1. (a) The diagram shows light hitting a glass block and being reflected.
Some of the wavefronts are also shown.

glass

Draw the normal, the light ray and at least three wavefronts in the glass.
[3 marks]

(b) Optical fibres are made of an internal glass core and an external glass coating, as shown
below. Light is moving through an optical fibre by total internal reflection.

glass core glass coating

(i) Continue the ray to show how it moves through the optical fibre.
[1 mark]

(ii) Complete the sentences below.

[2 marks]

The density of the glass coating is than the density of the glass core.

The angle of incidence is

Fig. 1

(a) (i) Draw a second ray in Fig. 1 that determines the position of the image.
[1 mark]

(ii) Draw the necessary rays in Fig. 2 below to determine the position of the image.

SEMESTER 2 TEST 1

(b) The figure below shows in detail how light passes into a glass lens, but the angles shown are
exaggerated. Converging lenses were used in telescopes to focus light of distant stars and
obtain images of stars.

red ray
white ray from a star
blue ray

(i) The following statement appears in a text: The higher the frequency the slower the
speed of electromagnetic waves in glass.
Use the figure above to explain whether you agree or not with this statement.
[3 marks]

(ii) Explain why, when using thick converging lenses, the image obtained on a screen from
distant stars is blur.

3. Colour filters are often used to change the perception that we have.
A red and a green colour filter are placed in front of a source of white light.
The two filters overlap over a small region, as shown below.

B

State and explain what colour the observer will see in each of the regions A, B and C based on
how filters operate.

4. (a) The figure below shows the absorption of electromagnetic waves by the atmosphere.
Use the figure to answer the questions (i) and (ii) that follow.

(i) An astronauts suit has a coating to reflect UV radiation. Explain the dangers from UV
radiation and explain why such measures are not necessary on Earth.
[3 marks]

UV reflecting
coating

(ii) The figures below show the Arecibo telescope in Puerto Rico and the Spitzer Infrared
Space Telescope. Suggest what waves the Arecibo can detect on Earth and why the
Spitzer has to operate in space.
[3 marks]

SEMESTER 2 TEST 1

(b) The figure below shows water heating solar panels used excessively in Cyprus.
In its basic structure it consists of copper water pipes (copper being one of the best heat
conductors) sealed in a dark coloured container.

Explain the choice of the container used.

Explain also why the temperature will not keep increasing on a hot summer day.

p. 6

3. A = red [1 mark]
B = black [1 mark]
C = green [1 mark]
& any three from [3 marks]
Filters absorb all colours
Filters will transmit only one / their own colour
Red filter will allow only red through (the rest absorbed)
Green will allow only green through (the rest absorbed)
In B the green filter will transmit green which will be absorbed by the red filter

p. 7 & 8

4. (a) (i) UV cause DNA mutation & skin cancer / melanomata [1 mark]
100% UV absorbed by atmosphere [1 mark]
=> no UV reaches the surface (or similar) [1 mark]

(ii) Any three from [3 marks]

Arecibo = radio waves
No radio absorbed by atmosphere / All radio reach the Earth
Spitzer: IR absorbed by atmosphere / Little reach the Earth
Spitzer has to be above atmosphere (or similar)

(b) Any five from [5 marks]

Black = best absorber
=> absorbs more of the Suns radiation / Will reach higher temperature
Temperature increases because Absorbed > Emitted
Temperature increases => Emitted radiation increases
=> until Absorbed = Emitted again
=> new higher equilibrium temperature
