Driving loop access is open from the 3rd week in February
through end of May on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 8
AM to 5 PM.

Directions: From Leesburg, take US 441 south (east) 2 mi. to


CR 44. Take CR 44 northeast 4.7 mi. to Emeralda Ave.
(formerly Lisbon Rd.) and turn left (N). When road comes to a T,
turn left and follow Emeralda Island Rd. northwest 0.5 mi. to
interpretive drive access on left side of road. Additional access
to marsh property is on both sides of Emeralda Island Rd., (from
intersection with Emeralda Ave., 0.9 mi. on left, and 1.4 and 3
mi. on right). Expect occasional closures for this area’s ongoing
restoration. Treasure Island access: From Leesburg, take US
441 south (east) 2 mi. to CR 44. Take CR 44 northeast 2.6 mi.
to Treasure Island Rd. Turn left, and proceed to four-way stop.
Continue north on North Treasure Island Ave. to site at the end.

occur here.

Description: This 4,000-acre WMA lies just to the W of the


Kissimmee River and consists of xeric oak and palm hammocks
and upland pastures. A 7.5-mile section of the Florida Trail runs
the length of the area. Swallow-tailed kites, wild turkey, and
woodland songbirds can be found here. Watch for scrub-jays on
telephone wires, and burrowing owls and caracaras in pastures
along US 98.

Directions: Site is located between Lorida and Fort Basinger on


US 98. Entrance and trailhead parking are on US 98, 7.9 miles
west of the Kissimmee River Bridge and Fort Basinger, 0.5
miles west of the Istokpoga Canal, and 2.5 mi. S of the
intersection with CR 621.

New East Sites Added in 2008
In March 2008, 47 locations were selected by the steering committee and the Florida Fish &
Wildlife Conservation Commission to be part of the Great Florida Birding Trail. These sites are
listed below. Sites marked as "WAV" are not primary GFBT sites, but are designated as "Worth a
Visit" sites if you are already in the area.

A new guide booklet for the East Section of the GFBT is in progress. We anticipate the guide will
be available by the end of 2010.
