Unit Title: Parallels Between English and Spanish Grammar

Prelude

Performance Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
Explain when to use each tense discussed in the lesson (present progressive, conditional,
commands, imperfect)
Explain which verb endings in Spanish and English correspond with each tense.
Identify what tense a sentence is in when it is written in both English and Spanish.

Rationale:
This lesson engages students in understanding grammatical patterns between English and
Spanish through interacting with the Smartboard technology. This lesson allows students to use
their strong foundations in the English language to build a competency in the Spanish language.
It also provides them with a more thorough understanding of verb tenses, when to use them, and
how similar they are in both Spanish and English. This learning will be supported through the
use of a Smartboard and a Kahoot assessment. By using technology to assist in making
comparisons between the two languages, the lesson can effectively focus on Common CORE and
ISTE standards as well as UDL Guidelines:
Common CORE: World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages: Language
Comparisons
ISTE: 1a) Creativity and Innovation: Apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas,
products, or processes
UDL: 1.1) Provide Multiple Means for Representation: Provide options for perception:
Offer alternatives for visual information
UDL: 1.2) Provide Multiple Means for Representation: Provides Options for Language,
Mathematical Expression, and Symbols: Clarify syntax and structure, Promote
understanding across languages, and illustrate through multiple media
UDL: 1.3) Provide Multiple Means for Representation: Provide Options for
Comprehension: Activate or supply background knowledge, Highlight patterns, critical
features, big ideas, and relationships, and guide information processing, visualization,
and manipulation

Assessment Strategy:
We developed a Kahoot Quiz as a formative assessment in order to evaluate students
understanding of the verb tenses discussed in the lesson. We planned the assessment so that each
verb tense has the same amount of questions. If students are commonly missing the answers to
both questions for one verb tense, this would allow us to make that analysis based on the data
collected from the Kahoot Quiz and we would then be able to address any misconceptions. If
time allows, after each question has been answered by all students, we will ask a student, who
chose the correct answer, to explain to their classmates why that answer is correct.

Accommodations for Exceptional Learners:

We designed the slides of our presentation to be easily seen by a visually impaired student. The
text on each slide is large and the colors were kept to black and white which contrast well and
are easy to distinguish. We would also print out handouts of the slides for visually impaired
students. Also, if there was a student with a hearing impairment, we would use a microphone so
that the student is able to listen clearly to the content. If a student were already familiar with
Spanish then we would give them the opportunity to write example sentences for the rest of the
class. This way these students are being challenged more while still being able to engage with
the class instead of being isolated or assigned more work.

Academic Language:
Grammar, present progressive, imperfect tense, conditional tense, commands

Grouping Strategy:
Students will participate individually during the Smart Notebook Presentation and Kahoot
assessment. For the Fly Swat Activity, students will be paired up into two teams, but will
compete individually for their teams.

Materials:
1. Smartboard
2. Handouts of powerpoint for visually impaired students (if necessary)

Time Core Components and Method Markers

1 min Hook: You may think that there are not many similarities between English and
Spanish, but there are actually more similarities than you may think and may
actually already know some Spanish grammatical structures with the knowledge
you have of English.

1 min Student Aim: Today we will be looking at parallels between English and Spanish
grammar which will allow us to make comparisons between the two languages.
14-16 min Development:
1. Go through Smart Notebook Presentation with students which will include
four different verb tenses (present progressive, conditional, commands,
and imperfect tense). Switch off between slides where in the examples for
each slide Gabrielle will read the English example and Isabel will read the
Spanish example. In the examples, we will highlight the the use of the
verb tense so that students can visualize the pattern. After two verb tenses
have been explained, there will be a short practice where one student will
be asked to come up to the Smartboard and match the English example to
the Spanish example using the same verb tense. Another student will
highlight the endings which indicate the verb tense being used.
2. After going through each verb tense and completing the short practices
activities in between, students will play a fly swatting game in which 8
volunteers will be split into two teams. Two students from opposing teams
will play at a time. Students will be prompted with a question, one
question per verb tense, and the students will have to circle/underline the
correct answer from four choices that are presented to them. The student
that selects the correct answer first will explain why the it is that they
selected that choice.
3. Students will connect to the Kahoot Quiz, which will serve as the
assessment for this lesson. If time allows, after each question, we will ask
a student who selected the correct answer to explain it to their classmates.

1 min Culmination: Today we learned about the uses for present progressive,
conditional, commands, and imperfect tenses, and we looked at these verb tenses
to make comparisons between English and Spanish.
