flow rates are needed for several hydraulic functions, the

THE ROAD AHEAD

FOR MOBILE MACHINES
Global emissions regulations compliance, efficiency, electrification, digitalization are challenges
ahead for engine-powered equipment and vehicles

BY ROBERTA PRANDI
Editors Note: AVL List, the independent development
specialist focusing on powertrain systems with internal
combustion engines, will host its International Commer-
cial Powertrain Conference in Graz, Austria, May 10-11.
For insights on the current and future challenges faced by
machine and component manufacturers, much of which
will be discussed at the conference, Diesel Progress In-
ternational spoke with Dr. Marko Dekena, AVLs executive
vice president.

DPI: What are the main challenges ahead for mobile

working machinery, both on-highway and off-highway?
Dr. Dekena: Needless to mention of course that it is
compliance with global emission regulations. We are by no
means at the end of this yet. A whole wave of new, more
severe emission regulations are coming up in the future
in the USA, Europe, Japan, China and India. CO2 or fuel
consumption regulations, further NOx emission reductions,
particle number limitations and in-use compliance are the
main topics for future on-highway and nonroad regulations.
It will no longer be sufficient to improve efficiencies of
the engine and/or the transmission. Instead, the overall ef-
ficiency of the complete vehicle or machine whatever it
is must be the focus of our development work. A deep
and broad understanding of machine and vehicle usage is
needed with all relevant duty cycles. This information pro-
vides the mandatory input parameters needed to develop
new vehicles and machines that will comply with future reg-
ulations. This in turn leads to a demand for new skills and According to Dr. Marko Dekena, executive vice presi-

in an improved manufacturing effec-

Indeed, all necessary wirings are

Mouni said. There is no more need
to open the generator terminal box to
wire the cables or set the voltage level.
Electrical risks are dramatically reduced
and all information is available on the

The project also fits in our broader vi-

we see components in the gen-set

does just that by packing together all
the controls in a single device.
As an alternator manufacturer, we

Khaled Al Nablsee, chairman at

that has been expanding steadily.
The U.A.E. is a big market for gen-

huge number of upcoming real estate
projects where power generation is
needed during the entire period of
construction, Al Nablsee said. Even
after the completion of the project,
generator sets are required to power
lifts and elevators, and other impor-
tant areas in the buildings.
Al Nablsee added that industries
across the country also require power
generators to keep their machines
running in case of emergencies or
outages or if an extra power load is
needed for increased production.
We have full confidence in the qual-

Al Nablsee said. We see the product
is the most innovative and relevant
solution for generator set manufactur-

the customer needs. It is convenient
to install and use because of its built-
in interface and dedicated software.
ControlReg also leads to decisive
savings on the assembly line.
We feel proud to be part of Leroy-

renowned big companies, including
DUBAI STAND Caterpillar, are using their alternators

GAS ENGINES

1 MW OF
PLUG-AND-PLAY POWER
Liebherrs new 20-cylinder G9620 gas engine targets range of power
generation, cogeneration applications

L
iebherr Components a division of the Liebherr
Group is launching a new 20-cylinder gaseous-
fuel engine that follows the companys strategy for
the development of fully equipped gas engines.
Officially unveiled late last year at EnergyDecentral in
Hanover, Germany, the Liebherr G9620 gas engine offers a
power output in excess of 1 MW from a 48.7 L displacement
with 44% mechanical efficiency, the company said.
The new gas engine by Liebherr will be available in two
basic versions a high efficiency and high response ver-
sion, said Martial Suchet, head of Sales Gas Engines, at
Liebherr. With them, Liebherr will cover the most applica-
tions on a wide spectrum of different gases for example
gases with different energy values as well as gases with
different methane numbers. Applications both in net parallel
work and island mode, as well as in 50 or 60 Hz applica-
tions are further planned for development.
This flexibility is possible thanks to only a few adjust-
ments and some geometric aspects, but mainly thanks to
our onboard electronics. The electronic control units are
steering all essential engine functions, such as knocking
control, ignition control, power control, lambda control,
safety controls.
The company said the G9620 gas engine would include
integrated air filters, on-engine Liebherr engine control
units (ECUs) with calibrated data sets and a new water-
cooling concept.
Like its predecessors, the new engine was designed for With a 48.7 L displacement, the new Liebherr G9620 gas

CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE DRIVE
WITH HIGH EFFICIENCY
Heavy loads, continuously adjustable speed and easy maneuverability these are the demands that
todays off-highway transmissions need to meet. The fully powersplit CVT (Continuously Variable
Transmission) technology of the cPOWER combines these characteristics with improved fuel consump-
tion of up to 25 percent. The cPOWER operates at low engine speeds, thus increasing efficiency and
driver comfort even more. The application of an elaborate hydraulic transmission-control unit and a
transmission-integrated on-board electronic unit optimally completes driving functions. www.zf.com
