 2 oclock till 5. Children must be
accompanied by an adult. Please note that it is closed
during departure and arrival.
There are a number of facilities for children on the ferry.

There is a play room open to younger children. Parents
must be present while the children are in the play area.
Children can also use the computer games room on
the top deck. Parents are requested to stay with their
children in the games room and make sure that
children do not disturb other passengers. We will also
show a film on the bottom deck in the ferry cinema.
Todays film is Cold Age. Parents do not need to stay as
a number of entertainment officers will be in the room
with the children.
I hope that I have given you all the information that you
need for todays journey, but if you have any other

Ive come today to give you some information on
current job opportunities and hope this information will
give you some ideas for your career
First of all, Im sure there are a few of you whod like to
go into teaching. There are several courses available
but be careful which one you choose. Its possible to do
a 3-month course but this is only an introduction to
teaching and is not a qualification for teaching in high
school. For this you need to do an intensive one-year
course with training. Its also possible to do this same
course part-time over 2 years.
For students who want to go into the field of tourism
there are job opportunities in some of the largest hotels
in the city. Please dont think you can just pop into the
hotel and apply in person. Instead you have to do an
application on-line and fill in the information about your
work experience as its no longer enough to just send a
covering letter and C.V. Ill give the web address to
people interested after.
And what about the financial sector? There are lots of
exciting opportunities in this field. Savings Bank is
looking for staff for a variety of positions in offices
across the country. Its not actually necessary to have a
degree in Maths nor to have studied Economics or
another related subject. The bank will give interviews
and do tests to see if a person could be suitable for jobs
in the company.
Now perhaps there are some of you who would enjoy
a job with a more social focus. The government is
currently encouraging people to enter the nursing
profession. It is offering the usual 2-year training
course in various colleges and hospitals but you dont
have to pay for any of the course or even pay for Part
of it as in previous years. This is really good news.
And in the field of computing there is more good news.

degree in I.T. but experience isnt necessary as they

Theyll start in Fashion Pluss design studios in the U.K.
and eventually move abroad to manage one of the

exciting films to tell you about this week. There are so
many of them I dont know where to begin
How to Get the Girl perhaps? This film is a romantic
comedy starring John Pricewater and Melanie Baldwin.
Its obvious theres a love story involved but this ones
different. To see if John gets the girl or not, go and see
the film and be ready for a big surprise.
And what about Gladiators Return? One of the most
successful films this year, this film has already been on
show for more than two months. Matt Willows fights the
evil Romans and unites the country and always with
a beautiful smile on his face.
Queen Elizabeths Soldiers is being shown across the
city. This film is full of action, noise AND full of colour. It
attacks your senses. Not surprising really that this film
won an Oscar last month for best Costume Design.
Then theres also the historical documentary Making
Britain. This film is based on the best-selling book of
the same name. Its a long film and it lasts for 3 hours
but dont worry about falling asleep as this documentary
really brings the history of the country alive.
And to finish, we have the musical Happy&Lucky!
Newspapers and magazines have written excellent
reviews and youll leave the cinema singing, whether
you want to or not. The music for this film was
performed by the Manhattan Orchestra and is available
on C.D. That way you can carry on singing at home!

F So Lewis. This was a bit of a change. No more cycling
races and instead a long trip around the world
M Yes. A BIG change. When I retired from cycling I
decided I wanted to slow down. So I planned this trip by
bike. I was originally going to do it in 120 days, but I
decided to take it slow and it took me 160, though I did
consider staying in some places a bit longer! But more
than 200 days away from home seemed a bit TOO
much.
F I can imagine Well, which places did you cycle
through, then?
M Well, I started from my house in Oxford and cycled
through Europe. I was expecting to see lots of industrial
areas, you know, with factories everywhere or loads of
really large towns, but actually I was surprised just how
green Europe still is. Lots of flowers everywhere. And
then I went down to Africa.
F Really?
M Um um. Now THAT was exciting. I saw lots and lots of
animals, including so many giraffes, but I didnt get to
see one lion or a tiger - and I really wanted to. But that
doesnt matter because the place is so amazing and it
was brilliant anyway and then I cycled up the east coast
and into the Middle East. Now THAT was hard.
F How come?
M Because the climate is so extreme there. Its BOILING!
You see miles and miles of desert and then, of course,
an incredible blue sea on the coast and still its so hot. I
was surprised because it actually rained a bit when I
was there. Only a few drops, but still
F That mustve been a shock.
M Yes, it so rarely happens. And then Asia. It was
INCREDIBLE. So many people and I must say, quite a
bit of pollution. It was such a change when I landed in
Australia and relaxed on the coast. I went swimming in
waterfalls and then with dolphins in the sea, which was
fantastic. There werent any coloured fish, which I was
disappointed about, but at least I didnt meet any
sharks. I was a bit worried about that.
F And then your last stop was America.
M Yes, the States. Wonderful, as always. I had originally
planned to be there in summer. I mean, I left home at
the beginning of Spring. But it was actually Autumn by
the time I arrived and the colours were amazing. But I
was so tired when I finally finished cycling across the
country...
F Oh my legs are hurting for you! Your trip sounds
amazing. Well Lewis, thank you for coming today

F Good morning Ladies and Gentlemen and welcome to
Annies Culture Tours. My name is Anne and Im your
guide today. If you can just listen carefully Im going to
give you some information on todays tour.
Right, I hope youre all comfortable as it will take about
an hour to reach Belington Castle, depending on the
traffic. The castle is considered one of the most
beautiful in Scotland. It has looked like this since 1305,
but historical records show that a castle was in actual
fact first planned on the site around 1080, and then
building work started much later in 1192. There were
various additions made during the next 100 years until
the castle grew to the size it is today, and a castle that,
incredibly, is still very much in use so many years after.
Well, its not just a tourist site its actually a castle
thats lived in. Its most recent owner is the Duke of
Glenborough, who spends much of the year there. Its
also possible to rent parts of the castle. This first started
with the previous owner, the Lord of Cutham, who used
to rent it when he was away for the summer. This castle
is rich in history and famous people, with even Prince
George staying there once!
Once we have visited the castle, youre in for a surprise.
No tourist restaurants for you today, but instead, a
relaxing picnic next to the lake in the castle grounds.
Well give you lunch bags with drinks, sandwiches and
desserts, and then a coffee. But if anyone feels they
would like something more, there is a cafe next to the
bookshop in the castle.
Then, in the afternoon well take you to see Belington
Cathedral, well-known for its medieval architecture. Its
not that near to the Castle so well have to take the
coach there, but it is close to the university, which you
can also go and see when you finish in the Cathedral.
Theres also one of Britains biggest mosques in town,
which we recommend you see. You can easily walk
there, if youre interested, in the couple of hours free
time that youll have at the end of the tour. The town of
Belington really is a beauty.
Before leaving town, well meet at the Summer Caf
near the river, for tea and coffee. Dont worry, there
wont be any more sandwiches and soft drinks but
there will be some delicious local cakes to try. Meet
there at 4 oclock. Well leave about an hour later and
the journey home at that time of day normally takes
around 50 minutes, so we should be back at Welting
town no later than 6.00.

Well, unfortunately, as much as Id love to give you
some good news, Im afraid I cant. That sun we saw
last week, well, its disappeared. It keeps getting colder
and colder across the country. Spring can wait, as this
winter really doesnt seem to want to end.
And it looks like the north of Scotland will feel the drop
in temperature the most. Dress up warm today as it will
probably only get to around 2 degrees in the afternoon
and theres a strong chance of snow before early
evening. So, if you want to make your last snowman of
the season, thats that right place in the U.K. to be.
Things wont improve much in the south of Scotland,
northern England and Northern Ireland, either. Expect
short snowfalls and wind in the afternoon. So dont put
those winter coats and boots away just yet! Then, things
should improve slightly in the Midlands and Wales. It
wont feel quite as cold there as in the north but it will
continue to be wet and windy, with a few thunderstorms
in the early afternoon. And things probably wont be
much better there tomorrow. When will all this horrible
weather end I hear you say!
Now, to the south of England, expect slightly warmer
temperatures with a maximum of 5 degrees. But, dont
get too excited, its a wet day there, too. Rain all day
with a good chance of fog in the early evening,
especially in coastal areas. Make sure you drive

to organise some money. The local currency is a bit
difficult to get so perhaps we should book it in advance
from the bank.
M Oh its probably easier if we change the money out once
we get there. And well probably get a better exchange
rate.
F Yeah, youre probably right. Well, it looks like weve
