ON MALE LIBERATION
Jack Sawyer
Publicado en 1974
[pp. 25-27]
Male liberation calls for men to free themselves of the sex-role stereotypes that
limit their ability to be human. Sex-role stereotypes say that men should be
dominant; achieving and enacting a dominant role in relations with others is
often taken as an indicator of success.
o Most men in fact fail to achieve the positions of dominance that sex-role
stereotypes ideally call for. Stereotypes tend to identify such men as
greater or lesser failures, and in extreme cases, men who fail to be
dominant are the object of jokes, scorn, and sympathy from wives, peers,
and society generally. (p. 25) La mayora de hombres falla en
cumplir con el estereotipo de dominante
the battle of women to be free need not be a battle against men as oppressors.
The choice about whether men are the enemy is up to men themselves. (p. 25)
Liberacin de mujeres necesita decisin de hombres de no cumplir
estereotipo de dominante
The popular image of a successful man combines dominance both over women,
in social relations, and over other men, in the occupational world. (p. 26)
Men are breadwinners, and are defined first and foremost by their performance
in this area. This is a serious business and results in an end productbringing
home the bacon. The process area of lifeactivities that are enjoyed for the
immediate satisfaction they bringare not part of the central definition of mens
role. Yet the failure of men to be aware of this potential part of their lives leads
them to be alienated from themselves and from others. Because men are not
permitted to play freely, or show affect, they are prevented from really coming in
touch with their own emotions.
In the increasing recognition of the right of women to participate equally in the
affairs of the world, then, there is both a danger and a promise. The danger is
that women might end up simply with an equal share of the action in the
competitive, dehumanizing, exploitative system that men have created. The
promise is that women and men might work together to create a system that
provides equality to all and dominates no one.
En el modelo heterosexual de la sociedad: From the time they are boys, men are
programmed by the culture to refer exclusively to other men for validation of
their self-worth. A mans comfort and well-being are contingent upon the labor
and nurture of women, but his identityhis knowledge of who he iscan only
be conferred and confirmed by other men.
Under patriarchy, men are the arbiters of identity for both males and females,
because the cultural norm of human identity is, by definition, male identity
masculinity.
The social process whereby people born with cocks attain and maintain
masculinity takes place in male bonding. Male bonding is institutionalized
learned behavior whereby men recognize and reinforce one anothers bona fide
membership in the male gender class and whereby men remind one another that
they were not born women.
Boys learn very early that they had better be able to bond. What they learn in
order to bond is an elaborate behavioral code of gestures, speech, habits and
attitudes, which effectively exclude women from the society of men. Male
bonding is how men learn from each other that they are entitled under patriarchy
to power in the culture. Male bonding is how men get that power, and male
bonding is how it is kept. Therefore, men enforce a taboo against unbondinga
taboo which is fundamental to patriarchal society.
the cultural bias against male homosexuality stems directly from these two
facts: That patriarchy requires that men maintain their brotherhood through a
common contempt of women; and that the male homosexual act is construed as
a threat to the male-male bond, since there is the implication that one of the
partners gets fucked as a woman.
quisiera luchar contra las injusticias entre sexos: (1) Estudiar feminismo;
(2) Cuestionar los diferentes escenarios del mal bonding What is necessary
is for genital males to betray the presumptions of their own gender class. (p. 48)
None of us can presume that we have yet done enough in our own lives to
eradicate our allegiance to masculinity. Unless we change, we cannot claim to be
comrades with women. Until we change, the oppressor is us. (p. 49) Hasta que
hombre no comienza a cuestionarse a s mismo, no puede aliarse a mujeres,
sigue siendo opresor.
Women students taught me that rapists are not peculiar, abnormal men. Rapists
are very normal masculine men. There is no exact profile of a typical rapist
because rapists come in all sizes and shapes, all races and nationalities, all ages
and social classes. Many are white middle-class husbands and fathers. (p. 52)
masculinidad
o Women students taught me that rape is not an isolated, brutal crime
against women. It is only one small part of a systematic pattern of male
violence against women in America.
So if men really want to help women
as we always claimone concrete step is often to get out of the way. Women
students in my class learned more from each other than they ever could have if I
was there. That fact crashes rather heavily into my male ego and my professorial
conceitbut its true and it wont go away.
espectador.
In his race for power, man is able to separate mind and body: he sees the mind
as transcending the human condition, and he turns his body into the place of
natural alienation. He does not generally acknowledge that his body takes any
part in thought.
otra trasciende
o Such are the ironies of sexism: The powerful have a narrower range of
options than the powerless, because the powerless can also imitate the
powerful and get away with it. It may even enhance status, if done with
charm and gracethat is, is not threatening. For the powerful, any hint
of behaving like the powerless is a fall from grace. (nota 4, p. 197)
We are under the constant careful scrutiny of other men. Other men watch us,
rank us, grant our acceptance into the realm of manhood. Manhood is
demonstrated for other mens approval. It is other men who evaluate the
performance.
hombres
Women become a kind of currency that men use to improve their ranking on
the masculine social scale. (Even those moments of heroic conquest of women
[/] carry, I believe, a current of homosocial evaluation.) Masculinity is a
homosocial enactment. We test ourselves, perform heroic feats, take enormous
risks all because we want other men to grant us our manhood. (p. 186-87) Las
hombres.
What we call masculinity is often a hedge [una valla] against being revealed as
a fraud, an exaggerated set of activities that keep others from seeing through us,
and a frenzied [frentico] effort to keep at bay those fears within ourselves. (p.
Shame leads to silencethe silences that keep other people believing that we
actually approve of the things that are done to women, to minorities, to gays and
lesbians in our culture. The frightened silence as we scurry past a woman being
hassled by men on the street. That furtive silence when men make sexist or racist
jokes in a bar. That clammyhanded silence when guys in the office make gay-
bashing jokes. Our fears are the sources of our silences, and mens silence is
what keeps the system running. This might help to explain why women often
complain that their male friends or partners are often so understanding when
they are alone and yet laugh at sexist jokes or even make those jokes themselves
when they are out with a group.
(mujeres, homosexuales, minoras). No nos atrevemos a cuestionar
pblicamente esa masculinidad hegemnica y callamos o incluso
vnculos homosociales. Muy interesante.
Our efforts to maintain a manly front cover everything we do. What we wear.
How we talk. How we walk. What we eat. Every mannerism, every movement
contains a coded gender language. (p. 190) Esfuerzos por ejercer
masculinidad atraviezan todo lo que hacemos
This feminist definition of masculinity as the drive for power is theorized from
womens point of view. It is how women experience masculinity. But it assumes
a symmetry between the public and the private that does not conform to mens
experiences. Feminists observe that women, as a group, do not hold power in
our society. They also observe that individually, they as women, do not feel
powerful. They feel afraid, vulnerable. Their observation of the social reality and
their individual experiences are therefore symmetrical. Feminism also observes
that men, as a group, are in power. Thus, with the same symmetry, feminism has
tended to assume that individually men must feel powerful. (p. 194) Mujeres
o This is why the feminist critique of masculinity often falls on deaf ears
with men. When confronted with the analysis that men have all the
power, many men react incredulously. Mens feelings are not the
feelings of the powerful, but of those who see themselves as powerless.
These are the feelings that come inevitably from the discontinuity
between the social and the psychological, between the aggregate analysis
that reveals how men are in power as a group and the psychological fact
that they do not feel powerful as individuals.
Our imperfect analysis of our own situation leads us to believe that we men
need more power, rather than leading us to support feminists efforts to rearrange
power relationships along more equitable lines.
