Anxious Kids, Unhealthy Children… Nearly one in eight youth experience extreme anxiety that
significantly interferes with their relationships, activities and school work. Learn more about this serious
health issue and what youth workers, educators and youth ministers can do to help in the IYI Issue Alert,
“When Kids Worry Too Much: Anxiety Disorders Among Children and Teens.”This would be a good parent
handout! Check it out: www.iyi.org/resources/doc/IYI-Issue-Brief-ANXIETY-May-2010.pdf
A Parent’s Guide to the Teen Brain… The Partnership for a Drug Free America has released “A
Parent’s Guide to the Teen Brain,” a digital, science-based resource that explains adolescent brain
processes and offers tips for communicating and helping teens make good decisions. Using video,
humorous interactive segments, role-playing and advice from experts, parents learn that ongoing brain
development contributes to vexing teen behaviors - impulsiveness, rebellion, high emotions, questionable
judgment and risk-taking. Check it out: http://www.drugfree.org/teenbrain
New Indiana Alcohol Law: ID Everyone… Starting July 1, store owners in Indiana will be required
to check legal photo identification from all alcohol buyers, regardless of how old they appear. The law will
apply to any establishment selling “carry-out” alcohol such as liquor stores, convenience stores, pharmacies
and supermarkets, but not restaurants, bars and other businesses where drinks are consumed on the
premises. A recent police sting found approximately 25% of minors were able to obtain alcohol illegally
from convenience stores and gas stations. It is hoped, with the new policy, a new study would find zero
percent sales to minors. (All Aboard Prevention Express, July 2010)
