General Music

Music Concept/Title of Lesson: Romantic Period Day 4


Grade Level: 4th
Date & Time: 2/7/17 Period 4

Objectives:
1. Students will be able to describe the emotion or feeling of a given piece of music
2. Students will be able to define and describe impressions
3. Students will identify animals described by the impressions given in a piece of music

Materials:
Laptop Tickets
Speakers worksheets
Projector Dry erase markers

Procedure:
1. Take attendance
2. Review: Impressionistic
a. What word does that make you think of? Impressions
b. What are impressions?
3. Watch clip of Fantasia 2000 with the Finale from Carnival of the Animals animated
a. Ask for students to provide an insights they have to the clip, how the piece helped
tell a story with the movements of the characters on screen.
i. If necessary to drive home point of the music tells the story, mute the video
and have them answer if it feels complete without the music
4. Modern Movie Connection
a. Movies today use the same concepts as this time period. Impressionistic in style.
b. What word that youve heard before do you hear in that? Impression.
c. What is an impression again?
5. Watch Jurassic Park Scene without Music
a. What did you notice?
6. Listen to the music from this scene without the movie
a. What does this music sound like to you?
b. How would you describe it?
7. Watch the scene with the music
a. How does this scene feel now that weve added music to it?
b. What are some words you would use to describe the scene now?
8. If time: Watch scene from Pirates of the Caribbean with different music
a. How does each piece of music impact the mood and emotion of what you are
seeing?
Assessment:
Teacher will ask students to describe the way a given piece of music sounds using only one or two
descriptive words at a time
Teacher will ask at the end of class what the major characteristics of Romantic Period Music are
