Abstract
Bipolar Personality Disorder is name of one of the most common mental illnesses worldwide;
Most of us might not familiar with the term Bipolar Personality Disorder or Bipolar
Disorder, it is just Because of unawareness or negligence toward mental health, but the
problem is one of the most common problems especially among the todays youth. But the
people are not even concern about the consequences of bipolar disorder, so I have chosen

cause and effect as well as many other aspects of bipolar personality disorder among todays
youth as the topic of my research.

My hypothesis of the research is most of the youth are not aware about what bipolar
personality disorder is when most of them are suffering from bipolar personality disorder, as
they are not aware about it, they dont take necessary action to get rid of this problem,
because of the problem they cant carry out normal daily activities or relationships. Moreover
most of them are treated negatively by family members, friends and relatives as well.

After conducting both secondary research analyzing different we journal, article and news
letter etc as well as survey on thirty different youth based on random sampling and also an in-
depth interview with psychologist Naz Karim, I have found out that most of the youth are
suffering from bipolar personality disorder, as they are not aware about it, they dont take
necessary action to get rid of this problem, this is also hampering their daily activities and
healthy relationship with others. Moreover most of them are treated negatively by family
members, friends and relatives as well. In most cases symptoms of bipolar disorder is ignored
or taken normally.

Introduction
Now a day, especially in Bangladesh, most of the people are not aware about their mental
health. Sometimes we have to live very stressful busy life, there would be so many incidents
which make us unhappy which could create mental illness but unfortunately most of the
people never taken care of their mental health, so in such cases when they caught by any
mental illness, because of negligence it could be developed gradually and turn out into many
disorders. Most of the youth are the victims of different mental illness cause due to the the
changing surroundings or any incidents that causes mental stress which may lead to mental
illness. My topic for the research is one of the major mental illnesses among todays youth
which is bipolar personality disorder or bipolar disorder, its cause and effect as well as
different aspects.

Bipolar disorder is characterized by dramatic, intense shifts in mood. When in a down cycle,
withdrawal, sadness, and despair are hallmarks of the depression many bipolar people face.
On an upswing, extroversion, high energy, and intense joy may accompany what is called the
manic period. Different people cycle at different rates some moods can last weeks or
months, others just a few days. At times, symptoms and mood shifts may be so severe that the
individual cannot carry out normal daily activities or relationships. (Vann, M., n.d.)
is said that if the Bipolar Disease is not treated, there is 15% chance of dying by suicide.
Bipolar Disorder typically comes about in late adolescence or early adulthood and is said to
be the third major killer among people aged 15-25 years.(About Bipolar Personality, n.d.)

Bipolar disorder is the fifth leading cause of disability worldwide. It is the ninth leading cause
of years lost to death or disability worldwide. The number of individuals with bipolar
disorder who commit suicide is 60 times higher than that of the general population. People
who have bipolar disorder are at a higher risk of also suffering from substance abuse and
other mental health problems. Males may develop bipolar disorder earlier in life compared to
females. (We Bring Doctors Knowledge To you. 2012)

Background
Cause & Effect of Bipolar Personality Disorder among 6
Todays Youth

Bipolar personality disorder which is also well known as bipolar disorder, mood disorder or
personality disorder is very common problem among todays youths. But as mental health is
always neglected in our country most of us even might not aware about the term Bipolar
personality Disorder, when we are suffering from it. We might not know the symptoms and
the consequences of the problem so that in most cases it is neglected or taken normally and
that why its develop gradually and causes many other mental diseases and it might lead the
situation beyond control. So everyone should know more about Bipolar Personality Disorder,
its symptoms, reasons, how does it affects daily life and healthy relationship with others and
also how to get rid of this problem.

Types of Bipolar Personality Disorder

Bipolar Personality Disorder has divided into two major parts.

Bipolar
Personality
Disorder

Depressive
Stage: 1 Manic
Stage: Episode
2
Episode
Depressive Episode is the initial stage of bipolar personality disorder, In this stage because of
the negligence or unawareness people take the symptoms normally or they do not care about
this as a result the disease develop gradually and turn in to manic episode, Manic episode is
the stage where the situation goes beyond control. People can easily get rid of this problem
when it is at depressive episode but it is really difficult to get rid of this problem when it
reaches at manic episode. In most cases depressive episode is taken normally or ignored so
that is why problem develop gradually and turned into manic episode, (N. Karim, Personal
Communication, April 4, 2012).

Symptoms of Bipolar Personality Disorder:

Symptoms of a depressive period include:

Loss of interest in activities that were once enjoyed
Long periods of worry, sadness, or emptiness
Tiredness or fatigue
Difficulty concentrating or focusing
Changes in appetite or sleep
Restlessness
Cause & Effect of Bipolar Personality Disorder among 7
Todays Youth

Irritability
Suicidal thoughts, plans, or attempts
Extended periods of feeling worried or empty
Isolation from friends and family
Having problems concentrating, remembering, and making decisions
Change in eating, sleeping, or other habits (including anorexia nervosa, bulimia, and
other eating disorders)
Abuse of alcohol and drugs, especially cocaine
Dependence on sleeping pills (Timberline Knolls, n.d. & Vann, M., n.d.)

Symptoms of a manic period include:

Feeling jumpy or wired
Extreme irritability
Long period of feeling very energetic, outgoing, and upbeat
Racing thoughts
Talking very fast
Not needing much (or a normal amount) of sleep
Excessive/irrational confidence in ones own abilities (Vann, M., n.d.)

People should be concern about bipolar personality disorder from the very beginning and my
focus of the research is on depressive episode, but people should about both depressive as
well as manic episode.

Reason of Bipolar Personality Disorder:

Doctors don't completely understand the causes of bipolar disorder. But they've gained a
greater understanding in the past 10 years of the bipolar spectrum, which includes the elated
highs of mania to the lows of major depression, along with various mood states between these
two extremes. Experts do believe that bipolar disorder often runs in families, and there is a
genetic component to this mood disorder. There is also growing evidence that environment
and lifestyle issues have an effect on the disorder's severity. Stressful life events -- or alcohol
or drug abuse -- can make bipolar disorder more difficult to treat. (Abraham, 2010)

According to psychologist Naz Karim there are three major reasons behind bipolar
personality disorder, reasons are:-

Genetic Factors
Cause & Effect of Bipolar Personality Disorder among 8
Todays Youth

Reason s
of Bipolar
Personali Bio Chemical Factors
ty
Disorder

Environmental Factors

Genetic Factors:

An individual can inherit the gene of bipolar personality disorder which

leads a person toward bipolar personality disorder.

Bio Chemical Factors:

Due to any accident if any bio chemical imbalance occurs inside the brain, it might causes
bipolar personality disorder. Imbalanced hormones may be involved in causing or triggering
bipolar disorder.

Environmental Factors:

Anything around us that create huge mental pressure or mental stress can cause bipolar
personality disorder, For example it could be family problem, financial crisis, any deep guilt
feeling or death of dearest one can cause great depression which might lead to a person to
bipolar personality disorder or bipolar disorder. (Personal Communication, April 4, 2012).

Another reason for bipolar personality disorder is

Pregnancy
For women who are genetically or otherwise biologically predisposed to developing bipolar
disorder, the postnatal period can coincide with a first episode of bipolar disorder. (Black Dog
Institute, 2009)

Effect of Bipolar Personality Disorder:

The effects of bipolar disorder symptoms on a person's life can range from minor
disturbances to major disruption. This depends on whether the person receives an accurate
Cause & Effect of Bipolar Personality Disorder among 9
Todays Youth

diagnosis, including identification of any co-occurring disorders. For example, there is a very
high rate of substance abuse or dependence co-occurring with bipolar disorder. The effects of
bipolar disorder may include:

damaged relationships
poor job or school performance
legal or financial consequences from impulsive decisions
medical side effects from prolonged abuse of drugs, alcohol or prescriptions
repetitive self-mutilation or other self-harming behaviors
suicide, in extreme cases

The length of the manic and depressive episodes also takes a toll on the family, friends and
co-workers of those who suffer with bipolar disorder. Weeks of unpredictable behavior by a
person with manic depression make it difficult to rely on the sufferer to fulfill obligations,
and often times loved ones struggle to maintain a sense of security. (Timberline Knolls, n.d.)
Research Questions
Through my research I will look forward to find out the cause and effect of bipolar
personality disorder among todays youth in Bangladesh, the consequences of the problem
and how they are being treated, whether they actually know about their problem or not. My
research question will be

What is the percentage of our youth knowing about bipolar personality disorder?
What are the reasons behind bipolar personality in
Bangladeshi youth?
How it is affecting youth to carry out normal daily
activities or relationships?
How a bipolar personality disorder patient treated in
society and his/her family as well?
How can someone get rid of bipolar personality
disorder?
What is the responsibility of family and friends
toward a person suffering from bipolar personality
disorder?

Hypothesis:
Cause & Effect of Bipolar Personality Disorder among 10
Todays Youth

Most of the youth are not aware about what bipolar personality disorder is when most of them
are suffering from bipolar personality disorder, as they are not aware about it, they dont take
necessary action to get rid of this problem, because of the problem they cant carry out
normal daily activities or relationships. Moreover most of them are treated negatively by
family members, friends and relatives as well.

In most cases symptoms of bipolar personality disorder taken normally or ignored, moreover
in our country mental health is always neglected, so that it develops gradually. Bipolar
personality disorder or bipolar disorder is very common among todays youth but because of
the negligence or unawareness people do not take necessary action at the right time, So I m
expecting that I could prove my hypothesis through my research that majority of the todays
youths are suffering from bipolar personality disorder. This is affecting their daily activities
as well as relationship.
Methodology:

Methodology is the systematic study of methods that are, can be, or have been applied within
a discipline or a particular procedure or set of procedures. It consists of both primary and
secondary data. For this research I have used two kind of method. One is primary method and
another one is secondary method. In primary method I have conducted a survey which had a
sample size of thirty. This survey has been conducted on the students of North South
University, my relatives and neighbor. My target group was youth age between 18 to 25. I
have conducted and in depth interview with a psychologist. In secondary method I have gone
through some of the literature from web journals, article, newsletter, blog etc.

Primary data:

In primary data collection, I collected the data myself by surveying 30 respondents who are
youth. All the respondents aged from 18-25. For primary data, I met the respondents and
provided them with questionnaires to collect appropriate information about my queries.

The questionnaire that was used to carry out the research work had thirteen questions in total.
Cause & Effect of Bipolar Personality Disorder among 11
Todays Youth

Where first seven questions were to test bipolar personality and its level among my
respondents, three questions among rest of five questions were multiple choices, one was
close ended and the last one was open-ended question.

Secondary data:

Secondary data is data that has already been collected by someone else for a different purpose
and is available to outside users. For secondary data I have browsed the internet and used
search engines like Google and Yahoo! Search. I followed several links to various websites
that had information about the bipolar personality disorder or bipolar disorder. Due to
convenience and abundance of information on the Internet, I did not extend my secondary
research to any other sources. All the web-addresses are mentioned in the references list.

Data Presentation and Analysis

This section mostly highlights my major findings through which it has been possible to prove
whether my hypothesis is correct or not.

Bipolar Personality Disorder Test:

I my questionnaire first eight questions were to test whether my respondents are suffering
from bipolar personality disorder or not. The questions were

1) Sometimes I am very confident about myself and sometimes in great

confusion
2) For No apparent reason sometimes I get very depressed and sometimes very
happy
3) I have periods of mental dullness and other periods of creative thinking
4) At times I am greatly interested in being with people and at other times I just
want to be left alone with my thoughts.
5) I have had periods of great hopefulness and other periods of equally great
glumness
6) I have had periods of tearfulness and crying and other times when I laugh and
joke excessively.
Cause & Effect of Bipolar Personality Disorder among 12
Todays Youth

7) For no apparent reason I sometimes have been very angry.

8) There have been times when I have felt both high delighted and low depressed
at the same time.

All of those question were asked to test the bipolar personality disorder, each of those
questions were containing five options, which were A) Not at all, B) Just a little bit C)
Moderately D) Quite a lot E) Very often; Bases on their chosen option marks was given and
based on total score bipolar disorder will be identified and the score will be the indicator of
which stage they are in now.

Points for the options are given below

A) Not at all--- (0 points)

B) Just a little bit--- (1 points)
C) Moderately--- (2 points)
D) Quite a lot--- (3 points)
E) Very often--- (3 points)

Result Based on total score:

Higher Stage: 20-24

Moderate Stage: 16-19
Initial Stage: 10-15
No Bipolar Personality Disorder: 0-9

Survey Result Analysis:

Here the result is showing that 90% of the respondents of my sample are suffering from
bipolar personality disorder, Where 30% at higher stage, 47% at moderate stage and 13% are
at initial stage all those stages are included in depressive episode. Social, political,
economical crisis, week family bonding, defective educational system as well as many other
personal problems cause huge mental stress on todays youth every day. This mental stress or
pressure, moreover the negligence about mental health leads many mental illness and among
all the mental illnesses bipolar personality disorder is very common, specially the youth are
victims of it, necessary action should be taken at the initial stage before it turn in to manic
episode. Because it is easily curable at depressive episode rather than manic episode, manic
episode is the stage where the whole situation goes beyond control. I have already mentioned
that bipolar personality disorder is said to be the third major killer, it might not kill physically
but it damages persons potentially, interest to do any work. It is also known as the fifth major
reason of disability worldwide, Bangladesh is not exceptional, here in Bangladesh bipolar
personality disorder is very common and victims are mostly youth. Among all the mental
illness bipolar personality disorder is most common. (N. Karim, Personal Communication,
April 4, 2012). Though my survey and test I have got the little reflection of it.

Next five questions in my survey questionnaire is to define how bipolar personality disorder
patient treated by their family members, relatives as well as friends.

Question: 9: If any of your friend gets angry or feels depressed

for no apparent reason how will his/her parents react?

Here we can see that 7% of the parents will not care about this, because now a days we living
very busy life, moreover mental health is always neglected so parents consider the symptoms
of bipolar personality is too little issue to care about, another 13% parents will get angry or
irritate with the behavior, as the parents are unfamiliar with bipolar disorder or bipolar
personality disorder so they consider the symptoms as spoiled behavior and get angry with
their child. And 47% of the parents take it as normal behavior; they think it is normal
behavior for this age. Obviously because of the hormonal changes there is a change in youths
behavior but those behavioral changes are different from symptoms of bipolar personality
disorder but due to unawareness or negligence parents actually do not the problem. So that in
most cases it is ignored or taken normally. Here the result is showing that only 37% parents
will try to figure out the problem.

Question: 10: How will relatives react to a person having mood

This question was to determine the relatives attitude toward a person having bipolar
personality disorder. 13% of my respondents think that the relatives will avoid the person,
because of mood swing problem relatives find it difficult that how the person will react to
their behavior so the relatives find it better to avoid the person. 30% will not bother because
they considered it as a little issue to care about in these busy days. 37% of my respondents
think relatives will think negative like they might think that the person is dump by girlfriend
or boyfriend, or the person is drug addicted that is why their behavior is so or they might also
think the person is manner less. Only 20% think relatives will try to figure out the problem.

The answer is very shocking and supportive to my hypothesis, A huge portion of my

respondents which is 93% think that it is not a mental illness at all, Where different survey is
saying that bipolar personality disorder is the third major killer worldwide, fifth leading
reasons for disability but here my respondents do not considered it as a problem, It is just
because of their negligence and unawareness. If they were aware about the problem and how
it is damaging persons ability and how its leads a person to commit suicide then anyone can
never say that it is not problem at all.

12) B. Does it require treatment?

Here 97% of the respondents think it does not require treatment. This result is result is much
more shocking then the previous one, because in the previous graph we have seen that 7% of
the respondents think it is a mental problem but here we can see that only 3% think its require
treatment that mean so the rest of 4% respondents who believe it is a mental problem, think it
does not require treatment! So here we can see how our mental health is being neglected.
Cause & Effect of Bipolar Personality Disorder among 20
Todays Youth

At the end of my questionnaire there was an open ended question

to determine what my respondents think how extreme sift in
mood affect an individuals daily activities and relationship.

From my open ended question I have get to know that most of my respondents think it has
negative impact on relationship. Most of my respondents think it deteriorates ones daily
activities and irritating to the person with whom the person is sharing relationship. It hampers
the office environment. Productivity level goes down and it is also disturbing to the
colleagues and classmates or group mates with whom the person is working and sharing
relationship. People having this problem cannot concentrate on their study or work so that
successful achievement becomes very difficult for them. Even healthy social life might be at
risk because of bipolar personality disorder. People misunderstand the person. So no matter
whether my respondents are suffering from bipolar personality disorder or not, or they are
aware about bipolar disorder or not, at one point all of them agreed with is it has negative
impact on daily activities as well as healthy relationship with other.

Summary of Research Finding

Cause & Effect of Bipolar Personality Disorder among 21
Todays Youth

Through my research I have found out that Most of the people are not aware about the bipolar
personality disorder which is considered as the third major killer worldwide even in
Bangladesh most of the our youth, who are considered as future leader, are suffering from
bipolar personality disorder, Their social as well as family life is being hampered. Even an
individuals productivity level goes down, daily activities hampered greatly because of
bipolar disorder; people get frustrated which is the great barrier to their success. People
around the person get irritated by the persons behavior, healthy relationship with family
member, friends, and relatives hamper greatly. Interesting findings from my research is
people believe that it hampers greatly a persons healthy relationship but most of them who
believe it is creating many problem, dont considered it as mental illness. My survey is
showing that very few people considered it as mental illness and among those very few,
people some people think it does not require any treatment. It is just because of the
unawareness about the disease and its consequences and also the negligence about mental
health.

My hypothesis was most of the youth are not aware about what bipolar personality disorder
is when most of them are suffering from bipolar personality disorder, as they are not aware
about it, they dont take necessary action to get rid of this problem, because of the problem
they cant carry out normal daily activities or relationships. Moreover most of them are
treated negatively by family members, friends and relatives as well.

Though my research findings I can easily say that hypothesis of the research has proven.
Because most of youth in my sample are suffering from bipolar personality disorder. Which
reflecting the overall situation of todays youth. Most of them dont even aware about the
problem; they dont even consider it as a problem where they are facing so many difficulties
in their daily activities as well as relationship because of bipolar disorder. In most cases the
symptoms of the bipolar personality disorder is ignored or the abnormal behavior due to
bipolar disorder taken normally. Thus it can be concluded that through my primary and
secondary research my hypothesis agreed to be correct.

Recommendation:
First of all increasing awareness is very important, in our country mental health is always
neglected, people are not aware about their mental health. Everyone should take care of their
Cause & Effect of Bipolar Personality Disorder among 22
Todays Youth

mental health, if any abnormality noticed in a persons behavior, necessary action should be
taken at the very beginning. People should learn more about bipolar personality disorder.

If any symptoms of bipolar personality disorder or any abnormality is seen in any persons
behavior, it should not be ignored or taken normally or lightly. The person should
immediately consult with psychologist. Counseling or prescribed medicine should be taken
immediately in order to get rid of this problem.

Bipolar personality is easily curable at the initial stage, counseling or sometimes only the
support from friends, relatives is enough to get rid of this problem. Family support plays a
vital role in this case. Family has to be supportive. If anyone faces any difficulty or mental
stress then the family members, friends as well as relatives has to come forward rather than
teasing or ignoring. They should not think negative or avoid the person but take the initiative
to help the person. Most importantly friends should not laugh at such personality or tease the
person, teasing will help the disease develop gradually.

Try to embrace fit, low stress and healthy balanced lifestyle.

Conclusion
To lead a happy and healthy life healthy mental condition is mandatory. Unfortunately mental
health always neglected in our country. Different sort of mental diseases develop gradually
but no one feel like to take necessary action to get rid of the problem because they do not
consider it as a problem. Among different types of mental illness bipolar personality disorder
is very common. The victims are specially the youth. Bipolar personality disorder destroys a
persons capability, makes the person frustrated for nothing, discourage them greatly. It has
bad impact on an individuals relationship as well, furthermore, it greatly hamper the daily
activities. So everyone should be more aware about this disease, should know the reasons &
the way of preventing it. Necessary actions should be taken at a very early stage and
everyone should take good care of their mental health. After all if your mind can work
properly you can win the world.
