UT SCANNING STEP FOR EXAMINATION

A) EQUIPMENT PREPARATION
1. UT set
2. Probe (0, 45, 60, 70 )
3. V1 calibration block
4. V2 Calibration block
5. IOW reference block
6. Couplant

B) CALIBRATION
1. Set up probe data in UT set
I. Probe angle
II. Probe size
III. Probe frequency
IV. Shear wave velocity (3240 50 m/s) or Compressional
velocity (5920 50 m/s)
V. Range
VI. Thickness of calibration block

2. Use V1 calibration block and selected probe, scan and find the echo
signal from 100mm radius of curve part.
I. Marking the index point of probe.
II. Measure and record the X-value of index point in UT set.

3. Confirmation of probe setting

I. Scan the 1.5mm hole at V1 block. Measure the angle using
trigonometry method.

4. Probe sensitivity
I. Detection of 1.5mm hole at V1 block show that probe has
good sensitivity.
II. Detection of 100mm,91mm and 85mm from V1 block show
that probe has good sensitivity.
5. DAC Curve
I. Use IOW reference block with 3mm SDH for scanning.
II. Minimum 3 point need to scan for DAC curve where
a. First point t (thickness of specimen)
b. Second point t
c. Third point 2t
III. Make sure all three points are suitable for DAC curve. Make sure the
selected SDH not too large difference with the thickness of
specimen for good DAC curve.

6. Store all the data in UT set for ease of reference during scanning the
specimen.

C) PRIOR SCANNING
1. Record the data from specimen. (S/N,Size and thickness)
2. Marking the centreline of weld.
3. Calculate the :
I. Half skip distance
= thickness x tan

II. Full skip distance

= 2x [ thickness x tan ]
III. Beam path for half skip distance
= thickness/cos

IV. Beam path for Full skip distance.

= 2x [ thickness /cos ]

D) SCANNING-NORMAL PROBE (LAMINATION CHECK)

1. Perform lamination check using normal probe. Record for any indication of
lamination.

E) SCANNING - ANGLE PROBE (DEFECT CHECK)

1. Prior to scanning, set up the GATE at UT set screen by refer to beam path
distance (start and witdh of the GATE)
2. For plate scanning, amend the gain to +6dB. For pipe scanning, amend
the gain to +12dB.
3. Scan at half skip distance and full skip distance to find and evaluate the
indication and defect.
4. Scan inspection area between full skip distance and centreline of weld.
Record and evaluate any indication.
5. Scan properly and avoid wrong movement and overlap of probe.
