1. Host Profiles
Host Profiles works by encapsulating a reference host configuration and turning it into a
profile, or template, upon which other hosts or clusters of hosts can be configured.
Deploying VMware Host Profiles can ensure host conformity in a mixed ESX and ESXi
vSphere infrastructure.

2. High Availability (HA)

VMware HA (High Availability) is a utility that eliminates the need for dedicated standby
hardware and software in a virtualized environment. The utility is part of a virtualization
suite called VMware Infrastructure 3. In IT (information technology), the term high
availability refers to a system or component that is continuously operational for long
periods.

3. Fault Tolerance (FT)

Fault tolerance means there is no loss in the in-memory application state during the event
of a failure such as a host crash. Fault Tolerance is much harder than high availability in a
virtual environment because it should maintain two copies of a virtual machine, each on
separate hosts. As memory and device state change on the primary, these changes have to
be recorded and replayed on the secondary copy at the same time.

4. NFS
Network File System is an open industry protocol standard that is typically used for
computers to access Network Attached Storage systems.

5. ISCSI
Internet Small Computer System Interface is the industry standard that defines how
storage devices connect and transfer data to computers by sending the SCSI commands
over Ethernet networks.

6. Storage I/O Control

In a VMware environment, Storage I/O Control provides much needed control of storage
I/O and should be used to ensure that the performance of your critical VMs are not
affected by VMs from other hosts when there is contention for I/O resources.

7. Virtual SAN
Virtual SAN is a software-defined storage offering from VMware that enables enterprises
to pool their storage capabilities and to instantly and automatically provision virtual
machine storage via simple policies that are driven by the virtual machine.

8. ESXi
 VMware ESXi (formerly ESX) is an enterprise-class, type-1 hypervisor developed by
VMware for deploying and serving virtual computers. As a type-1 hypervisor, ESXi is
not a software application that one installs in an operating system (OS); instead, it
includes and integrates vital OS components, such as a kernel.

9. vRealize Operations Manager

VMware vRealize Suite is a software product suite designed to enable IT professionals to
create and manage hybrid clouds. The vRealize Suite bundles existing management
software, including IT Business Management Suite, vCloud Automation Center (vCAC),
vCenter Operations Management Suite and vCenter LogInsight.

10. AirWatch
VMware AirWatch is an Atlanta-based provider of enterprise mobility management
(EMM) software and standalone management systems for content, applications and
email. In July 2013, the company acquired Motorola Solutions's MSP (Mobility Services
Platform) and extended management capabilities to ruggedized devices.

11. Storage VMotion

Storage vMotion is a component of VMware vSphere that allows the live migration of a
running virtual machine's (VM) file system from one storage system to another, with no
downtime for the VM or service disruption for end users.

12. VM VMotion
VMware VMotion enables the live migration of running virtual machines from one
physical server to another with zero downtime, continuous service availability, and
complete transaction integrity. It is transparent to users. VMotion lets you perform
hardware maintenance without any scheduled downtime.

13. Dynamic Resource Scheduler (DRS)

VMware DRS (Distributed Resource Scheduler) is a utility that balances computing
workloads with available resources in a virtualized environment. The utility is part of a
virtualization suite called VMware Infrastructure 3.

14. Distributed Power Management

Consolidation of physical servers into virtual machines that share host physical resources
can result in significant reductions in the costs associated with hardware maintenance and
power consumption. VMware Distributed Power Management (VMware DPM) provides
additional power savings beyond this initial benefit by dynamically consolidating
workloads even further during periods of low resource utilization. Virtual machines are
migrated onto fewer hosts and the unneeded ESX hosts are powered off. VMware DPM
is an optional feature of VMware Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS).

15. Standard Switch

In virtualization terminology, VSwitch is short for Virtual Switch and represents
networking entities connecting Virtual Machines in a virtual network at layer 2. The
 Virtual Switch is fully virtual and can be connected to a NIC (Network Interface Card).
The VMware Virtual Switch is a switching fabric built into the VMware infrastructure
(ESX) that allows you to network your Virtual Machines (VMs).

16. Distribution Switch

A VMware vSphere Distributed Switch (VMware vDS) allows a single virtual switch to
connect multiple hosts in a cluster or multiple clusters for centralized management of
network configurations in a vSphere environment.

17. Virtual Volumes

VVOLs, which is short for Virtual Volumes, enables an administrator to apply a policy to
a VM which defines the various performance and service-level agreement requirements,
such as RAID level, replication or deduplication. The VM is then automatically placed on
the storage array that fits those requirements.

18. Traffic Shaping

Traffic shaping (also known as packet shaping) is a computer network traffic
management technique which delays some or all datagrams to bring them into
compliance with a desired traffic profile.

19. NetFlow
NetFlow is a networking protocol designed by Cisco Systems for logging and recording
the flow of traffic received and sent within a network. NetFlow was designed in
collaboration with Enterasys Switches. It provides network traffic statistics by collecting
related data from enabled routers and switches.

20. Port Mirroring

Port Mirroring, also known as SPAN (Switched Port Analyzer), is a method of
monitoring network traffic. With port mirroring enabled, the switch sends a copy of all
network packets seen on one port (or an entire VLAN) to another port, where the packet
can be analyzed.

21. Long Distance VMotion

Long-distance vMotion is a feature available in VMware vSphere 6.0 that allows virtual
machines (VMs) to be migrated over long distances. Long-distance vMotion raises the
allowable network round-trip latency that vSphere will allow; this vastly extends the
potential migration distance for virtual machines

22. Cross Switch VMotion

VMware Cross vCenter vMotion is a feature introduced in vSphere 6.0 that allows virtual
machines (VMs) to switch from one vCenter Server instance to another to change the
compute, network, storage and management of the VM concurrently.

23. Datastore
 A data store is a repository for persistently storing and managing collections of data
which include not just repositories like databases, but also simpler store types such as
simple files, emails etc. A database is a series of bytes that is managed by a database
management system (DBMS).

24. Logical Unit Number (LUN)

In computer storage, a logical unit number, or LUN, is a number used to identify a logical
unit, which is a device addressed by the SCSI protocol or Storage Area Network
protocols which encapsulate SCSI, such as Fibre Channel or iSCSI.

25. Raw Device Mapping (RDM)

Raw device mapping (RDM) is an option in the VMware server virtualization
environment that enables a storage logical unit number (LUN) to be directly connected to
a virtual machine (VM) from the storage area network (SAN).

26. NSX
VMware NSX is a virtual networking and security software product family created from
VMware's vCloud Networking and Security (vCNS) and Nicira Network Virtualization
Platform (NVP) intellectual property.

27. Netowrk I/O Control

VMware vSphere Network I/O Control (NIOC) is a feature that allows an administrator
to prioritize bandwidth for different network resource pools on a vNetwork Distributed
Switch (vDS).

28. VSphere Data Protection

With VMware vSphere 5.1 (vSphere 5.1), VMware is releasing a new backup and
recovery solution for virtual machines called vSphere Data Protection (VDP). This
solution is fully integrated with VMware vCenter Server(vCenter Server) and provides
agentless, disk-based backup of virtual machines to deduplicated storage.

29. VSphere Replication

VSphere Replication is a feature of vSphere 5.0 and Site Recovery Manager (SRM) 5.0
that automates the failover of virtual servers to a recovery site. vSphere Replication
enables the replication of virtual machines (VMs) at the virtual layer instead of at the
storage layer, as was required with earlier versions of vSphere and SRM.

30. Change Block Tracking

Changed Block Tracking (CBT) is an incremental backup technology for VMware virtual
machines (VMs). Like snapshot differentials or delta differencing, CBT backs up only the
blocks that have changed, rather than backing up every block of every VM in the
infrastructure.

31. VMware Tools

 VMware Tools is an optional, free set of drivers and utilities that enhances both the
performance of a virtual machine's guest operating system and interaction between the
guest and the host.

32. Fiber Channel over Ethernet

Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) is a computer network technology that encapsulates
Fibre Channel frames over Ethernet networks. This allows Fibre Channel to use 10
Gigabit Ethernet networks (or higher speeds) while preserving the Fibre Channel
protocol.

33. Fiber Channel

Fibre Channel, or FC, is a high-speed network technology (commonly running at 1, 2, 4,
8, 16, 32, and 128 gigabit per second rates) primarily used to connect computer data
storage to servers. Fibre Channel is mainly used in storage area networks (SAN) in
enterprise storage.

34. Resource Pool

A VMware resource pool is the aggregated physical compute hardware -- CPU and
memory, as well as other components -- allocated to virtual machines (VMs) in a
VMware virtual infrastructure.

35. Big Data Extension

VMware vSphere Big Data Extensions (BDE) is a virtual appliance that enables
administrators to deploy and manage the Hadoop clusters for big data analytics in the
vSphere virtual infrastructure.

36. Storage Replication

A storage replication service is a managed service in which stored or archived data is
duplicated in real time over a storage area network (SAN). Other terms for this type of
service include file replication, data replication, and remote storage replication.

37. SRM
Site Recovery Manager (SRM) is a disaster recovery management product from VMware
that provides automated failover and disaster recovery testing.

38. VMFS
VMware VMFS (Virtual Machine File System) is a cluster file system that facilitates
storage virtualization for multiple installations of VMware ESX Server, a hypervisor that
partitions physical servers into multiple virtual machines. VMFS is part of the
virtualization suite called VMware Infrastructure 3.

39. VMDK
 VMDK (Virtual Machine Disk) is a file format that describes containers for virtual hard
disk drives to be used in virtual machines like VMware Workstation or VirtualBox.

40. Hot-Add Feature

VMware vSphere hot add is a feature that allows an administrator to increase the random
access memory (RAM) capacity of a running virtual machine (VM) without downtime.

41. Auto Deploy

vSphere Auto Deploy can provision hundreds of physical hosts with ESXi software. You
can specify the image to deploy and the hosts to provision with the image. Optionally,
you can specify host profiles to apply to the hosts, and a vCenter Server folder or cluster
for each host.

42. Template
A VMware template (also callled a golden image) is a perfect, model copy of a virtual
machine (VM) from which an administrator can clone, convert or deploy more virtual
machines.

43. VMWare DataCenter

Unlike a folder, which is used to organize a specific object type, a datacenter is an
aggregation of all the different types of objects needed to do work in virtual
infrastructure: Virtual machines (and templates), Hosts (and clusters), Networks,
Datastores

44. VMWare Cluster

A collection of ESX/ESXi hosts and associated virtual machines intended to work
together as a unit. When you add a host to a cluster, the host's resources become part of
the cluster's resources. The cluster manages the resources of all hosts. VMware Features
like EVC, DRS, DPM and HA are enabled on a per Cluster basis.
