Provided verbal and written advice as part of the audit Protecting BioDiversity: Marine
Protected Areas (MPAs), which examined the performance of Canadian Federal Agencies
tasked with establishing protected areas.
In 2007 and 2009 Consultant, Institute for European Environmental Policy, London, UK
March April 2009: Worked on an interdisciplinary team examining the 2009-2012 review
of the European Unions Common Fisheries Policy (CFP).
August November 2007: Contributed to an Esme Fairbairn Foundation funded project on
Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) as a Tool in Managing Fisheries.
10/2007 2/2009 Marine Protected Areas Coordination Officer, International Union for Conservation of
Nature (IUCN), Washington, DC
Position co-sponsored by IUCN, WWF, Conservation International, and The Nature
Conservancy. Coordinated the four organizations efforts on implementing Marine Protected
Areas (MPAs), including planning the MPA stream of the 2008 World Conservation
Congress held in Barcelona, Spain. Managed over $200,000 in grants from private
foundations and contracts with environmental organizations.

Initiated and oversaw an International Corporate Social Responsibility Taskforce comprised
of corporate vice-presidents, which produced a new internal verification process for social

This introductory course examines historical and modern attitudes towards nature; human use of natural
resources; effects of the growth of science and technology on human uses of and attitudes towards the
environment; and the ability of modern humans to substantially alter the environment. (3 hours/week, 18-25

ENV 216 Environmental Policy
A core course for the Environmental Studies major, this course provides an introduction to the historical
development and current issues of environmental policy in the US, including how federal, state and local
regulations seek to protect human health and the environment. (3 hours/week, 20-25 students) FA 2013, FA

ENV 314 Global Environmental Politics
This upper level course examines the nature and sources of international environmental law and the key actors
and agencies involved in global environmental governance. Principles and objectives examined include
sustainable development, the precautionary principle, the polluter pays principle, and the principle of common
but differentiated responsibilities. Students engage in a real-time simulated negotiation of a multilateral
environmental agreement. (3 hours/week, 16-20 students) SP 2014, SP 2015, FA 2015, SP 2016
ENV 470 Marine Protected Areas (MPAs)
This upper level seminar (open only to juniors and seniors) aims to provide students with in-depth
understanding of a key tool for implementing marine conservation. The latest available information on MPAs is
critical examined, in light of international targets for protected areas, and given the unique challenges posed by
the marine environment for biodiversity conservation. Students undertake independent research on real world

A second year core course in the undergraduate College of Sustainability, providing the environmental
governance component for the Sustainability major. Drawing on global case studies, political ecology and
institutional analysis, the course was structured around three modules: Biodiversity, Food and Agriculture,
Environmental Security. (6 hours/week (equivalent of two courses), 100-125 students)
Graduate:
MARA 5001x Contemporary Issues in Ocean Management and Development
Foundation course for the Master of Marine Management (MMM) degree. Drawing on current events and
issues in marine environmental management and development, the course emphasized the development of
analytical skills including policy analysis, conflict negotiation, and understanding environmental governance.

MARA 5013 Marine Protected Areas
Drawing on global, regional and national examples, this elective course focused on the science, law and
socioeconomic aspects of designing and implementing marine protected areas. In addition to my lectures, some
