CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Introduction is the first part in a research. This part contains the background of the study,
the limitation of the problem, the problem statement, the objectives of study, the previous study,
benefits of the study, and key terms.

a. Background of the study

Communication has become an essential part of human life. There are many ways that
people use to communicate to each other, for delivering information, messages, opinions,
speech, and thoughts. Language is an effective tool to communicate to each other and
understand what is uttered.
Hodge and Kress, cited by Aghagolzadeh and Asadpour (2010: 139), believe that
Language is an instrument of control as well as a means of communication. Therefore,
language is very essential to all citizens related to communication and interaction.
Similarly, Halliday in Sumarlan says language has interactional function. (2009:2). It
means they communicate by using language in order to accomplish social interaction in
community. Thus Fairlaugh (1989:23) says that language is part of society. So,
language and society have connection each other. The relation between language and
society are studied in sociolinguistics. According to Wardaugh (1993:13), sociolinguistic
is concerned with investigating the relationships between language and society with the
goal being a better understanding of the structure of language and of how languages
function in communication. This means that sociolinguistic is the study about how
language is used by society in communication. According to Fairclough, he says that
language is social practice and language seen as discourse. (1989: vii).
b. Limitation of the study
In conducting the research, the researcher limits the problem that is going to be discussed.
This research focuses on variety of features: there are some varieties such as the use of
tag questions, interuptions, questions, standard forms and minimal responses. The
researcher chooses to analyze deeper in the use of tag questions while it is interesting to
be correlated with gender, the inclination that the women and men use.

c. The problem statement

The problem statement is the key to formulate this study. Therefore, based on the
background of the study above, to conduct an appropriate research thereare problem
statement to discuss:
