Recital Procedural Guidelines

Lecture Recital Research Proposal Procedures


Pass Qualifying or Comprehensive Examinations. (Students are eligible when
nine or fewer credits of coursework are remaining.)
Register for Lecture Recital Document CONR 899 (1 or 2 credits).
Select document advisor in consultation with the Associate Dean for
Graduate Studies.
ConLirm research topic with document advisor.
Select and agree upon style manual: Chicago, Turabian, etc.
Select and conLirm Graduate Faculty Committee (GFC).
Draft, write, and revise Lecture Recital Research Proposal in consultation
with Lecture Recital Document (LRD) advisor.
Lecture Recital Research Proposal (LRRP) elements:
o Title Page
o Table of Contents
o Abstract
o Introduction
o Literature Review
o Methods
o Document Design
o Lecture Recital Design
o Draft Institutional Review Board (IRB) application, if appropriate*
(see below)
o Bibliography
Lecture Recital Research Proposal nuts and bolts:
o Use 12 point font, Times New Roman font with standard margins.
o Double space all text.
o Do not exceed 15 pages of text. Bibliography not included in 15 pages.
o Number pages in lower right hand corner beginning with the abstract.
o Grammar, syntax, and spelling must be free of error.
o Musical examples must be reproduced in high quality scans.
Schedule Lecture Recital Research Proposal defense within the following
dates:
o Fall 2016 Semester: September 15 and November 1
o Spring 2017 Semester: February 1 and April 1
Reserve RUE 145 through the Conservatory OfLice.
Deliver Lecture Recital Research Proposal to Graduate Faculty Committee
fourteen days prior to scheduled proposal defense date.
o Provide LRRP in print or electronic format at the preference of
individual GFC members.

Lecture Recital Proposal Defense


Arrive early, and dress for success. The Conservatory OfLice will provide a
key to RUE 145.
The candidate opens the Lecture Recital Research Proposal defense with a
brief description of the project.
The candidate will respond to GFC questions and concerns, as appropriate.
Following a short LRRP summary, the document advisor will facilitate
discussion and questions among the GFC.
The candidate should make note of concerns, questions, and
recommendations.
Upon GFC approval, all committee members will sign LRD Approval Form.
LRD Approval Form is Liled the Conservatory OfLice. Deliver to Conservatory
Graduate Records and Registration Administrative Assistant.
When the LRRP has been approved, the candidate may begin conducting the
research. See note regarding IRB* procedures.

*Upon proposal approval, doctoral candidates must initiate Institutional Review


Board (IRB) application and receive approval from IRB committee, if appropriate.
Any research project that involves collecting data from humans requires IRB
approval. Personal interviews with living composers, performers, authors, and other
living individuals require Shenandoah University IRB approval.

Lecture Recital Document and Recital


DMA candidates may register for two credits of Lecture Recital Document CONR 899
and Lecture Recital MUPP 898 in the semester that he/she intends to graduate.
Approval of the LRRP is a pre-requisite for the completion of a Linal Lecture Recital
Document (LRD) and required Lecture Recital. In the event that a candidate is
unable to produce an acceptable LRRP, the candidate will be advised to withdraw
from Lecture Recital MUPP 898 to avoid receiving a failing grade in the course.

Beginning of Semester Procedures


Register for Lecture Recital Document CONR 899 (1 or 2 credits).
Register for Lecture Recital MUPP 698 (2 credits).
ConLirm committee availability for Lecture Recital date.
Schedule performance venue using Recital Request Form.
Recital Request Form
Schedule RUE 145 for LRD defense through the Conservatory OfLice.
Final days to present and defend are:
o Fall 2016 Semester: November 22
o Spring 2017 Semester: April 28
ConLirm LRD defense format with document advisor. The LRD defense may
be scheduled in one of two ways:

1. Immediately following the Lecture Recital, or


2. Seven days prior to the scheduled Lecture Recital.
Determine dates for LRD submission to GFC according to selected format of
LRD defense.

Conducting Research and Writing the LRD


Develop topic and conduct research in consultation with LRD advisor.
Draft, revise, and complete LRD.
o Doctoral candidates should consider hiring professional editors to
assist with proper academic writing.

o LRDs vary in length with the expectation of complete coverage of the


subject matter. The minimum acceptable length is 30 pages (6,250
words) and no more than 100 pages of text. Bibliography and
Appendices are not included in this count.

Lecture Recital
Recommended length: 60 minutes
o 35 - 40 minutes lecture
o 20 - 25 minutes performance
Lecture:
o Transform and translate LRD into a live lecture-recital.
o Select and perform musical examples that best illustrate and support
your research Lindings.
o Provide appropriate context for your research and performance.
o Prepare program notes, if appropriate.
Repertoire:
o Prepare and reLine selected repertoire relevant to LRD topic.
o Submit program information as per Conservatory Recital Program
procedures.

Lecture Recital Defense


The LRD defense may be scheduled in one of two ways:
1. Immediately following the Lecture Recital, or
2. Seven days prior to the scheduled Lecture Recital.
Deliver Lecture Recital Document (LRD) to Graduate Faculty Committee
fourteen days prior to scheduled defense date.
o Provide LRD in print or electronic format at the preference of
individual GFC members.
The candidate opens the Lecture Recital Document defense with a brief
summary of the study, Lindings, and signiLicance.
Following a short LRD summary, the document advisor will facilitate
discussion and questions among the GFC.
The candidate will respond to GFC questions, suggested revisions, and
recommendations.
Upon GFC approval, all committee members will sign Warrant Page.
Complete all LRD revisions.
Upon Linal completion of LRD revisions, the document advisor will grant Linal
approval and sign Warrant Page.
Submit Linal version to document advisor for approval (by last day of
semester classes)
o Fall 2016 Semester: December 6
o Spring 2017 Semester: May 9
The signed Warrant Page is scanned for inclusion in electronic copies
submitted to Smith Library and the Conservatory OfLice.

Submit Linal approved Lecture Recital Document with signed Warrant Page
to Smith Library (see attached Smith Library Guidelines) and the
Conservatory OfLice.

Final Completion Proceduresgateway to graduation!


Submit electronic copies including Lecture Recital Document and Warrant
page to Smith Library and Conservatory OfLice. (See Document Submission
Guidelines in Conservatory Graduate Students Blackboard Organization.)
Participate in Conservatory Recognition and Honors Ceremony and receive
your doctoral hood and well-deserved recognition.
