COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Prerequisite: None, Open to all grades 9-12
This is a fundamentals course that offers a basic introduction to elements/principles of art, media, color theory, art
concepts/techniques, and history of art. It provides experiences in drawing, design, color, painting, graphics, sculpture,
ceramics, crafts, and art appreciation. This course is a prerequisite for all visual arts courses.

LATE ASSIGNMENTS:
Projects: A deduction of 10 points is immediately taken the day after the project is due and not turned in, then 5
points off for every day after the assignment is late. If at the end of the quarter you have not turned in the
assignment, it will stay a zero.
Sketch Book or Process Book: A deduction of 5 points is immediately taken the day after the assignment is due
and not turned in, then 1 point off every day thereafter. If the assignment is not turned in before the end of the
quarter, the grade will stay a zero.

MAKE-UP/MISSED ASSIGNMENTS:
If make-up work is needed due to absences, students are allowed 3 school days to make up missing work. The student
must speak to the teacher about the work due for each class missed. Use the visual arts website to stay abreast of all
assignments even when absent. Students have the option of turning in incomplete work (50% complete) on the
assigned due date and once returned to the student, they will have the remainder of that quarter to work on it
outside of class and resubmit for a high final grade. Make sure the work is turned in BEFORE the quarter deadline.

GRADING RUBRICS:
NWHS art rubrics will be used to grade projects, sketch books/process books, and collaborative group work. The rubrics
define all expectations and intended outcomes for each project.

Sketch Book Homework Assignments, 2016 - 2017


VISUAL ART (BEGINNING), ART I

These are HOMEWORK assignments, intended for work at home, not in class. Late homework will be accepted
with 5 points taken off after the original due date and 1 point per day thereafter. If the assignment is not turned
in before the end of the quarter, the grade will result in a 0. You have the option of turning in an in-complete
(work that is at least 50% complete) assignment on the designated due date, to then work on it at home and turn
it back in for a higher final grade by the end of that Quarter without late penalty points.

Your sketch book grade will be based upon:


1. Composition Use of space on the picture plane.
2. Value/Shading 6 values must be used ranging from very light to very dark.
3. Foreground, middle ground, and background Give a sense of depth.
4. Craftsmanship and Neatness.
5. Effort Does it appear youve spent at least 2hrs. on the drawing, 1hr./week?

09/15/16: Draw any object and make it look like its melting, dont use a candle and be creative!
09/29/16: Create an abstract composition. Use your elements and principles to create the design. Use color!
10/13/16: Draw a bowl of fruit and use pencil or color it, must show emphasis on value.
10/27/16: Create or draw something that scares you personally. Make sure to draw more than just an object.

***All Sketches above are due for a grade by October 28th 2016 (End of 1st Quarter)***

11/10/16: Find an image in magazine/newspaper, cut it in half, glue it in your SB and draw the other half.
12/01/16: Show something youre thankful for through a drawing.
12/15/16: Illustrate something that you would like to do on your winter vacation (Ski, skate, sleep, etc.).
01/12/17: Draw a piece of cake, pie, or any dessert on a plate and make it look delicious.

***All Sketches above are due for a grade by January 24th 2017 (End of 2nd Quarter)***

01/26/17: Tools or electronics. (Any kind; at least two. Sitting on a table or being used)
02/09/17: Illustrate a joke (Choose a joke & draw a picture that goes with it, G-rated)
02/23/17: Create a one or two point perspective drawing. Subject matter: Room, hallway, city, etc.
03/09/17: Draw an object with texture (Example: Animal with fur or scales)
03/23/17: Create a vase w/flowers realistically or the flowers can look dangerous or abstract, your choice.

04/06/17: Create a vase w/flowers realistically or the flowers can look dangerous or abstract, your choice.
04/27/17: Draw the interior of something (room, car, closet, etc.)
05/11/17: Draw your favorite junk food and wrapper
05/25/17: Free choice, BE CREATIVE!

RULES AND PROCEDURES IN VISUAL ARTS CLASSROOM

1. DO NOT BE LATE FOR CLASS! See Northwest Tardy Policy


2. BE RESPECTFUL to yourself, your teacher, administrators, other students, visitors, and materials.
3. Bring all required materials to class each day. Do not come to class unprepared.
4. Art class is not a social time for visiting friends. Art class is for improving your creativity and ability; if you do not do the
work, you will not receive a passing grade. No extra credit will be giving when the expected work is not done and turned in.
5. All assignments must include your first and last name, date and class period. No name, no grade!
6. Art I - Projects will be kept in class and given back to you in April before the art show. All other classes Keep your art in a
safe place (class/portfolios or home) for the art show in April and competitions.
7. You are not allowed do work from other classes in art class. If you are caught doing work from another class, it will be
taken from you and may NOT be returned to you. Likewise, do not work on art in other classes.
8. Every student must contribute to the clean-up process. A deduction of participation points will be taken for not cleaning
his/her area or materials.
9. If students need additional studio time, they can make arrangements with their teacher. We are generally available daily
before and after school.
10. Cell Phones may be used for music (with head phones only) and to use as research for projects. They may NOT BE USED
DURING INSTRUCTION, to watch videos, take pictures, talk on the phone, play games, etc. unless otherwise instructed by
the teacher. See school cell phone policy
11. Bathroom Policy. No use of the restroom during the first and last 10 minutes of class, use the restroom during class change.
12. Hall Passes. Northwest is enforcing the use of hall passes. If you are leaving the classroom, you must have a hall pass with
you designating your destination. (You are never allowed to go to your car throughout the school day.)
