Cylindersarenumberedfromthefrontgearcover
endoftheengine.

Todeterminetherightandleftbanksonthe
engine,standattherearoftheengineandface
thefront.

Twocrankshaftrevolutionsarerequiredtoadjust
allofthevalves.

Eachcylinderhastworockerlevers.Ontheleft
bank,thelevernearesttotherearoftheengineis
theintakelever.Ontherightbank,theexhaust
valveisnearesttotherear.

Onepairofvalvesareadjustedateachindex
markbeforerotatingtheenginetothenextindex
mark.

theenginetopreventdirtfromenteringtheengine
whentherockerlevercoversareremoved.

Adjust

Valveadjustmentmarksareonthevibration
damper.Themarksmustbealignedwiththe
pointer.

Rotatetheengineclockwise,asthearrowonthe
pulleyindicates,withabarringtool.

Ifnot,rotatetheengine180degrees.

Holdbothrockerleversagainstthecrossheads.
Turntheadjustingscrewsuntiltheytouchthe
pushrods.Turnthelocknutsuntiltheytouchthe
levers.

Thecylinderwiththeadjustingscrewsthatare
nearlythesameheightisreadyforvalve
adjustment.Thesecondcylinderthatisnot
readyforadjustmentwillhavetheadjusting
screwfortheintakevalvesmorethanfive
threadsabovetheexhaustscrew.

Therockerleverswillbeclosetothesameheight
abovethetopoftherockerleverhousingonthe
cylinderreadyforvalveadjustment.

Iftherockerlevershavenotbeenremovedand
installedagain,wigglethevalverockerleverson

thetwocylindersinquestion.Thecrossheadsand
valvesonthecylinderwherebothleversfeel
loosearereadytoadjust.

CAUTION
Usethecorrectfiringorderfortheengine.
Failuretodosocancauseenginedamage.

Adjustmentcanbeginonanyvalvesetmark.In
theexample,assumetheR16markisaligned
andtheadjustingscrewheightforthevalveon
cylindernumber1rightbankisthesame,
indicatingthevalveisclosedandreadyto
adjust.

Afteridentifyingwhichcylinderisreadytobe
adjusted,followtheenginefiringorderfor
subsequentadjustments.

Crossheadadjustmentmustalwaysbemade
beforeattemptingtoadjustthevalves.

Adjustthecrossheadsonthecylinderthathas
bothvalvesclosed.

Loosenthecrossheadadjustingscrewlocknuts
ontheintakeandexhaustvalvecrossheads.

Usethefollowingproceduretoadjustboththe
intakeandexhaustcrossheads.

Turntheadjustingscrewoutatleastoneturn.

Holdthecrossheaddownagainstitsguide.

Turntheadjustingscrewinuntilittouchesthetop
ofthevalvestem,butdoesnotraisethe
crosshead.

Theadjustingscrewmustnotturnwhenthe
locknutistightened.

Tightenthelocknutusingtorquewrenchservice
tool,PartNumberST699,withadapter(1).

TorqueValue:45n.m[33ftlb]

Tightenthelocknutusingtorquewrenchservice
tool,PartNumberST699,withoutadapter.

clearanceiscorrectonboththeintakeandthe
exhaustvalvesonthecylinderbeingadjusted.

Aftertheoverheadhasbeencompletelyset,
checktheadjustingscrewprotrusion.
Approximatelythreethreadsmustbeexposed
abovethelocknut.

Ifnot,lookfor:

Rockerhousinggasketmissing
Pushrodnotinsocket
Camfollowersocketnotseatedproperly
Nutthicknessnotstandard
Crossheadoffvalvestem.
