Overarching Goal/ Essential Questions: (Broad question, promotes inquiry, tied to

objective that students that has multiple possible answers.)

Why is it is important to take care of our environment?

Objectives (specific to the lesson):

Students will be able to write one way that we could help stop water pollution.

Assessment (must match the objective):

Students will be assessed on their ability to write one way that we could help stop water
pollution.

Anticipatory Set/Hook:

Has anyone ever gone to a lake, the river, or the ocean before? Did you have fun? What
was it like? Do you think you would have had as much fun if the water were really dirty
and gross? What if you went to a swimming pool and saw water that was dirty, would you
still go swimming? Today we are going to talk about how we affect the environment
around us and what we can do to make it better. At the end of the lesson you will write
down one way that we can help stop water pollution.

Lesson Beginning ( I Do ):
- We have been reading about Jane Goodall and different ways that she says you can help
the environment and save wildlife. Today, we are going to learn about water pollution and
how that harms wildlife. What do you know about water pollution? What are some
pollutants? (write on board) Just like you all would not want to swim in dirty water,
animals dont want to swim in dirty, polluted water either.

Middle of Lesson (We Do/ You do Together): Provide opportunities for students to
engage in the work with assistance from you and collaborate with peers. This is an
opportunity for formative assessment to ensure students understand the content.
-Split the students into three groups of eight. Each group will have a container filled with
water with a sponge fish in it. The fish is connected to fishing wire on either side to make
it stay still. Each student in the group will have a name tag with their role on it:

Construction Worker- soil

Animal- raisins
Golf Course Worker- green water
Road Worker Pouring Salt- salt

Picnic-er- paper
Air Pollution- dish soap
Abandoned Factory- coffee

Car Oil- syrup

Read through the Freddie the Fish cards. Students will dump in their pollutant when their
card is read.

How did humans impact Freddies environment? Did it make it difficult for him to live?
How does what we do affect our environment? What are some ways that we can help
protect our environment? (discuss in groups)

End of Lesson (You Do Alone): Provide an opportunity for students to practice the
content on their own so you can assess learning.
On a sticky note, write down one way that we could help stop water pollution. Once you
have written down your way, stick it onto the door.

Closure (Questions to be asked/Metacognition): Involve the students ask them to

think and communicate about what they learned. Summarize their thinking by tying it
back to the objective and share how this will impact their future learning or lead into the
next lesson.
In our story, Jane Goodall talked about many different ways that we could help save wild
life, do you think stopping pollution is a good way to help save wildlife?
How are the ideas you came up with going to help stop water pollution? Why is it
important to us to stop water pollution and other types of pollution?
