Personification Lesson Plan

11-7-2016

Objective: Students will learn that personification is the concept of giving animals and objects
human characteristics.
Materials:
Powerpoint with images-provided by Ms. Pollpeter
Anticipatory Set:
Start by reading the book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. Ask students to pay attention to the
characters in the story.
Who were the characters in the story? What did they do? Is it normal for those characters to
do that in real life? No! We dont see letters talking to each other in real life.
Procedure:
We call this personification. Personification is when we give objects and animals human
characteristics.
Can you think of a movie, TV show, or commercial that uses personification?
Show images on projector of the following examples
Toy Story
Cars
M&M commercial
Spongebob Squarepants
Veggie Tales
While students look at each image, ask who the characters are and how this is an example of
personification.
What could I do to personify a flag? I think of a flag flying in the wind. Instead of saying flying,
what other words could I use? (ex. dancing). My new sentence could be: The flag dances in the
wind. The flag doesnt actually dance but it helps paint an image in our heads.
Ask one table pod/student to pick an object in the room. What could we do to give this object
human characteristics?
Work through the example as a class. Do with other objects in classroom if needed.
Now it is your turn to write your own personification story. You will write a short story or poem
about what happens at night time. Maybe it is making objects outside personified (trees, stars,
etc) or maybe it is the objects in your house. What do you think happens when you are asleep?
Give students think time.
We will now look at the rubric so that you have an idea of what guidelines you should follow.
Review rubric and answer any questions.
Closure:
Who can remind me of what personification is? How should you incorporate it into your
writing piece?
Tell students that this will be due on Wednesday.
