Poultry farming

present condition:
Nepal is an agricultural country where majority of people depend upon agriculture for their
livelihood. Poultry sector is one of the fastest growing livestock sector in Nepal with two
distinct pattern of poultry production intensive and scavenging.

In response to meet the urban demand for meat and egg, commercial poultryproduction is
growing rapidly by more than three times in recent years. Poultry offers major advantages over
other enterprises due to its low cost protein source, low generation interval, complementary
role of poultry on other farming practices. In spite of its' potentiality, competition with human
and other animal food sources, high cost of production, new disease challenges, low technical
efficiency, lack of genetic improvement of economic traits of local breeds, adverse climatic
condition due to climate change and unstable market for egg and meat are creating the major
problem for sustainability. Special emphasis should be given on research of locally feasible
production technology, suitable poultry breeds and management. Public private
partnershippolicy involving poultry entrepreneurs with priority on scrutiny of poultry diseases,
control, eradication and sustentation of poultry sector would be valuable. It will give new
momentum towards the sustainability of poultry farming program in different clusters of Nepal.

problems:
Lack of modern laboratories:

The lack of modern laboratory for diagnosing diseases in Chicken and checking the quality of
feed and meat are some of the major setbacks facing poultry industry in Nepal. so proper
inspection and construction of storage laboratories could contribute to minimizing the diseases
in Chickens.

the poor marketing system:

The poor marketing system is the main problem. This is mainly due to less coordination among
the farmers, integrators, and middlemen and government agencies. Lack of processing
information is the causes of poor marketing performance.
Poor management and other support facilities:

The support facilities such as veterinary services, concentrated feeds, breeding and others are
limited and confined in accessible areas only. The management condition are also poor in many
case. There must be enough space for each bird and sufficient waterers, feeders, nest boxes
and perches. If day-old chicks are brought, they must be kept warm and fed a correct diet.

Shrinking feed resources and lack of quality feed ingredients:

Most farmers believe the major problem as the unavailability of fresh and healthy chicks. The
quality of poultry products is also not satisfactory.

Wrong types of chicken:

The chickens may have come originally from other country. They may only be able to produce
well in a very different type of housing, or under a different management system and
environment.

Inaccurate budgeting:

The farmers or project members need to work out accurately, before beginning, exactly how
much food growing chickens eat. Other costs medicines, vaccines, equipment must be
added.

Lack of proper government policies:

There is no clear policy for livestock development and the livestock sector development is not
the first priority of the government. There is a lack of insurance of the poultry produced.

Unawareness of the farmers and follow of conventional system:

Farmers are not aware about the various types of improved management practices, the
development of new technologies. In other words, the farmers themselves are practising
traditional farming system.
