TheW05isMercedes'purposebuiltF1carforthe2014regulations,attemptingtoexceedtheresultsofthe
W04duringtheyearbefore,duringwhichMercedesfinishedsecondintheConstructors'Championship.
Thecarhaditsshakedownon24Januaryat14:21atSilverstoneCircuitbeforeitwasshippedtoJerez,
Spainforthefirstwintertest.Earlyinthemorningofthefirstdayoftestingitwasalsoofficiallylaunched
inthepitlanewithdriversNicoRosbergandLewisHamiltonunveilingittothepublic.

Technically,thecarincludestheMercedesBenzPU106AHybridthroughwhichtheteamwasableto
benefitfromclosecooperationbetweenthechassisandenginedepartment,somethingthatisamajor
advantagecomparedtoteamsthatarecustomersfortheengines.Underneathsleeksidepodsisabouttwice
theradiatorsurfacecomparedto2013duetoincreasedcoolingrequirementsfromtheelectrical
componentsandtheturbocharger.Stilltheteamappearedtohavemanagedafairlytightpackage,evenon
itslaunchcar.

Remarkablefeaturesasofthelaunchwereahighlydevelopedfrontwingandaninterestingsolutiontothe
noseconeregulations.Tomatchtheminimumsection50mmbehindthetipofthenose,theteamdesigned
ininverseUsection.Thissectionwasnotpartofthecrashtest,butinsteadonlydesignedtomatchthe
dimensionregulations,alongwithsupportingthefrontwingthrough2veryshortpylonsthatattachedon
eachsideofthenose.Thismakesitaverylownosecone,similartoFerrari'sdesignatJerez,albeitthat
Ferrarididnotthickenthefrontwingpylonstomeettheregulations,butinsteadhadasomewhatthicker
centralsectionofthenose.
Thefrontsuspensionisalsoofparticularinterestasthelowerwishbonepickuppointsarecloselybehind
eachotherinanattempttousethesuspensionelementstotheaerodynamicbenefitofcontrollingthe
upwashgeneratedbythefrontwing.Thelowertubandnosealsomeanthatthefrontpushrodsuspension
featuresslightlymorehorizontalwishboneswhilethepushrodrockeritselfiscoveredbyasmall
aerodynamicpaneljustbehindthefrontbulkhead.Again,thisisaregulatoryworkaroundtotrytohavethe

tubashighaspossible,increasingairflowunderneath.Mercedesalsodecidedtoalignthesteeringarm
withthefrontalupperwishboneforaerodynamicpurposeswhileotherteamssteppedawayfromthis
approachyearsago.
TherearendprovedmoretraditionalintheJerezversion,withtherearwingbeingmountedontwopillars,
bendingaroundthecentralexhaustpipethatisaimedslightlyupward,asmuchastheregulationsallow.
Therearsuspensionmeanwhileisstillapullroddesign,bythenacommodityinFormulaOne.
Thecarsoonprovedfairlyreliablecomparedtoitscompetitors,butonday2oftheJerezwintertest,a
brokenfrontwingcausedLewisHamiltontocrashoff,requiringtheteamtoflyanewfrontwingover
fromBrackleytocontinuetestingthenextday.Thehiccupdidnotprovidearealsetbackfortheteam,as
otherswerestrugglingbadlywiththeirnewpowerunits.

BythesecondandfinalpreseasontestatBahrain,Mercedesclearlyemergedastheleadingforcewithits
carrunningreliablywhereastheRenaultpoweredteamscontinuedtostrugglewithelectronicsandheat
expelledfromtheturboandenergyrecoverysystems.Managementofthisheatwasaparticularstrengthof
thecar'spowerunit,theMercedesPU106A.Uniquelyontheengineareitsseparateturbineand
compressor,withthecompressorlocatedatthefrontoftheengine,connectedwithashafttowardsthe
compressor,locatedbehindthecylinderbanks.Inbetweenthetwo,MercedesneatlypackagedtheERSH
motor,allowingforatightoverallpackage.
