Silver Experiment Full Lab Report Guide

In CHEM121 you learned about each individual component of a lab report and how each
element independently has a function in a scholarly article. Now you will have the
opportunity to bring every independent element together in a full lab report. Each
component should be fully consistent with the expectations described in CHEM121, but
now each component can also draw off the others to create a thorough document that
mimics all the elements of a real scholarly article.

A major theme in both CHEM102 and CHEM122 this quarter is the

connection between molecular shape and size and material
properties.

Learning Objectives:
Identify relevant background information as it relates to the experiment, and
describe the context of the results that will be acquired
Analyze the data acquired in lab, and present it using figures that the reader can
interpret easily (including clear figure captions)
Describe the results from the figures in your own words using clear, concise
language
Use the results articulated in the data analysis section within the context of the field
of nanotechnology (learned about in CHEM102) to draw conclusions about the real-
world meaning of your lab results
Review another lab report and identify strong and weak components
Articulate your review with valuable comments
Component Number of Points Date Due
Introduction and 10 Start of lab period
Background
Peer Review #1 5 Friday (2/10)
Draft 1 0 (points deducted from peer Friday 2/24
review grade if not submitted)
Peer Review #2 5 Friday 3/3
Final Report 40 Friday 3/7
Total Points 60

Sections of your Lab Report

As you may recall from CHEM121, a good scholarly article has several necessary sections.
These include (but are not limited to):
Introduction and Background
Methods and Procedure
Results and Discussion (Data Analysis)
Conclusion
You will be required to include each of these sections. Please see the individual guides to
help you complete each section, and label each with a specific heading in your document.
Later this quarter, in CHEM102, you will learn about the booming field of nanotechnology
and will be able to explain the results of your experiment
Introduction and Background
This experiment deals with looking at silver in different forms (large and small!) Use the
introduction and background to explore what is known about metals in different forms.
Use the general guidelines provided to write a thorough background on nanotechnology as
it applies to your experiment. There are many connections that can be made to greater
technological advances, and its up to you what connections you want to make! There is no
right answer here. See separate instructions for formal introduction assignment.
You will need to cite your sources using the ACS format. Instructions about how to cite in
ACS can be found here:

Please avoid citing:

Personal webpages. They are not subject to peer review.
Wikipedia (or other "wikis"). They are editable by anyone and have no formal review
system.
Websites for commercial products, services, or companies.
This section will be due before your lab period and is the only section being evaluated
independently. Make sure you do a good job!
Peer Review
In order to ensure the highest quality work and get you fully acquainted with the
evaluation criteria for this lab report, you will be undergoing peer review with members
from your learning group. You will be randomly assigned an assignment to peer review
through Canvas.
Peer Review #1: Introduction and Background
You will use the rubrics provided for an introduction and background section and give a
tentative grade along with comments to justify your grade. The comments can be in the
form of Microsoft Word comments or a separate section for comments at the end.
Response to Peer Review:
In response to your partners comments, you will need to implement changes on your
introduction and background section and write a short paragraph/list describing what
changes you implemented and how. You can do this using Microsoft Word comments or
write a separate section that explains what changes you made.
Peer Review #2:
For your second peer review assignment, you will be randomly assigned an entire lab
report. The first draft of your report is due on Friday, February 24th, and you will have the
week to complete the peer review for your partner. You will use the same rubric that your
TA will use to grade your lab report. You will be expected to comment on the changes that
you make as a result of your partners review in a short paragraph at the end.
