Week 1 Assignment 2
Figure 1
The Open Door Fellowship Church extends a helping hand through the Open Door
Ministries by reaching out to people in urban Denver who are homeless or low income. They
have seven homes for different groups of need. The home to be focused on here is the Esther
House. This home is transitional housing for women, and those specically who are leaving the
sex trafcking industry. They also accept women who are in other difcult situations such as
addictions. It is located in Denver, Colorado. Jessica Wilson is the program director and was
able to provide information about the Esther house and the services they provide.
The Esther House is a two year transitional housing option for women. It is a Christian
faith based program. They focus on helping the women to transition into healthy productive lives
through faith in Christ. The program is two years to provide healing from their past terrible
situations and give them the tools they need to succeed in the world. The program requires
work from the tenant and is not free. Rent is $300 per month, however they do have a sliding
has a personal mentor to help them on their journey back into a productive life. The mentors live
in the house with the residents. The mentors job is not to babysit but to encourage and teach
important skills. They help the individuals set goals toward employment, education, and other
needed life skills like cleaning or budget management. The important aspect of the mentors
Another part of life at the Esther House is implementing responsibilities. Skills are an
important part of the transition from lives of abusive and addition into life of stability and health.
There are rules and curfews that all are expected to abide by. This is to allow for a safe home
Health is a large point of emphasis in the Esther House. The home is to be a sober
haven for the women who live there. No alcohol or drugs of any kind are tolerated at the home.
Also counseling for mental health is important for the residents. In addition to the help of the
mentors, the women have access to mental health professionals to help them move past things
in their past and move on to a healthy future. Most of the women in the home have been a part
of the sex trade industry, there is education provided to address topics to prevent them from
actually used to be a brothel and now has been converted into housing of hope. Since it
provides housing for single women, it is not individual apartments. It is a home with main living
areas and kitchen and then individual bedrooms for one to two women. They also have a couple
of ofces for meeting and education. The furniture are just simple and
In the end, the Esther House is a comfortable and safe home to provide a smooth
transition for the women who live there. By the end of their two years, they should be living a
sober lifestyle and ready to be an active and productive individual in society. Open Door
Ministries are providing hundreds of people help to transition from homelessness to employment
Figure 1
Figure 2
This analogous color scheme features tints and tones of blue and
green. Grey and soft whites will be added to enhance the color
palette and give subtle neutrals to work with. By bringing in these
colors of nature, green is soothing on vision and blue implies
serenity, quietness and unity. (Psychology of color). It is a
timeless color palette that can provide a calm home to escape the
chaos of the world.
Color Scheme 3: Warm Analogous
Figure 3
This Federal Era rug contains an analogous color scheme features
tones and shades of red, orange, yellow, and green. These colors
are classic colors in the Federal style which will compliment the
historical preservation of the building. Red and yellows promote
motion and change. This seems important for a transitional home
to help empower residents to change their lives for the better
(Psychology of color).
Custom Color Scheme 1
This primary color scheme contains red, blue, and yellow. The home is in
the Federal style so a soft green and wood tone brown were added to
enhance the historical signicance. The blue, greens, brown, and whites
are to be used as the naturals throughout the project to create a soothing
atmosphere. The red and yellow are added sparingly throughout the space
to invigorate action and happiness. Most of the colors are shades and
tones of the natural hue. The adding of black and gray to the hue softens
the color and adds a historical feeling.

The project design was inspired by the architectural style of the building and the
services that the transition home provides. Beginning with the Federal style, the
furnishings, color palette, wall, oor, and ceiling details all were selected and designed
to reect the characteristics of the Federal era. The color palette is a dominant element
of the design with soft with pastels colors of blues, grays, and yellows. It is a soothing
feature is the use of symmetry. This is a nod to the Federal style but also is to
encourage a balanced life. A subdominant design principle is the use of line. The oor
and ceiling designs feature lines running along the space as well as the wall treatment.
The lines give a sense of continuity and draws the eyes around the spaces.
Reaching the needs of the women and children was critical to the design of the
home. There were a child care center, and a class room added to the gathering space
to ensure that there were spaces for services to be provided. The furnishing in the
gathering spaces and the apartments are comfortable and high quality to give a sense
of home for the women and children but are all in the Federal style to keep the design
cohesive. The custom built in wall unit in the gathering space is intended to be used for
book and other learning material storage. This gives the women a place to go to nd
Many alterations to the initial design were made in order to meet the egress
requirements and to create a universal design. The furnishings were selecting not only
because of their style and quality but also their dimensions. The furniture is places to
ensure 60 diameter turn arounds at all necessary points. Also to meet ADA guidelines,
there was attention to the bathrooms specically to ensure there are the required
handrails and clearances. In the end, the design is cohesive, functional, and beautiful.
Reection
This course has been challenging and time consuming but a positive indicator
that the eld of Interior Design is a rewarding profession. The rst topic that helped me
the most was our work with the budget. It was important for me to learn how to make a
budget sheet for the nishings that I selected and how to track my time and t it within
my budget. It was interesting to see which elements of the design process took most of
my time. Another topic that was good for me to review was the ADA criteria that were
crucial for the apartments to reach the standards. With this home, there are public
spaces and private residential spaces. Both spaces are important to reach ADA
standards to allow accessibility for anyone who might stay in the transitional home. The
nal topic that I found most helpful to me was rendering the spaces. I feel like rendering
is always going to be a skill that I need to work on and improve. The space I designed
was more challenging to render because of the intricate details of the furniture and the
oor and ceiling elements. The Federal style is highly details so it was important for me
to show these details through my drawings.
The team work at the beginning of the course was a wonderful experience. It was
nice having team mates to begin the design process with. We all learned a lot about the
Federal design. There were three of us bringing together the information I feel like we all
learned more than if we did it ourselves. It also gave me people to turn to through out
the rest of the process. I could look to them on how they were interpreting the style to
gain more insight on my own personal designs. I hope to continue to have positive team
experiences throughout the rest of my schooling and career.
