Elementary Lesson Plan

Your Name: Shannon Hagerman Grade Level: 6th Time Frame: 2-30 min. classes

Subject: Art

Lesson Title: Mind Mapping

Materials Needed:
- Computer Paper
- Crayons (options of others)
- Video Clip Inside Out

Prerequisite Skills:
- Students need to know how to incorporate elements of design into their work.
- Students need to know how to incorporate principle of design into their work.

Standard(s):
- Anchor Standard #1 Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work.
- Anchor Standard #2 Organize and develop artistic ideas and work.
- Anchor Standard #10 Synthesize and relate knowledge and personal experiences to make
art.

Lesson Objective(s):
- Students will be able to improve their thinking skills through the use of color and texture
while organizing their mind map.
- Students will be able to use their previous knowledge of design principles and elements
to enhance and emphasize main ideas.

1. Provide objectives:
- Students will be creating a mind map that explores their own person interests and values.

2. Demonstrate knowledge or skill:


- Students will consider color theory in relevance to emotions, values, memories, experiences,
etc.

3. Provide guided practice: (Guided practice with the teacher)


- Share example of own mind map
- Think aloud as a class before beginning individual mind maps.

4. Check for understanding and provide student feedback: (How will you know students
understand the skill or concept? How will they know they get it?)?
- Formative visual check of student work while they are completing the task.
- Asking students questions about their mind maps while they are creating them.
5: Provide extended practice and transfer: (Independent practice of the skill)
- Independent work time

6. Assessment / Closure: (How do you evaluate student progress or provide closure to this
lesson?)
- Volunteers will share out their mind maps.
- Individual formative assessment, of questioning.
- Mind maps will not be graded, but we will take note of the students thought processes while
creating their work. Participation points will be given for completing their mind maps, they will
be able to take home these maps after we have viewed them. Mind maps will not be collected.
- Art Therapy is a time to reflect and process

7. Plans for differentiation:


- Students can use only words, only pictures, or a combination of both.
- Students will be allowed to use materials other than crayons upon request.

TOTAL LESSON TIME: Approximately 2 30 minute classes
