2 Connector panels of the SGSN

This section presents the positions and routing of the external cabling
inside the SGSN cabinets, that is cabling from cabinet to environment,
usually through the Data Distribution Frame (DDF). More information on
cabling is available in the document Nokia SGSN Engineering.

The site (outgoing external) cables enter the SGSN system through the
cabling cabinet. The cables are terminated to the cabling panels mounted
inside the cabling cabinets. The cabling panels are connected to the rear
connectors of the cartridges concerned, or to the front connectors of
ESB26, ETS2 and ET2/ET4 plug-in units (E1, T1), with proper connecting
cables.

In SG6 release, the roof panel connection is introduced. Optional ATM

interface (Iu over ATM) is cabled out from the cabinet via roof panels.

The various panels mounted in the cabling cabinets or cabinet roof are
listed in the table below.

1) In SG6 and SG5 release configurations, there are no direct LAN

connections from the computer units (SMMU, OMU, MCHU, and PAPU) to
the CPLAN-A panel; instead, the units are connected to the SWUs (ESB26
plug-in units). From the ESB26 plug-in units, there are uplinks to the
CPLAN-A using CNI cables.

MCHU, and PAPU) are connected to the SWUs (ESB26 plug-in units).
From the ESB26 plug-in units, there are uplinks to the CPLC18 using
CLCS cables.

3) In SG6 release configurations, the STM-1/OC-3 interface is connected

from the ETS2 plug-in units to the CPLC18 using CSM cables.
Additionally, optional ATM interface can be connected from the IOCP-EA
plug-in units to the CPLC18 on the cabinet roof using CSMUS cables.

Cabling panels of the SGSN cabinets

The SGAC cabinet in the SGSN is provided with a cabling cabinet of

eleven connector panels (0 to 10). These panels are cabled to the rear
connectors of the various cartridges mounted on the SGAC and SGBC
cabinets, and to the front connectors of the ESB26, ETS2 and ET2/ET4
plug-in units mounted in the cartridges in the SGAC cabinets.

Additionally, in SG6 release, the optional roof panels can be used in the
SGAC and SGBC cabinets.

The figure below presents the SGSN cabinets on SG6 level.

10.2 SG5 release

In SG5 release, the CPLC18 panel is introduced to Nokia 2G SGSN. The
CPLC18 accommodates 18 optical LC connectors for 18 LAN interfaces.
Each connector provides access to one optical LAN interface of the
ESB26 LAN switch plug-in units (SWUs) housed in LANU units (LASWC-A
cartridges). The LAN interface of the ESB26 is of the type LC connector.
The LAN interfaces in CPLC18 panel are cabled (from the back side of the
panel) to the ETH23 and ETH24 marked LC connectors of the ESB26
plug-in units. CLCS cables are used for internal cabling, and similar cables
for external cabling.

1 Gbit/s optical LAN interfaces for 1 Gbit/s optical uplinks are used in the

11 Optical interface panel (CPLC36)

This section presents Optical interface panel (CPLC36). This is an optional
panel used for STM-1/OC-3 ATM interfaces.

The CPLC36 panel accommodates thirty-six LC connectors for optical

STM-1/OC-3 interfaces. Each LC connector has two sockets for optical
fibre cables. In SG6 relase, each connector provides access to one STM-
1/OC-3 interface of the IOCP-EA plug-in units housed in PAPU units
(CC4C-A cartridges). The STM-1/OC-3 interface of the IOCP-EA is of the
type LC connector. The CSMUS cables are used for internal STM-1/OC-3
cabling and same cable type can be used also for external STM-1/OC-3
cabling.

The CPRS-A panel accommodates ten (10) RJ45 connectors for eight (8)
V.24 and two (2) V.11 interfaces. Each connector provides access to one
interface of a visual display unit / PC or printer provided by the OMU. The
external interfaces are accessed by both of the duplicated OMUs which
provide the changeover signal for the selection of the active unit. For this
reason, there is no need to move the external LPT and VDU cables to
another connector panel due to OMU changeover.

The panel also houses one RJ45 connector for outgoing alarm which is
connected to an intermediate distribution frame or cross connection.

The cables and the connectors should meet the requirements of the UL
1459 standard or the National Electrical Code ANSI/NFPA No.70. The
connector should also meet the requirements of the FCC Part 68.

13.1 Internal cabling

The CPRS-A panels are connected to the rear connectors of the OMU
cartridges using the following cable types:

.
CVKP cables for power supply (connected to the CMM units in the
HLRi)
.
CVKA cables for chaining the power feed cables between the
panels.
. CHF cables for LPT / VDU
. CHE cables for changeover

Power supply and redundancy

Power supply to the CPRS-A panel is provided by the OMU pair in the
MSCi, Transit MSCi, Compact MSCi, SGSN and SRRi, and by the CMM
pair in the HLRi. In order to ensure 2n redundancy, the power supply is
always duplicated. When two CPRS-A panels are installed in the cabling
cabinet, the power feed cables are chained from the second to the first
panel, as shown in the figure below.

An X.25 interface can be cabled in various ways, depending on the

There are several possibilities for making the X.25 connection between the
NMS (OMC) and network element (NE). The connection used depends on
national standards and on the location of the network elements.

If a packet network is used, connections are made using V.35 or V.24 from
the network element to a modem. In practice, V.35 allows longer cables
and fast transmission.
