Efficientreadingdependsontheabilitytothinkcritically.Manyexpertsarguethatactivereadingisthe
sameascriticalthinking.Youreadwithyourbrain,notwithyoureyes;readingisathinkingactivity.
Whenwespeakspecificallyofreadingcritically,weareemphasizingtheimportantroleofevaluatingor
judgingideas,notjustpassivelytakingthemin.Criticalreadersunderstandthefacts,graspadeeper
understandingoftheideasthatconnecttothedetails,evaluatetheideas,andformintelligentopinions.
Followingaresomeoftheimportantcharacteristicsofcriticalreaders.

Criticalreadersarewillingtospendtimereflectingontheideaspresentedintheirreading
assignments.Theyknowthetimeiswellspenttoenhancetheirunderstanding.

Criticalreadersareabletoraisequestionswhilereading.Theyevaluateandsolveproblems
ratherthanmerelycompileasetoffactstobememorized.

Criticalreaderscanthinklogically.Theyarefactorientedandcanreviewthefacts
dispassionately.Theybasetheirjudgmentsonideasandevidence.

Criticalreaderscanrecognizeerrorinthoughtandpersuasionaswellasrecognizegood
arguments.

diligentinseekingoutthetruth.

Criticalreadersareopenminded.Theyseekalternativeviewsandareopentonewideasthat
maynotnecessarilyagreewiththeirpreviousthoughtsonatopic.Theyarewillingtoreassess
theirviewswhennewordiscordantevidenceisintroducedandevaluated.

eagertoexpresstheirthoughtsandopinions.Theyareexcitedaboutlearning.

Criticalreadersareabletoidentifyargumentsandissues.Theyareabletoaskpenetratingand
thoughtprovokingquestionstoevaluateideas.

Criticalreadersarecreative.Theyseeconnectionsbetweentopicsanduseknowledgefrom
