Time to Tailor!

This short exercise aims to illustrate the challenges of translating sentences

containing tricky terms and give you a chance to practice your new skills.

Read the following text:

We secretly like being yelled at. Cheesy commercials dislodge us from couch-potato
stupors. They get our attention.

Source: New York Times

What do you think cheesy means in this context? (Write it down!)

Search for translations of cheesy in your target language. Use at least a

couple of sources (for example, your language dictionary, ProZ.com,
WordReference.com, etc.). Write down the options.

Choose one of the options from your search results.

Now, look up the option you chose in a monolingual dictionary. Does it

work in the context of the original sentence?

Then, look up the option you chose in a bilingual dictionary. Does it

translate back correctly?

Did you find a good fit? If not, how would you convey the meaning of this
sentence in your target language?
