Marvel is slowly but surely killing the X-Men
comics. The confirmation that Scarlet Witch
and Quicksilver are not mutants is another
step in Marvels attack on the X-Men.
That follows the death of Wolverine and
the general down playing of the X-Men
line. New X-Men characters have been
forbidden instead we see new Inhumans
like Ms Marvel.

From a commercial perspective this makes
sense. Comic book revenues are miniscule
compared to the movies. The entire comic
book market in North America grossed
$850M , a bit more than half of what the first
Avengers movie alone grossed.
It comes back to the role of comics to Marvel.
They are support mechanisms for the
movies. They provide new ideas, characters
etc and self supporting promotion to the
big money earner Marvel Studios. Which
means the X-Men are a crippled line for
Marvel.
Disney owns Marvel but Marvel , prior to
the Disney takeover, sold the rights to the
X-Men (and Fantastic Four) to 20th Century
Fox and Fox is making squillions from the
mutants so have no reason to give them
back. Why should Disney promote their
competition ?
Thats very different from Sony with Spider-
Man. Having the rights to only one major
character is a major creative restriction. After
you have told Spidys story what do you do?
The only thing Sony could think of is retell
the story. So Marvel knew it was possible
to get Spider-Man back. They must have
been in talks with Sony for months prior to
the recent deal. During time they had been
going all out developing the Spiderverse.
So now Sony gets access to not only Spider-
Peter but Spider-Miles, Spider-Jessica,
Spider-Silk , Spider-Fluffy the wonder dog
(havent heard about him? Dont worry Im
sure Marvel is working on it) etc.
Contrast that with the X-Men. Thats a
whole army of characters who have their
own stories to tell. As well as the main
X-Men series , Fox can tell the tales of
their individual characters which is why we
have had Wolverine solos and are getting
Deadpool, Gambit etc. Fox have their little
but very profitable Xverse.
Now dont expect the X-Men to disappear
overnight. Their death is more like a
slow strangulation rather than a quick
assassination. The X-Men provide writers
with two very important qualities, they can
have a powered person without a fancy
origin story and the X-Men are outcasts
, people fear them. Marvel needs the
time to develop their X-Men substitute
the Inhumans. They are introducing more
characters and titles and the Inhumans
have been introduced to the MCU through
Agents of SHIELD. The big splash will of
course be the movie in 2018.
QUESTION & ANSWER
So are the X-Men doomed?

Ant-Man will mark the starting point for
Phase 3 of Marvels Cinematic Universe,
releasing roughly two-and-a-half months
after The Avengers: Age of Ultron on what
was originally to be the opening weekend
for Batman vs. Superman. Since having its
release date bumped up from November to
July, many of the details surrounding Ant-
Man have begun falling into place.
Writer/director Edgar Wright was first
attached to the project in 2006, but was
only able to confirm the screenplays
completion about six months ago. In the
time since, both of the films stars have been
cast Paul Rudd as Scott Lang/Ant-Man and
Michael Douglas as Hank Pym/the original
Ant-Man. And while the inclusion of the
Scott Lang character was a big hint, we now
know Ant-Man will focus on Langs theft of
the Ant-Man suit and his transformation into
a hero under Pyms guidance.
As the dust settles and production prepares
to begin, Paul Rudd took the time to talk with
Flicks and the City about snagging the lead
in Ant-Man. Heres what Rudd had to say:
Well, its all just kind of
starting, so its really cool.
Im very excited about
it. I read some comics
and [saw] some [Marvel]
movies and I knew Edgar
Wright for many years. The
whole thing that its actually
happened, that I got the part
is still kind of surreal. Its
still sinking in over these
last several months.
When asked about his Academy Award

winning co-star, Michael Douglas, Rudd
had only praise: Its a thrill, hes amazing!
However, the actor was more coy when
pressed about the possibility of Rashida
Jones joining the cast.

Now, Rudd gave the above statement with
a grin, so perhaps he knows more than
hes letting on. Either that or he just enjoys
feeding our addiction to wild rumors and
speculation.
Jones has been linked with Ant-Man as a

potential female lead for a while. Originally,
it was assumed that this would be for the
role of Janet van Dyne/The Wasp, but with
Rudd playing Lang and the much, much
older Douglas playing Pym, that may not be
the case.
Depending on how closely Wright and
co-screenwriter Joe Cornish have kept to
the original story where Langs theft of
the Ant-Man suit was for the purpose of
freeing the only doctor capable of curing
his daughters illness Jones could be
in consideration for the role of Dr. Erica
Sondheim, a minor (though key) character
in Langs origin who could easily be turned
into a love interest.

In May of last year, an announcement shook
the universethe Marvel movie universe,
anyway. It was revealed that director Edgar
Wright had jumped ship from the Paul Rudd-
starring Ant-Man, the superhero movie he
and co-screenwriter Joe Cornish had been
working on for more than a decade.
It was subsequently reported that Wright
had decided to leave the project after
Marvel presented him with a new script
rewritten without his input. It is true that
there were disagreements about the
direction the script should take, Marvel
Studios chief Kevin Feige tells Entertainment
Weekly in this weeks issue, which features
Ant-Man on the cover. (Read the story in
full here.) But everything was aboveboard.

a list of food items for a 5 Star restaurant would be cleanly
organized and be less fun and more professional.

What did you discover about t ypography
photographing in a store?
Maybe it is just me, but the typography I found in the
grocery store were often bland and lack any interest, so
maybe to help the customer focus more on the product
they are buying. They are more just to guide us, just in case
we need to and thats about it, I believe.

CONCLUSION
What concept are you most interested in from the
module experiences this week?
I am mostly interested from doing more mockups because
they are really cool. I still dont know if I can create it myself
just yet. I find smart objects really hard to create, but I do
enjoy using them to bring my projects and assignent from
flat layer to something with more dimension and umph.
