Planning-

In my Personal Project I plan to shine light on the fairness of how they dont get

paid, but they profit off of NCAA basketball and football players and the coaches are

getting paid and to my knowledge theyre getting a big house on the campus. In my

opinion and many different athletes who put there body on the line each and every play

to entertain us fans. So for my final product I will be having a survey from a lot of my

peers coaches, administrators, and family members. I have copied down several

conversations between me and a former City College alumni Nayshon Godfrey, my

Coach Daryl Wade, Coach Omarr Smith, ect. One of the many ways ive been

showing self-managing skills is Communication, is one of the most essential skills which

required for both personal development and career advancement. Also Time

Management is another important skill ive been utilizing this is great because this

shows how ive been using my time effectively and not been using my time on anything

unproductive. In my journey through this project there have been a lot of ups & Downs

during this project especially when im trying to study for big summatives in different

classes and with this Ap-Literature course ive been taking this has been a difficult

process. I expected this when they first assigned it so I started the process journal in the

summer time where I did most of my researching and conducting my interviews and

started marking the completion steps and I already complete the first 8 steps before

school even started. One important skill I learned in my personal project is checking my

sources to evaluate different information founded in the different sources to show

accuracy of the website, validity, appropriateness for needs, and cultural context. One of

the many challenges I was having at first was i didnt have the time to fully evaluate all
of the sources, as I would like too. Also I will have a website as my final product as my

personal product it will have everything else in my product and will have my survey in

the website so everything will be more layed out and appealing. I also plan on getting

help from the library to show me how to actually cite my sources and theyll help me

checking out different autobiographies of different sports players so I can see their

opinion on the topic that im revolving this project around.

Investigating-

In my personal project I plan on talking about this on-going problem should

college athletes and should they get paid or not. My area of focus in my global context

is Fairness and Development Rights and Responsibilities. In my project I will be

discussing how College coaches such as Coach K who coaches Duke university whose

yearly salary is $7.2 Million, but theres college athletes who put their lives/bodies on the

line each play and who dont get paid at all. During my investigating I will need

knowledge of different opinions from people who actually work in sports such as ESPN

talk show analysis and basically experts at there job. Ive been jotting down everything

their different opinions, but I also still recognized that there is a counter argument to be

made brought by mike and mike they discussed how if we start paying athletes

everyone will stop working harder because theyll be getting paid like a professional

athlete (NFL,NBA, NHL etc) But another thing ill be doing as-well is interviewing

past/former high school athletes especially ones who went to City College such as

Nayshon Godfrey, Benjamin Stanley, Robert Miller and my Uncle Darius Lyne and his

friend Tyler Grant. While investigating and talking to different people and while looking

these topics up it has made it much more easier to find out and finalize my product for
the personal project. One of my ATL(Approaching To Learning) ive been utilizIng is

self-management because I havent been coming home until 9pm for basketball practice

so Ive been trying to complete this project. One of the many different ways Ive been

trying to maintain this self-management task is to download the after school app, this

helps me strategize this different personal project and many different projects and

exams during this stressful time. So this is how I am using this ATL skill and different

ways ive been keeping these different assignments inline and not falling behind. One of

many ways ive did my research were using credible sources such as different school

data based systems such as (Jstorg.org) and checking out different sports articles

online such as (Espn.com) (New York times.com) and many different ones. Ive been

showing my peers the importance of having primary sources because you cant always

trust/believe what you see in a secondary source because it might be different/wrong

information. And ive been talking to my former English teacher Ms.Phelps and shes

giving me examples of like what not to do in my personal project which is waiting to last

minute to completing my steps and ive taken this advice very strongly. Also former

students have been telling me helpful steps that I should follow like dont miss a

deadline and whatever i do dont turn in the product late because that will kill my gpa.

Taking Action-

My final product is to essentially to persuade my audience that College Athletes should

be paid there ive also decided to take a survey so I can get everyones opinion on the

question where I will be then showing a pie chart on everyones opinion on the topic at

hand and on my personal project question which is Should College athletes get paid or
not? I cant necessarily get this changed because that has to NCAA which I cannot

control, but this could shine a light on my global context fairness and equality and that

tells me if I was the only person that was thinking its crazy how College Coaches are

the ones that get paid and they get a house on the campus, but the Athletes are the

ones who put their lives on the line. In my taking action I will be conducting research on

different places like Espn com, Ncaa.com, CBS.com, and I will be reading different

books through the library such as autobiographies of former basketball players like

Julius Erving, Charles Barkley and Michael Jordan. In each one of their autobiographies

they speak about their college days how they struggled to make ends meet to go to

college because they all didnt have scholarships. So they give me a different hindsight

on the topic and gave me the keys I needed to complete this project successfully. My

friends have encouraged me to go deeper into this topic since I hang-out with a lot of

student athletes they support my opinion that College athletes should get paid because

the coaches get paid and they have a house on campus. Also whenever I do taking

action I always want to get advice from different people on how to go about this process

from people to like my Advisor Mr.Alston hes saying that when he performed at Duke

University all the mall and the strips were closed down for the big Duke game.

Whenever they have a game everyone directs their attention towards the game and

they have there own type of cafe inside the arena so all the money that they make gets

revenued in the building, but the players get none of that money. Im also getting help
from Coach Wade and Coach Omar and their saying athletes are the ones who are

actually playing the game they should get paid just like professional athletes. But its

another side to this that we arent actually professional athletes we havent signed a

contract like nba/ football/ tennis players so nobody is actually obligated to pay college

athletes and thats why colleges shouldnt pay us. So ill half to further investigate this

topic to view both sides of the fence one side saying its not fair that the athletes dont

get paid, but the coaches get paid and thats not right, but the side thats saying they are

still students and they havent made it yet to start being paid to play a sport. So this how

I plan on taking action in this personal project so these

Reflection-

This Personal Project in itself has been a very tedious project to complete. There

has been a lot of trials and tribulations this project wouldve been a lot harder if I didnt

start this project in the summer time because the time management. And I didnt expect

this to be that difficult this interfered into some of my school progress with the stress

over personal project Ive been bringing my laptop to school everyday to school. I

sometimes use it in extended time and ive even asked some of my teachers can I used

their class time for this project and they generously did that and I applaud those

teachers for helping me do and complete this project. A lot of my friends have helped

me and encouraged me not to slack on this because I myself as a student athlete

(Basketball player and Track Player) they all think this issue needs to be shined on

since nobody they knew talked about this on their personal project their pushing me to
do this. This also helped me to not fall behind teachers can repetitively tell a student to

do their personal project, but when your friends/peers start telling you to do it it kind of

influences us more and I think thats the case for me. So in conclusion this project has

been a tedious task for me to complete and if I had any advice for the 9th graders or

any other person who has to deal with this personal project is to start in the summer

time or at least just start doing your process journal because I knew I woulda slacked off

this personal Project had I not started in the summer. Also, sitting back and reflecting on

this process towards the end I started getting lazy towards the end while everyone's out

here stressing Im confident about my product that I dont need to check over it, but my

advisor Mr.Alston is letting me know that I should check over everything because you

never know what I might have to go over and you dont know what the expectation they

have for the personal project. And I talked to my friend Ajanay Nicholson she told me

That you could never be too sure that youre done with this project this is a year long

project and a big part of your overall GPA this can help your GPA out or this can hurt it

and its your choice. And when I went back and reviewed my personal project I noticed

I only had 6 annotated bibliographies and she helped me so now I have 10

bibliographies and now I owe that all to her because she helped me go over it and look

over it to make sure it look right. When looking back on this project I got lazy towards

the end and I found myself trying to catch up and rush it in a product when I know that I

should have been complete this project. Another advice I would have for anyone who

has to complete this project is to please dont slack off this project because this will

come back and bite you in the but if you continue to procrastinate like me. Like im doing

it and ill get this done and will get a pretty decent grade, but this isnt the way you
should go because teachers are having summatives and they dont really care about

personal project because they still have to teach their class a perfect example is in my

french class mr.Djmejou he says why do I need to take time from my class so you can

finish something that was given out at least 6 months ago. This is also relevant in my

chemistry class we have a summative tomorrow so I have to study tonight, but this

will be interfered by my personal project and with that being said it would've been

smarter of me to have this assignment finished like last week. So that's another tip I

would give someone is to not count on teachers to give you time on personal project

because they want you to finish outside of school and they treat this like this is a

separate class.

Annotated Bibliography

Patterson, Tiffany. "Should College Athletes Be Paid?" SmartAsset. N.p., 26 Sept.

2016. Web. 30 Nov. 2016.

This is shows you different Pros & Cons with paying college athletes they bring up very

fascinating points such as College athletes put their bodies on the line each time they

play. For example Kevin Ware suffered a terrible injury to his lower right leg while

attempting to block a shot. He is very lucky because he was able to comeback in 6

months, but most football players and other basketball players become paralyzed. They

also bring up very interesting points on why they shouldnt get paid such as paying

college athletes will detract them from the purity of the game.
Kiernan, John S. "Should College Athletes Be Paid? Experts Weigh In." WalletHub. N.p.,

n.d. Web. 30 Nov. 2016.

College Athletes should be paid because the NCAA brings in almost a trillion dollars in

revenue and the coaches get paid, but its unfair because the players are the ones

putting their bodies on the line each and every play. There are different types of

negatives with the college athletes to get paid. Because some of them are on a

scholarship at their respected college and they shouldnt need to get paid because they

dont have to worry about paying tuition.

Wilbon, Michael. "Wilbon: Pay (some Of) the Players." ESPN.com. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Nov.

2016.

In this article it brings up the equality factor because one of the famous basketball coaches

coach K makes 4.7 and has been working for Duke since 1980. He has not once played

a game or put his body on the line, but the players do and they should be able to be

paid.

"Here's Why We Shouldn't Pay College Athletes." Time. Time, n.d. Web. 30 November

2016.
He says schools gives a lot of money away with scholarships and they bring up the point

that if we give people money to play one sport well have to be fair and pay everyone whos

playing a sport such as wrestling, tennis, badminton, Track & Field etc.

How to Create a Weebly. Dir. Tech MindBlow. Perf. John and Carrey.youtube.com N.p., 23 Mar.
2013. Web. 14 Feb. 2017.

This helped me create my final product on the website, because my final product is on
my website where I lay everything out and with out this video I couldnt create my website and
that would be bad and I couldve have points taken off.

ESPN, ESPN.com News Services via. "Michigan's Jim Harbaugh Leads College Football Coaches in

Salary." ABC News. ABC News Network, 26 Oct. 2016. Web. 14 Feb. 2017.

As a dangerous sport as football is this is completely crazy how Jim Harbaugh gets paid 9.9

million a year in order to coach this team when he doesnt play a single snap of the game. All im

saying is he should get paid for this, but I need fair/equal treatment for the players as well if the

coach gets paid the players have to get paid. Like Highschool Basketball/Football since the student

athletes dont get paid the coaches dont get paid.

Tylt, The. "Should College Athletes Be Paid?"cleveland.com N.p., 18 Oct. 2016. Web. 14 Feb. 2017.

This is supporting my cause because this is basically giving me more information as to

why this is unfair because the athletes are the one who normally are the ones getting hurt each

play and this just justifies what ive been restating.

McCauley Mccauley@dailylocal.com @k_mac_14 on Twitter, Kieran. "College Athletes

Shouldnt Be Paid." College Athletes Shouldnt Be Paid. Daily Local News, 28 Apr. 2015. Web. 14

Feb. 2017.

To every claim there is always a counter-claim now in this article its stating that having kids

in this article it states that college athletes will be coming to school for the wrong reasons not to get

any education, but to get money. Another thing is in question is what sports will be getting paid

because if youre giving money to the basketball, football players youd better be giving that money

to the wrestling players, track, and soccer. And I dont think the funds can support that and even

clubs like bocce ball team thats not gonna sit well with basketball/football players then theyll

demand more money and to eliminate this whole problem we just need to not pay them.

Mitchell, Horace. "Students Are Not Professional Athletes." U.S. News & World Report. U.S.

News & World Report, 6 Jan. 2014. Web. 14 Feb. 2017.

In this article this speaks about how the students shouldnt be treated as professional

athletes. Mitchell is saying that they havent earned the right to actually call themselves professional

athletes and they havent signed any contracts in college with a salary. Also, if student athletes are

being paid they will become lazy because for some people who dont love their sport theyll only be

in it for the money. If they're being paid they wont even try to make it into the league since there

already getting paid.

Yankah, Ekow N. "Why N.C.A.A. Athletes Shouldnt Be Paid." The New Yorker. The New

Yorker, 14 Oct. 2015. Web. 14 Feb. 2017.

Lastly, this speaks about how college athletes are more likely to drop outta college after

they're getting enough money since theyll be on scholarships and theyre making a lot of extra

money theyll not appreciate the art of school.
