newspapermencameawayfromhisHotelNewYorkerbirthdaypartyyesterday,whichlastedsixhours,
feelinghesitantlythatsomethingwaswrongeitherwiththeoldman'smindorelsewiththeirown,forDr.
Tesla,sereneinanoldfashionedPrinceAlbertandcourtlyinawaythatseemstohavegoneoutofthis
world,announcedthat:
1.Hehaddiscoveredthesocalledcosmicrayin1896,atleastfiveyearsbeforeanyotherscientisttookit
upandtwentyyearsbeforeitbecamepopularamongscientists,andheisnowconvincedthatmanyofthe
cosmicparticlestravelfiftytimesfasterthanlight,someofthem500timesfaster.
NeedsNoCommutator
2.Hehasfoundawaytoproduceadirectelectriccurrentbyinductionandwithouttheuseofa
commutator,whichissomethingtheexpertsinelectricityhaveconsideredimpossibleforthepast
hundredyears.
3.Hehasinventedan"absolutelyimpossible"machinewhichwillimpartvibrationstotheearthwhich,
withproperreceivingapparatuscanbepickedupanywhereontheearth'ssurface,andthatthis
mysteriousmachinewillallowscientiststoexplorethedeepinterioroftheearth,willenablepractical
geologiststodiscovergold,coalandpetroleum,andatthesametimewillgiveshipsthemeansof
navigatingwithoutcompassorsextant.
Dr.Teslahas600to700patentstohisname.Heinventedtherotaryfieldmotor,andisadmittedlythe
seerandfatherofallmodernelectricaldevelopment.Ashasbeenhiscustomforfiveyearsnow,he
arrangedhisownbirthdayparty,drankonlyhotmilkashispartofthecelebration,andmadehis
announcementswiththesuperbcertaintyofamanwhoknewwhathewastalkingabout,evenifnoneof
hisguestsdid.
Tellsof"Quake"
Hesaid,amongotherthings,thatheexpectstohave$100,000,000withintwoyears,andherevealedthat
anearthquakewhichdrewpoliceandambulancestotheregionofhislaboratoryat48E.HoustonSt.in
188.7or1888wastheresultofalittlemachinehewasexperimentingwithatthattimewhich"youcould
putinyourovercoatpocket."
Thebewilderednewspapermenpounceduponthisasatleastonethingtheycouldunderstandand"the
fatherofmodernelectricity"toldwhathadhappenedasfollows:
"Iwasexperimentingwithvibrations.IhadoneofmymachinesgoingandIwantedtoseeifIcouldgetit
intunewiththevibrationofthebuilding.Iputitupnotchafternotch.Therewasapeculiarcracking
sound.
"Iaskedmyassistantswheredidthesoundcomefrom.Theydidnotknow.Iputthemachineupafew
morenotches.Therewasaloudercrackingsound.IknewIwasapproachingthevibrationofthesteel
building.Ipushedthemachinealittlehigher.
"Suddenlyalltheheavymachineryintheplacewasflyingaround.Igrabbedahammerandbrokethe
machine.Thebuildingwouldhavebeendownaboutourearsinanotherfewminutes.Outsideinthestreet

SomeshrewdreporteraskedDr.TeslaatthispointwhathewouldneedtodestroytheEmpireState
Buildingandthedoctorreplied:"Fivepoundsofairpressure.IfIattachedtheproperoscillating
machineonagirderthatisalltheforceIwouldneed,fivepounds.Vibrationwilldoanything.Itwould
onlybenecessarytostepupthevibrationsofthemachinetofitthenaturalvibrationofthebuildingand
thebuildingwouldcomecrashingdown.That'swhysoldiersalwaysbreakstepcrossingabridge."
Hisearlyexperimentsinvibration,heexplained,ledtohisinventionofhis"earthvibrating"machine.
Tallandthinandasceticface,hiseyessunkenbuthumorousunderprotrudingbrows,hewascagey
aboutdescribingwhathisnewmachineis,althoughhebelievesitwillbe"thechiefthingofmymany
inventionsposteritywillthankmefor."

...Hisexperimentsintransmittingmechanicalvibrationsthroughtheearthcalledbyhimtheartof
telegeodynamicswereroughlydescribedbythescientistasasortof"controlledearthquake."
Therhythmicalvibrationspassthroughtheearthwithalmostnolossofenergy,hesaid,andpredictedthe
systemintimewillbeuniversallyadopted,sinceitfurnishesan"unfailingmeansofcommunication."He
asserted:
"Itbecomespossibletoconveymechanicaleffectstothegreatestterrestrialdistancesandproduceall
kindsofuniqueeffectsofinestimablevaluetoscience,industryandthearts."...

HisGreatestAchievement
...Oneofthesubjects,whichhehoped,hesaid,willcometoberecognizedashis"greatestachievement
inthefieldofengineering,"was,hesaid,theperfectionbyhimof"anapparatusbywhichmechanical
energycanbetransmittedtoanypartoftheterrestrialglobe."
Thisapparatus,hesaid,willhaveatleastfourpracticalpossibilities.Itwillgivetheworldanewmeansof
unfailingcommunicationitwillprovideanewandbyfarthesafestmeansforguidingshipsatseaand
intoportitwillfurnishacertaindiviningrodforlocatingoredepositsofanykindunderthesurfaceof
theearthandfinally,itwillfurnishscientistswithameansforlayingbarethephysicalconditionsofthe
earth,andwillenablethemtodeterminealloftheearth'sphysicalconstants.
Hecalledthisdiscovery"telegeodynamics,"motionofearthforcesatadistance.Itisofthis,hesaid,that
itwould"appearalmostpreposterous."Theapparatus,headded,is"ideallysimple,"consistingofa
stationarypartandacylinderoffinesteel"floating"inair.
Hehasfoundmeans,hesaid,of"impressinguponthefloatingpartpowerfulimpulseswhichreactonthe
stationarypart,andthroughthelattertotransmitenergythroughtheearth."Todothishehas"founda
newamplifierforaknowntypeofenergy,"andthe"purposeistoproduceimpulsesthroughtheearthand
thenpickthemupwheneverneeded."

Inordertoconveyaclearideaofthesignificanceandrevolutionarycharacterofthisdiscoveryitis
indispensabletomakeabriefstatementregardingELECTRICALTHERAPY.
Fiftyyearsago,whileinvestigatinghighfrequencycurrentsdevelopedbymeatthattime,Iobservedthat
theyproducedcertainphysiologicaleffectsofferingnewandgreatpossibilitiesinmedicaltreatment.My
firstannouncementspreadlikefireandexperimentswereundertakenbyahostofexpertshereandin
othercountries.WhenafamousFrenchphysician,Dr.D'Arsonval,declaredthathehadmadethesame
discovery,aheatedcontroversyrelativetoprioritywasstarted.TheFrench,eagertohonortheir
countryman,madehimamemberoftheAcademy,ignoringentirelymyearlierpublication.Resolvedto
takestepsforvindicatingmyclaim,IwenttoParis,whereImetDr.D'Arsonval.Hispersonalcharm
disarmedmecompletelyandIabandonedmyintention,contenttorestontherecord.Itshowsthatmy
disclosureantedatedhisandalsothatheusedmyapparatusinhisdemonstrations.Thefinaljudgmentis
lefttoposterity.
Sincethebeginning,thegrowthofthenewartandindustryhasbeenphenomenal,somemanufacturers
turningoutdailyhundredsofsets.Manymillionsarenowinusethroughouttheworld.Thecurrents
furnishedbythemhaveprovedanidealtonicforthehumannervesystem.Theypromoteheartactionand
digestion,inducehealthfulsleep,ridtheskinofdestructiveexudationsandcurecoldsandfeverbythe
warmththeycreate.Theyvivifyatrophiedorparalyzedpartsofthebody,allayallkindsofsufferingand
saveannuallythousandsoflives.LeadersintheprofessionhaveassuredmethatIhavedonemorefor
humanitybythismedicaltreatmentthanbyallmyotherdiscoveriesandinventions.Bethatasitmay,I
feelcertainthattheMECHANICALTHERAPY,whichIamabouttogivetotheworld,willbeof
incomparablygreaterbenefit.Itsdiscoverywasmadeaccidentallyunderthefollowingcircumstances.
Ihadinstalledatthelaboratory,35SouthFifthAvenue,oneofmymechanicaloscillatorswiththeobject
ofusingitintheexactdeterminationofvariousphysicalconstants.Themachinewasboltedinvertical
positiontoaplatformsupportedonelasticcushionsand,whenoperatedbycompressedair,performed
minuteoscillationsabsoluteyisochronous,thatistosay,consumingrigorouslyequalintervalsoftime.So
perfectwasitsfunctioninginthisrespectthatclocksdrivenbyitindicatedthehourwithastronomical
precision.Oneday,asIwasmakingsomeobservations,Isteppedontheplatformandthevibrations
impartedtoitbythemachineweretransmittedtomybody.Thesensationexperiencedwasasstrangeas
agreeable,andIaskedmyassistantstotry.Theydidsoandweremystifiedandpleasedlikemyself.Buta
fewminuteslatersomeofus,whohadstayedlongerontheplatform,feltanunspeakableandpressing
necessitywhichhadtobepromptlysatisfied,andthenastupendoustruthdawneduponme.
Evidently,theseisochronousrapidoscillationsstimulatedpowerfullytheperistalticmovementswhich
propelthefoodstuffsthroughthealimentarychannels.Ameanswasthusprovidedwherebytheir
contentscanbeperfectlyregulatedandcontrolledatwill,andwithouttheuseofdrugs,specificremedies
orinternalapplicationswhatever.
WhenIbegantopracticewithmyassistantsMECHANICALTHERAPYweusedtofinishourmeals
quicklyandrushbacktothelaboratory.Wesufferedfromdyspepsiaandvariousstomachtroubles,
biliousness,constipation,flatulenceandotherdisturbances,allnaturalresultsofsuchirregularhabit.But
afteronlyaweekofapplication,duringwhichIimprovedthetechniqueandmyassistantslearnedhowto
takethetreatmenttotheirbestadvantage,allthoseformsofsicknessdisappearedasbyenchantmentand
fornearlyfouryears,whilethemachinewasinuse,wewereallinexcellenthealth.Icuredanumberof
peopleamongthemmygreatfriendMarkTwainwhosebookssavedmylife.Hecametothelaboratory
intheworstshapesufferingfromavarietyofdistressinganddangerousailmentsbutinlessthantwo
monthsheregainedhisoldvigorandabilityofenjoyinglifetothefullestextent.Shortlyafter,agreat
calamitybefellme:mylaboratorywasdestroyedbyfire.Nothingwasinsuredandthelossofpriceless

apparatusandrecordsgavemeaterrificshockfromwhichIdidnotrecoverforseveralyears.The
enforceddiscontinuanceofMECHANICALTHERAPYalsocausedmedeepregret.Ihadevolveda
wonderfulremedyforillsofinestimablevaluetomankindandinventedapparatusofferingunbounded
commercialpossibilitiesbutwhenIcametoconsiderpracticalintroductionIrealizedthatitwasentirely
unsuitable.Itwasbig,heavyandnoisy,calledforacontinuoussupplyofoil,partofwhichwas
dischargedintheroomasfinesprayitconsumedconsiderablepowerandrequiredanumberof
objectionableaccessories.DuringthesucceedingyearsImadegreatimprovementsandfinallyevolveda
designwhichleavesnothingtobedesired.Themachinewillbeverysmallandlight,operatenoiselessly
withoutanylubricant,consumeatriflingamountofenergyandwillbe,tomyknowledge,themost
beautifuldeviceeverputonthemarket.Theintentionistoexhibititinactionattheoccasionofmy
annualreceptioninhonorofthePresswhichhasbeen,unfortunately,delayedthisyear,andIanticipate
thatitwillelicitgreatinterestandreceivewidepublicity.UnlessIamgrosslymistakenitwillbe
introducedveryextensivelyand,eventually,therewillbeoneineveryhousehold.
ThepracticalapplicationofMECHANICALTHERAPYthroughmyoscillatorswillprofoundlyaffect
humanlife.Byinsuringperfectregularityofevacuationsthebodywillfunctionbetterineveryrespect
andlifewillbecomeeversomuchsaferandmoreenjoyable.Oneofthemostimportantresultswillbethe
greatreductionamountingpossiblytoseventyfivepercentinthenumberofheartfailures,which
aremostlycausedbysomeacuteupsetofthedigestiveprocessandnormaloperationofthestomach.
Anothervitalimprovementwillbederivedfromthequickenedremovaloftoxicexcretionsoforgans
affectedbydisesse.Itisreasonabletoexpectthatthroughthisandotherhealthfulactionsulcersand
similarinternallesionsorabsesseswillbecuredandreliefmightbeobtainedevenincaseofacanceror
othermalignantgrowth.Skilledphysiciansandsurgeonswillbeabletoperformveritablemiracleswith
suchoscillations.Theystimulatestronglytheliver,spleen,kidneys,bladderandotherorgansandbythese
desirableactionstheymustcontributenotalittletowellbeing.Personssufferingfromanemiaofany
formwillbeespeciallyhelpedbythetreatment.Butthegreatestbenefitwillbederivedfromitbywomen
whowillbeabletoreducewithouttheusualtantalizingabstinence,privation,sacrificeoftimeandmoney
andtorturetheyhavetoendure.Theywillimprovemuchinappearance,acquirecleareyesand
complexionsanditmaybesafelypredictedthatlongcontinuedtreatmentwillbringforthfemininebeauty
neverseenbefore.Itisnottobeforgottenthattheeliminationofcountlessdrugs,patentmedicinesand
specificremediesofallkindstakeninternally,bywhichmillionsofpeopledoomthemselvestoanearly

InTesla'soscillatorgenerator,aResonanceeffectcanbeobserved.Sinceresonanceseemstobeanever
increasingeffectwiththisoscillatorgenerator,itcanbededucedthattheremustbeagreatsourceof
energyavailablethroughit.
Whycanaresonancebecreatedintheoscillatorgeneratorwhenitcannotinaordinaryreciprocating
engine?Withtheoscillatorgenerator,allgoverningmechanismsareeliminated.Ontheotherhand,
considerthecarengine.Startingwiththecylinder,areciprocatingmotionisconvertedintorotarymotion
byameansofshafts,cranks,gears,drivetrains,transmissions,etc.
Thesepartsallconsumeworkbyfriction,butthegreatestlossoccursinthechangefromreciprocatingto
rotarymotion.Ateachpointeveryvaryinginclinationofthecrankandpistonsworkatadisadvantage
andresultinlossofefficiency.
InTesla'soscillatorgenerator,thepistonisentirelyfreetomoveasthemediumimpelsitwithouthaving
toencounterandovercometheinertiaofamovingsystemandinthisrespectthetwotypesofengines
differradicallyandessentially.
Thistypeofengine,undertheinfluenceofanappliedforcesuchasthetensionofcompressedair,steam,
orothergasesunderpressure,yieldsanoscillationofaconstantperiod.
TheobjectiveoftheTeslaoscillatorgeneratoristoprovideamechanismcapableofconvertingthe
energyofcompressedgasorsteamintomechanicalpower.Sincetheoscillatorgeneratorisdenudedofall

Itisawellknownpriciplethatifaspringpossessingasensibleinertiaisbroughtundertension,i.e.,being
stretched,andthenfreed,itwillperformvibrationswhichareisochronous.Asfarastheperiodingeneral
isconcerned,itwilldependontherigidityofthespring,anditsowninertiaorthatofthesystemofwhich
itmayformanimmediatepart.ThisisknownasSimpleHarmonicMotion.
Thissimpleharmonicmotionintheformofisochronoussoundvibrationscanbeimpresseduponthe
earth,causingthepropagationofcorrespondingrhythmicaldisturbancesthroughthesamewhichpass
throughitsremotestboundarieswithoutattenuationsothatthetransmissionisaffectedwithanefficiency
ofonehundredpercent.

Intheinventionwhichformsthesubjectofmypresentapplication,myobjecthasbeen,primarilyto
provideanengine,whichundertheinfluenceofanappliedforcesuchastheelastictensionofsteamor
gasunderpressurewillyieldanoscillatorymovementwhich,withinverywidelimits,willbeofconstant
period,irrespectiveofvariationsofload,frictionallossesandotherfactorswhichinallordinaryengines
producechangeintherateofreciprocation.
Thefurtherobjectsoftheinventionaretoprovideamechanism,capableofconvertingtheenergyof
steamorgasunderpressureintomechanicalpowermoreeconomicallythantheformsofengine
heretoforeused,chieflybyovercomingthelosseswhichresultinthesebythecombinationwithrotating
partspossessinggreatinertiaofareciprocatingsystemwhichalso,isbetteradaptedforuseathigher
temperaturesandpressures,andwhichiscapableofusefulandpracticalapplicationtogeneralindustrial
purposes,particularlyinsmallunits.

Theinventionisbaseduponcertainwellknownmechanicalprinciplesastatementofwhichwillassistin
abetterunderstandingofthenatureandpurposesoftheobjectssoughtandresultsobtained.Heretofore,
wherethepressureofsteamoranygashasbeenutilizedandappliedfortheproductionofmechanical
motionithasbeencustomarytoconnectwiththereciprocatingormovingpartsoftheengineaflywheel
orsomerotarysystemequivalentinitseffectandpossessingrelativelygreatmechanicalinertia,upon
whichdependencewasmainlyplacedforthemaintenanceofconstantspeed.This,whilesecuringina
measurethisobject,rendersimpossibletheattainmentoftheresultatwhichIhavearrived,andis
attendedbydisadvantageswhichbymyinventionareentirelyobviated.Ontheotherhand,incertain
cases,wherereciprocatingenginesortoolshavebeenusedwithoutarotatingsystemofgreatinertia,no
attempt,sofarasIknow,hasbeenmadetosecureconditionswhichwouldnecessarilyyieldsuchresults
asIhavereached.
Itisawellknownprinciplethatifaspringpossessingasensibleinertiabebroughtundertension,asby
beingstretched,andthenfreeditwillperformvibrationswhichareisochronousand,astoperiod,inthe
maindependentupontherigidityofthespring,anditsowninertiaorthatofthesystemofwhichitmay
formanimmediatepart.Thisisknowntobetrueinallcaseswheretheforcewhichtendstobringthe
springormovablesystemintoagivenpositionisproportionatetothedisplacement.
Incarryingoutmyinventionandforsecuringtheobjectsingeneraltermsstatedabove,Iemploythe
energyofsteamorgasunderpressure,actingthroughpropermechanism,tomaintaininoscillationa
piston,and,takingadvantageofthelawabovestated,Iconnectwithsaidpiston,orcausetoactuponit,a
spring,undersuchconditionsastoautomaticallyregulatetheperiodofthevibration,sothatthealternate
impulsesofthepowerimpelledpiston,andthenaturalvibrationsofthespringshallalwayscorrespondin
directionandcoincideintime.
While,inthepracticeoftheinventionImayemployanykindofspringorelasticbodyofwhichthelaw
orprincipleofoperationabovedefinedholdstrue,Iprefertouseanairspring,orgenerallyspeakinga
confinedbodyorcushionofelasticfluid,asthemechanicaldifficultiesintheuseofmetallicspringsare
serious,owingmainly,tothetendencytobreak.Moreover,insteadofpermittingthepistontoimpinge
directlyuponsuchcushionswithinitsowncylinder,Iprefer,inordertoavoidtheinfluenceofthevarying
pressureofthesteamorgasthatactsuponthepistonandwhichmightdisturbtherelationsnecessaryfor
themaintenanceofisochronousvibration,andalsotobetterutilizetheheatgeneratedbythecompression,
toemployanindependentplunderconnectedwiththemainpiston,andachamberorcylindertherefore,
containingairwhichisnormally,atthesamepressureastheexternalatmosphere,forthusaspringof
practicallyconstantrigidityisobtained,buttheairorgaswithinthecylindermaybemaintainedatany
pressure.
InordertodescribethebestmannerofwhichIamawareinwhichtheinventionisormaybecarriedinto
effect,Irefernowtotheaccompanyingdrawingwhichrepresentsincentralcrosssectionanengine
embodyingmyimprovements.
AisthemaincylinderinwhichworksapistonB.InletportsCCpassthroughthesidesofthecylinder,
openingatthemiddleportionthereofandonoppositesides.ExhaustportsDDextendthroughthewallof
thecylinderandareformedwithbranchesthatopenintotheinteriorofthecylinderoneachsideofthe
inletportsandonoppositesidesofthecylinder.
ThepistonBisformedwithtwocircumferentialgroovesEF,whichcommunicatethroughopeningsGin
thepistonwiththecylinderonoppositesidesofsaidpistonrespectively.
Idonotconsiderasofspecialimportancetheparticularconstructionandarrangementofthecylinder,the
pistonandtheportsforcontrollingit,exceptthatitisdesirablethatalltheports,andmoreespecially,the
exhaustportsshouldbemadeverymuchlargerthanisusuallythecase,sothatnoforceduetotheaction
ofthesteamorcompressedairwilltendtoretardofaffectthereturnofthepistonineitherdirection.
ThepistonBissecuredtoapistonrodH,whichworksinsuitablestuffingboxesintheheadsofthe
cylinderA.ThisrodisprolongedononesideandextendsthroughbearingsVinacylinderIsuitably
mountedorsupportedinlinewiththefirst,andwithinwhichisadiskorplungerJcarriedbytherodH.

cylinderandjacketismadesteamorairtightasbysuitablepacking.ThemainsupplylineLforsteamor
compressedairleadsintothischamber,andthetwopipesthatleadtothecylinderArunfromthesaid
chamber,oilcupsMbeingconvenientlyarrangedtodeliveroilintothesaidpipesforlubricatingthe
piston.
IntheparticularformofengineshownthejacketKwhichcontainsthecylinderIisprovidedwitha
flangeNbywhichitisscrewedtotheendofcylinderA.AsmallchannelOisthusformedwhichhasair
ventsPinitssidesanddrippipesQleadingoutfromitthroughwhichtheoilwhichcollectsinitis
carriedoff.
Toexplainnowtheoperationofthedeviceabovedescribed.Inthepositionofthepartsshown,orwhen
thepistonisatthemiddlepointofitsstroke,theplungerJisatthecenterofthecylinderIandtheairon
bothsidesofthesameisatthenormalpressureoftheoutsideatmosphere.Ifasourceofsteamor
compressedairbethenconnectedtotheinletportsCCofthecylinderAandamovementbeimpartedto
thepistonasbyasuddenblow,thelatteriscausedtoreciprocateinamannerwellunderstood.The
movementofthepistonineitherdirectionceaseswhentheforcetendingtoimpelitandthemomentum
whichithasacquiredarecounterbalancedbytheincreasingpressureofthesteamorcompressedairin
thatendofthecylindertowardwhichitismovingandasinitsmovementthepistonhasshutoffata
givenpoint,thepressurethatimpelleditandestablishedthepressurethattendstoreturnit,itisthen
impelledintheoppositedirection,andthisactioniscontinuedaslongastherequisitepressureisapplied.
ThemovementsofthepistoncompressandrarifytheairinthecylinderIatoppositeendsofthesame
alternately.AforwardstrokecompressestheairaheadoftheplungerJandtendstodriveitforward.This
actionoftheplungerupontheaircontainedintheoppositeendsofthecylinderisexactlythesamein
principleasthoughapistonrodwereconnectedtothemiddlepointofacoiledspring,theendsofwhich
areconnectedtofixedsupports.Consequentlythetwochambersmaybeconsideredasasinglespring.
ThecompressionsoftheairinthecylinderIandtheconsequentlossofenergyduemainlytothe
imperfectelasticityoftheair,giverisetoaveryconsiderableamountofheat.ThisheatIutilizeby
conductingthesteamorcompressedairtotheenginecylinderthroughthechamberformedbythejacket
surroundingtheairspringcylinder.Theheatthustakenupandusedtoraisethetemperatureofthesteam
orairactinguponthepistonisavailedoftoincreasetheefficiencyoftheengine.Inanygivenengineof
thiskindthenormalpressurewillproduceastrokeofdeterminedlength,andthiswillbeincreasedor
diminishedaccordingtotheincreaseofpressureaboveorthereductionofpressurebelowthenormal.
InconstructingtheapparatusIallowforavariationinthelengthofstrokebygivingtotheconfining
cylinderIoftheairspringproperlydetermineddimensions.Thegreaterthepressureuponthepiston,the
higherwillbethedegreeofcompressionoftheairspring,andtheconsequentcounteractingforceupon
theplunger.Therateorperiodofreciprocationofthepiston,however,isnomoredependentuponthe
pressureappliedtodriveit,thanwouldbetheperiodofoscillationofapendulumpermanently
maintainedinvibration,upontheforcewhichperiodicallyimpelsit,theeffectofvariationsinsuchforce
beingmerelytoproducecorrespondingvariationsinthelengthofstrokeoramplitudeofvibration
respectively.Theperiodismainlydeterminedbytherigidityoftheairspringandtheinertiaofthe
movingsystem,andImaythereforesecureanyperiodofoscillationwithinverywidelimitsbyproperly
portioningthesefactors,asbyvaryingthedimensionsoftheairchamberwhichisequivalenttovarying
therigidityofthespring,orbyadjustingtheweightofthemovingparts.Theseconditionsareallreadily
determinable,andanengineconstructedashereindescribedmybemadetofollowtheprincipleof
operationabovestatedandmaintainaperfectlyuniformperiodthroughverymuchwiderlimitsof
pressurethaninordinaryuseitiseverlikelytobesubjectedto,anditmaybesuccessfullyusedasa
primemoverwhereveraconstantrateofoscillationorspeedisrequired,providedthelimitswithinwhich
theforcestendingtobringthemovingsystemtoagivenpositionareproportionatetothedisplacements,
arenotmateriallyexceeded.ThepressureoftheairconfinedinthecylinderwhentheplungerJisinits
centralpositionwillalwaysbepracticallythatofthesurroundingatmosphere,forwhilethecylinderisso
constructedasnottopermitsuchsuddenescapeofairastosensiblyimpairormodifytheactionoftheair

apawlRtheoscillationofwhichdrivesatrainofwheels.Thesemayconstitutethetrainofaclockorof
anyothermechanism.ThepawlRispivotedatRanditsbifurcatedendengageswiththeteethofthe
ratchetwheelalternatelyonoppositesidesofthesame,oneendofthepawlateachhalfoscillationacting
topropelthewheelforwardthroughthespaceofonetoothwhenitisengagedandlockedbytheother
endonthelasthalfoftheoscillationwhichbringsthefirstendoftheoscillationintopositiontoengage
withanothertooth.

Heretofore,engines,operatedbytheapplicationofaforcesuchastheelastictensionofsteamoragas
underpressure,havebeenprovidedwithaflywheel,orsomerotarysystemequivalentinitseffectand
possessingrelativelygreatmechanicalinertia,whichwasrelieduponformaintainingauniformspeed.I
haveproduced,however,anenginewhichwithoutsuchappurtenancesproduces,underverywide
variationsofpressure,load,andotherdisturbingcauses,anoscillatingmovementofconstantperiod,and
haveshownanddescribedthesamein[USPatent#514,169].Adescriptionoftheprincipleofthe
constructionandmodeofoperationofthisdeviceisnecessarytoanunderstandingofmypresent
invention.Whenaspringwhichpossessasensibleinertiaisbroughtundertensionasbybeingstretched
andthenfreeditwillperformvibrationswhichareisochronousand,astoperiod,inthemaindependent
upontherigidityofthespring,anditsowninertiaorthatofthesystemofwhichitmayforman
immediatepart.Thisisknowntobetrueinallcaseswheretheforcewhichtendstobringthespringor
movablesystemintoagivenpositionisproportionatetothedisplacement.Inutilizingthisprinciplefor
thepurposeofproducingreciprocatingmovementofaconstantperiod,Iemploytheenergyofsteamor
gasunderpressure,actingthroughpropermechanism,tomaintaininoscillationapiston,andconnect
withitorcausetoactuponsuchpistonaspring,preferablyanairspring,undersuchconditionsasto
automaticallyregulatetheperiodofthevibration,sothatthealternateimpulsesofthepowerimpelled

Insuchanapparatusitbeingessentialthattheinertiaofthemovingsystemandtherigidityofthespring

chambersonoppositesidesofthepiston.Thespecialconstructionofthisdevicemaybevaried
considerably,butitisdesirablethatalltheports,andmoreparticularly,theexhaustportsbemadelarger
thanisusuallydone,sothatnoforceduetotheactionofthesteamorcompressedairinthechamberswill
tendtoretardoracceleratethemovementofthepistonineitherdirection.Thepistonbisecuredtoarod
hwhichextendsthroughthecylinderheads,thelowerendcarryingtheslidevalveabovedescribedand
theupperendhavingsecuredtoitaplungerjinacylinderIfixedtothecylinderaandinlinewithit.The
cylinderIiswithoutportsofanykindandisairtightexceptthatleakagemayoccuraroundthepistonrod
whichdoesnotrequiretobeveryclosefitting,andconstitutesanordinaryformofairspring.
Ifsteamoragasunderpressurebeadmittedthroughtheportctoeithersideofthepistonb,thelatter,as
willbeunderstood,maybemaintainedinreciprocation,anditisfreetomove,inthesensethatits
movementineitherdirectionceasesonlywhentheforcetendingtoimpelitandthemomentumwhichit
hasacquiredarecounterbalancedbytheincreasingpressureofthesteaminthatendofthecylinder
towardwhichitismoving,andasinitsmovementthepistonhasshutoffatagivenpoint,thepressure
thatimpelleditandestablishedthepressurethattendstoreturnit,itisthenimpelledintheopposite
direction,andthisactioniscontinuedaslongastherequisitepressureisapplied.Themovementsofthe
pistoncompressandrarifytheairinthecylinderIatoppositeendsofthesamealternately,andthisresults
intheheqatingofthecylinder.Butsinceavariationofthetemperatureoftheairinthechamberwould
affecttherigidityoftheairspring,ImaintainthetemperatureuniformasbysurroundingthecylinderI
withajacketawhichisopentotheairandfilledwithwater.
Insuchanengineasthatjustdescribedthenormalpressurewillproduceastrokeofdeterminedlength,
whichmaybeincreasedordiminishedaccordingtotheincreaseofpressureaboveorthereductionof
pressurebelowthenormalanddueallowanceismadeinconstructingtheengineforavariationinthe
lengthofstrokeoramplitudeofvibrationrespectively.Theperiodismainlydeterminedbytherigidityof
theairspringandtheinertiaofthemovingsystemandImaythereforesecureanyperiodofoscillation
withinverywidelimitsbyproperlyadjustingthesefactors,asbyvaryingthedimensionsoftheair
chamberwhichmaybeequivalenttovaryingtherigidityofthespring,orbyadjustingtheweightofthe
movingparts.Thislatterisreadilyaccomplishedbymakingprovisionfortheattachmenttothepistonrod
ofoneormoreweightsh.Sincetheonlyworkwhichthesmallenginehastoperformisthereciprocation
ofthevalveattachedtothepistonrod,itsloadissubstantiallyuniformanditsperiodbyreasonofits
constructionwillbeconstant.Whatevermaybetheloadonthemainenginethereforethesteamis

inthemainengineisovercome.
Thecontrolofthemainenginebytheengineofconstantperiodmaybeeffectedinotherwaysof
whichFigure2willserveasanillustration.Inthiscasethepistonofthecontrollingengineconstitutesthe
slidevalveofthemainengine,sothatthelattermaybeconsideredasoperatedbytheexhaustofthe
former.InthefigureIhaveshowntwocylindersAAplacedendtoendwithapistonBandBineach.
Thecylinderofthecontrollingengineisformedbyorinthecasingintermediatetothetwomain
cylindersbutinallotheressentialrespectstheconstructionandmodeofoperationofthecontrolling
engineremainsasdescribedinconnectionwithFigure1.Theexhaustportsdd,however,constitutethe
inletportsofthecylindersAAandtheexhaustofthelatteriseffectedthroughtheportsm,mwhichare
controlledbythepistonsBandBrespectively.Theinletportfortheadmissionofthesteamtothe
controllingengineissimilartothatinFigure1andisindicatedbythedottedcircleatthecenterofthe
pistonb.
Anengineofthekinddescribedpossessmanyandimportantadvantages.Amuchmoreperfectregulation
anduniformityofactionissecured,whiletheengineissimpleanditsweightsforagivencapacityisvery
greatlyreduced.Thereciprocatingmovementofthepistonmaybeconvertedintorotarymotionoritmay
beutilizedandappliedinanyothermannerdesired,eitherdirectlyorindirectly.
In[USPatent#514,169]Ihaveshownanddescribedtworeciprocatingenginescombinedinsuch
mannerthatthemovementoroperationofoneisdependentuponandcontrolledbytheother.Inthe
presentcase,however,thecontrollingengineisnotdesignednoradaptedtoperformotherworkthanthe
regulationoftheperiodoftheother,anditismoreoveranengineofdefinedcharacterwhichhasthe
capabilityofanoscillatingmovementofconstantperiod.
