Archdiocese Celebrates World Day for Consecrated Life

Women Advocates for Peace in Fr. Nil Guillemette SJ: Priest,

Six men and 12
women came together on
the suggestion of ACDO
Archbishop Ledesma to start
a group of women advocates
for peace. They gathered at
the Archbishops House on
January 3, 2017, and shared on
what peace means for them:
personally, in the family, in
the school/workplace, and in
the bigger community. They
also shared the meaning of
unpeace and its causes.
It was a wonder for such
a small group to have such
varied experiences, shared so
openly, and arrive at a wealth
of learnings. They realized
the need to be strongly
committed to let the seed/
bulb of peace germinate, grow,
flower and hopefully bear
fruit. The secret, which may be
discovered by those who listen
to the unspoken but intelligible
words of creation, is that
the God of everything and
everyone, in His great mercy
and foresight, generously
prepared all of them for
that great day, without their
knowing it. For those present,
they may realize the meaning
through deeper reflection. For
those who were not there, they
can read on, understand with
their minds, and opt with their
hearts to join the group, and
realize how their respective
God is calling them, too.
The participants consisted
of a UCCP lady, a Muslim lady,
two lay Catholic ladies, eight
members of the Association
of Women Religious of the
Archdiocese of Cagayan de
Oro (AWRACO) representing
six congregations, and six
seminarians of Saint John
Vianney Theological Seminary.
The assembly started with a
getting-to-know-you activity
on the history and meaning
of each ones name and its
relation to peace advocacy.
In a short time the distinct
personalities became a group
with a united purpose, showing
the truth of the saying: There
are no strangers among us, only
future friends. In their case,
they were new friends traveling
towards the same quest: peace,
and what they can do, no matter
how insignificant, to hopefully
contribute to its realization.
Here are the results of the
workshop: 1. What is peace
to me, the family, the school/
workplace and the bigger
community; and 2.What is
unpeace?
Peace to Me meant among
others: simplicity, faithfulness,
contentment, responsibility,
integrity, wholeness. Peace
in the Family indicates trust,
openness, love, teamwork,
generosity, respect, acceptance,
equality, concern, forgiveness.
Peace in the school/
workplace signifies discipline,
sound structures, respect,
commitment, teamwork,
belongingness, solidarity.
Peace in the community
means unity in diversity,
concern, collaboration,
caring for the less. UNPEACE
denotes: living in fear, hatred,
lack of trust, individuality,
not contented, self-centered,
inordinate attachments, no
full grasp of truth, insecurity,

that all efforts for peace starts

he Federation of Asian Bishops Conferences (FABC) held its Eleventh
Plenary Assembly in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on 28 November 4 December
2016. Held every four years, the FABC plenary assemblies have been
a way of bringing together bishop-participants and co-workers from all over
Asia. In the Sri Lanka assembly, there were 137 participants, including 11
cardinals, 22 archbishops, 53 bishops, 31 priests, 2 religious, and 18 lay
persons.
The cardinals included: Cardinal TelesphoreToppo of Ranchi (Papal
Envoy to the assembly); Cardinal Oswald Gracias of Mumbai (president of
FABC); host Cardinal Albert Malcolm Ranjith of Colombo; some of the newly-
appointed cardinals in Asia, Cardinal Patrick DRosario, CSC, of Dhaka and
Cardinal emeritus Anthony Soter Fernandez of Kuala Lumpur; and Cardinal
John Ribat, MSC, of Port Moresby (fraternal delegate to the assembly).
I. Origins and Organization
FABC traces its beginnings to the visit of Pope Paul VI to Manila in 1970.
It also goes back to the friendships forged among Asian bishops meeting for
the first time at the Second Vatican Council (1962-65). FABC is composed
of 19 member episcopal conferences in South, Southeast, East and Central
Asia. The countries represented are: Bangladesh, India (with its Latin, Syro-
Malabar, and Syro-Malankara rites), Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Korea,
Laos-Cambodia, Malaysia-Singapore-Brunei, Myanmar, Pakistan, Philippines,
Sri Lanka, Taiwan R.O.C., Thailand, Timor Leste, and Vietnam. It also includes
eight associate members such as HongKong, Macau, Mongolia, Nepal and four
former Soviet republics in Southwest Asia. Notably absent in FABC is China.
The Philippine delegation included: Cardinals Luis Antonio Tagle
and Orlando Quevedo, OMI (who drafted the message of the assembly);
Archbishops Romulo Valles, Jose Advincula and Jose Palma; Bishops Emmanuel
Cabajar, Gilbert Garcera, Guillermo Afable, and Pablo Virgilio David.
The FABC Central Secretariat is assisted by the nine FABC Offices of:
Human Development, Social Communication, Laity and Family, Theological
Concerns, Education and Faith Formation, Ecumenical and Consecrated Life.
Under the Central Secretariat headed by Fr. Ray OToole, is the newly-created
Climate Change Desk and the Documentation Centre.

present in the assembly were: Cardinal Tagle (chair, Theological Concerns);
Bishop Broderick Pabillo (chair, Evangelization); Bishop Mylo Hubert Vergara
(chair, Clergy, with Fr. Philip Lazatin, SDB, exec. sec.); Archbishop Antonio
Ledesma, SJ (chair, Consecrated Life with Sr. Deanna Combong, RA, exec.
sec.); Bishop Joel Baylon (member, Laity and Family); Bishop Gilbert Garcera
(Pastoral Leadership Program); Fr. William Larousse, MM (exec. sec.,
Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs), and Fr. Roderick Salazar, SVD (exec.
sec., Education and Faith Formation). Working with the Central Secretariat
were: Frs. Enrico Ayo and James Kroeger, MM, and Mr. PablitoBaybado, Jr.
II. Context and Challenges
The extensive message of the assembly focused on The Catholic Family
in Asia: Domestic Church of the Poor on a Mission of Mercy. The assembly
sessions included country reports, group discussions and general comments
on the draft statement. It first described the pastoral context of Asia:
Catholics are small minorities in most countries of Asia. (The 15
dioceses in Japan constitute only 0.3% of the population; the Church
engages in interreligious dialogue with 99.9% of the population. The
Church in Mongolia is called a baby church at 24 years of age; it
celebrated the ordination of its first native priest last August 2016.
Only the Philippines and East Timor have predominantly Catholic
populations.)
Asian families still keep close intergenerational kinship ties and
manifest a culture of caring. (Cardinal Toppo remarked that his tribal
communities in Ranchi are natural Christians in their practice of
sharing.)
The sacredness of marriage and the family is preserved. (In Indonesia,
the sacrament of marriage is upheld by many couples who also strive
to adopt a culture of integral life. Family life in Vietnam has provided
the best environment for preserving the Faith vis a vis a communist
regime.)
On the other hand, Catholic families face many challenges:
persecutions and discrimination (The Church in Pakistan is beset by

present government, India is experiencing a movement towards the
creation of a Hindu state. Several missionaries working among the
tribal communities have been violently attacked. Freedom of religion
in Nepal is also being threatened with the move towards a Hindu

With its 20,000 Catholics, the church in Cambodia shares the countrys
efforts at reconstruction after the many years of war; 40% of its
population are below the poverty line. The Philippines is currently
waging a war against drugs, but mostly targeting the poor.)
political, ideological and cultural conflicts (Myanmar has been
undergoing 60 years of internal conflict. The Church in Sri Lanka is
still working for reconciliation after a bitter period of war that also
affected Catholic families from both sides of the conflict.)
climate change (Myanmar, Bangladesh, and the Philippines have all
experienced recent calamities due to extreme weather disturbances.)
tensions within the family (Family crises in South Korea are not
uncommon, compounded by youth unemployment and economic
polarization. Sri Lanka also contends with the situation of arranged
marriages.)
Erosion of religious and spiritual values (The Church in Taiwan
confronts the LGBT issue and the legalization of arranged marriages.
Singapore is also coping with new ways of reaching out to its young
population.)
Despite these various challenges, the testimonies of three Sri Lankan
Catholic couples with their families also attested to the vitality of the Christian
faith within this secularized and oftentimes turbulent milieu.
III. Vision and Pastoral Imperatives
Judging this complex situation in the light of Faith, the FABC message
stressed that the Catholic family in itself ad intra should be viewed as a
Eucharistic family, a sanctuary of love and life, a domestic Church of the
Poor, a family of missionary disciples, and a seed-bed of vocation. For
others, ad extra, the Catholic family is called to be a family-in-mission sharing
the mercy and compassion of Jesus. The Catholic family, continues the
message, has to become an icon of Gods love for the suffering and the
needy, misera et Misericordia.
Among the pastoral imperatives pointed out are:
countering religious extremism and violence through solidarity with
victims and defending the rights of the poor;
helping migrant workers and refugees through conscientization and
collaboration at departures and arrivals;
responding to cultural conflicts by reducing biases;
countering ideological colonialism regarding reproductive health by
systematically promoting responsible parenthood and natural family
planning; and
answering the challenge of climate change by means of greater
awareness and adopting simple ways of mitigation.
The Plenary Assembly listed several recommendations to episcopal
conferences and local churches:
regard the family as the focal point of pastoral programs;
establish a family ministry towards a culture of integral life;
include formation of conscience as a special concern;
the youth ministry is of critical importance;
form the pastoral agents of the family; and
engage in collaborative efforts.
The conclusion, entitled Spirituality of Communion for the Family,
touched on various dimensions such as: communion with the triune God;
communion in the family and mutual shepherding; prayer for building
communion with God and in the family; Eucharistic spirituality of communion;
and family-in-mission of mercy, sent by the Holy Spirit. The message ended
with a consecration of the Catholic families of Asia to the Holy Family of
Nazareth.
The FABC Plenary Assembly ended with a closing Mass at the Catholic
Cathedral in Colombo, attended by representatives of the Catholic faithful
from all the dioceses of Sri Lanka.

ministry workers.
The day started with a Eucharistic
celebration presided by Archbishop
Antonio J. Ledesma, SJ,DD, He talked
about the Federation of Asian Bishops
Conference in Asia (FABC) held in Sri
Lanka on November 2016. He said that
the family is a domestic Church who
spread the mercy of God, and the Holy
Family in Nazareth is the model for every
family. He pointed out that there are
many challenges that beset the family

Director. The participants enjoyed
the parlor games, dance and carol
presentations. At the end of the program,
Archbishop Ledesma distributed simple
tokens for the volunteers.

House of Hope Celebrates
Our Lady of Guadalupe

The House of Hope Psychiatric
Custodial Care Facility celebrated
the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe
on December 12 in a special way this
year. The House of Hope center is a
non-profit institution and the largest
acute-chronic mental facility in
Northern Mindanao. It is owned by
the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro
City under the ad-extra ministry and
is located at Upper Palalan, Lumbia,
Cagayan de Oro City.
The celebration started
with the Eucharist at 8:30 in the
morning in the centers chapel. It
was a wonderful day for all those
present, especially for the mentally
ill patients, who received graces
through Our Lady of Guadalupe.

The fellowship began with a
Eucharistic celebration led by the
archbishop assisted by Msgr. Perseus P.
Cabunoc, V.G., SSJV, Fr. Raul Dael, SSJV,
Chairperson of Commission on Clergy,
and with the other priests in attendance.
In his homily, the archbishop shared the
Christmas message of the Holy Father
Pope Francis to families. He highlighted
the importance of giving gratitude to
the family of a priest who has shown
sacrificial love in order to support their
vocation to the priesthood. He gave the
example of the parents of St. Therese
of the Child Jesus, Sts. Louis and Zellie
Martin. Their love influenced their
daughters in their vocation with great
faith, dedication, and commitment to
Jesus Christ. The inspiring words invited
the listeners to ponder how nurturing
and supportive relationships in the
family allow the members to be open to
Gods power.
It was an enjoyable program for
both the clergy and their parents who
took part in the parlor games, like the
electronic bingo, and received the many
gifts and prizes that were distributed.
They also lined up at the photo-booth for
some souvenir shots of the once-a-year
family bonding activity. The gathering
concluded with a song of the clergy
entitled A Perfect Christmas.

The relics of Saints Louis and Zelie
Martin, parents of St. Therese of the
Child Jesus, arrived in the Philippines
on January 2, 2017 in Manila and will be
in the country until February 28, 2017.
Sts. Louis and Zelie are the first couple
ever to be canonized in the history
of the Catholic Church. Archbishop
Socrates B. Villegas, CBCP President,
hailed the visit a unique grace from the
Lord as the country prepares for the
fifth centenary of the First Mass and
First Baptism in the Philippines in the
year 2021.
To share this bountiful blessing
from God, Archbishop Villegas opened
the local visit to everyone in the
country and four dioceses in Mindanao
graciously requested to be part of
this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of
giving homage and viewing the relics.
The Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro
was visited by the relics on January
7-8, 2017. In the morning of January 7,
2017, the organizing team of the Relics
Visit of the Archdiocese of Cagayan de
Oro went to the Immaculate Heart of
Mary Parish, Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon.
Together with the team from Manila,
the relics of Saints Louis and Zelie
Martin were brought to the Our Lady
of the Rosary Parish, Agusan, Cagayan
de Oro City and placed in a decorated
caroza.
There were four designated
visiting sites in the archdiocese in
the official itinerary: At 9:00 AM of
January 7, the relics were brought to
Camp Alagar and it was met festively
by the Camp Alagar Musical Band and
stayed in the St. Ignatius de Loyola
Chapel, Camp Alagar for four hours.
Holy Mass was celebrated, officiated
by Fr. Garry Igot, SSJV, the Ad-Intra
and CFLA Director. In his homily, Father
Garry shared the couples spirituality
from their love story, and the beautiful
accounts of their married life with their
children (A Story of a Family); and how
they were touched by Gods grace ( A
Vocation to Home Making). Indeed,
their lives are worth emulating by all
the married couples. After the Holy
Mass, the people and members of
different Catholic organizations came
to venerate the relics with a contingent
from the Philippine National Police

why Jesus elevated marriage into a

Isidro Labrador Parish, Alegria, Surigao

CFC Singles for Christ (SFC) is one
of the family ministries of Couples for
Christ (CFC). On Sunday, January 29,
2017 176 members of SFCs from six
different sectors of Misamis Oriental
gathered at the covered court of
Kauswagan Barangay Hall for the first
Provincial Assembly for 2017 entitled
Market Christ.
The whole-day-event gathered the
Singles for Christ of Misamis Oriental
to celebrate the victories of last year
and set the tone and direction for the
SFCs this year. The CFC theme this year
is Stand Firm in the Faith, which is
anchored on 1 Cor. 16:13-14 Be on your
guard, stand firm in faith, be courageous,
be strong. Your every act should be done
with love. The assembly kicked off with
a talk by Tito Emil Lapus, a Sector SFC
Couple Coordinator.
The talk centered on some
important points from the verse,
elaborating on what it means to stand
firm in ones faith. This was backed up
by practical examples, bible stories and
personal life stories. What struck the
participants the most in Mr. Lapus talk
was his story about being asked by his
boss to choose between his high paying
job in Japan and his family. The choice
he made, which was according to him
a no brainer, was to leave his job and
return home to the Philippines to be
with his wife who was then pregnant
with their first baby. He reminded
everyone to be on guard always because
the enemies of the Lord do not rest. Tito
Emil was not certain what will happen
when he comes home, but he remained
faithful to God that whatever he asked in
His name, it will be given. The talk ended
with a reflection song entitled You Said,
reminding everyone that whatever we
ask from God He will give in His time, we
just have to have faith. In the afternoon, a
Program Appreciation was conducted for
the first time, in order for the participants
to get to know the programs under their
ministry.
The programs were divided into
three groups, namely: The Evangelization
Programs, The Ministry Support
Programs and Other Programs. Under the
Evangelization Programs are the Family
Evangelizations, Missions, Mission
Volunteer Program and Corporate/BPO.
For the Ministry Support Programs are
the Music Ministry, SFC Communications
and Information System while the Other
Programs are composed of the ANCOP
and CIO (Church Integration Office)
which we adopt from the CFC Programs.
These programs aim to strengthen
and make tangible the SFC vision: Every
single man and woman all over the
world experiencing Christ. The aim is
to market Christ at home in our families,
at the work place with our boss and co-
workers, and other areas of the life of an
SFC. SFCs were encouraged to sign up
under the different programs where they
think they might be able to grow closer
to God and be able to share their time,
talent and treasure.

Jose Seminary. In 1999, he moved
to Mindanao, in Cagayan de Oro and
taught college Sacred Scripture and
Religious Studies at Xavier University.
He also spent most of his time writing
books and commentaries of Sacred
Scriptures.
Last year, Fr. Nil celebrated
his 60th year as a Jesuit religious.
The local Jesuit community and the
Xavier University community gave
him tributes for his long years of
dedicated service to the Church and
the Society as a priest, a teacher and
a writer. This 2017, he would have
celebrated his 50th year as a Jesuit
priest, but his sickness caught up
with him in the early part of the year.
Many things could be said about
Fr. Nil but perhaps four important
things will be most remembered
by his students, readers, friends,
fellow priests and Jesuits. First is
his teaching a clear and exact
presentation of the subject matter and
his grading system approximated
and generous to the favor of his
students. Many students liked him
because he gave high marks and also
because he organized his lessons
very well. Second are his writings,
both the popular and the scholarly
ones. He wrote and published a total
of 56 books. A number of titles are
still with two publishing firms as of
this writing. His popular books (God
