The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a test that measures the language proficiency of
people who want to study or work in environments where English is used as a language of communication.
It is a main requirement in Canada Express Entry immigration system and it is also one of the scoring factors in
Quebec Skilled Migrants/Permanent workers program.
1- General:
IELTS General Training focuses on basic survival skills in broad social and workplace contexts. It is
typically for those who are going to English-speaking countries to do secondary education, work
experience or training programs. People migrating to Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK must
take the General Training test.
2- Academic:
IELTS Academic is for people planning to study in higher education or seeking professional registration.
It assesses whether you are ready to begin studying or training in an environment where English is the
language used.
Note:
The differences in test format between the IELTS General and the IELTS Academic is only the Reading and
Writing sections also the scoring system is different.

How to register for the exam (In Egypt)
Option 1:
You can register online for the exam using one of the previously mentioned portals. However, based on my
experience as well as my friends I wouldnt recommend this method because the timetable of the exam is
usually not updated with the latest exam availability and they may automatically re-schedule your reservation
without sending a note (Happened with a friend and she discovered the same when she went to pay for the
exam).
Option 2:
Go directly to any of the IDP/AUC or British council IELTS centers and pay for the exam and this is the best
and highly recommended approach.
After reserving the exam and nearly 3 days before its schedule you should receive an email with the exact time
for your speaking test as well as the written exam (Listening, Reading, Writing) and the exact location also for
both.
- Your original Passport (If you fail to bring the same PASSPORT / I.D indicated in your application form, you will NOT
be able to sit for the test and you will not be reimbursed the test fee. Copy of Passport/I.D will not be accepted.)
No candidate will be allowed into the test room after 8:30am; if you arrive late, you will neither attend the test nor
be refunded your test fee.
Please do not bring valuables to the test venue. You will not be allowed to take into the test room any items except
your ID and pencil/eraser. Your bag and mobile phone will be stored at a separate room.

Note:
- PLEASE read carefully the email and keep in mind that the location of the speaking test may differ from
that of the written one.
- Listening, Reading and Writing must be completed on the same day, with no breaks in between them.
The order in which these tests are taken may vary but the common order is usually; Listening, Reading
then Writing.
- The Speaking test will either be after a break on the same day as the other three tests, or up to a week
before or after the other tests. This will depend on your test centre.
1- Listening:
You can write down your answers in the question booklet and then transfer them to the answer sheet in
the last 10 min. given at the end of the listening part.
- While practicing you need to use the answer sheet to get used to it because you may shift the answers
skipping any of the questions. So you need to practice not to do so.
- We assume that you have practiced a lot before the exam and you dont need to hear the introduction of
each section of the listening part which describes how many questions are there and instructions to solve,
etc
Please use this time to read the questions/dialogs, defining important keywords and anticipating what the
speaker will say.
- Spelling and Grammar matters, so please take care.
- If you do not know the answer to a question, attempt it (guess) but do not waste time; move quickly onto
the next one.
