Ionic and Covalent Bonding Poster

You will need to create a presentation poster about the difference between ionic and
covalent bonding. The following items MUST be included on your poster to receive
full credit:

Ionic Bonding:
1. Definition of an ionic bond
2. What types of atoms are held together in an ionic bond.
3. 2 examples of ionic bonds hand-drawn out (Lewis dot structure) showing exactly
what is happening with the electrons in a bond. Dont forget the compound names.
6. Definition of a polyatomic ion and at least 3 examples
7. An explanation of how to name ionic compounds and at least 5 examples
(including polyatomic ions and transition metals)
Covalent Bonding:
1. Definition of a covalent bond.
2. What types of atoms are held together in a covalent bond
3. 2 examples of covalent bonds using (hand-drawn) Lewis Dot structures to show
what exactly is happening with the electrons. (Use different colors for the different
atoms)
4. Explanation of a single, double, and triple bond.
5. A Lewis Dot Structure of a molecule with a single bond, one with a double bond,
and one with a triple bond. Dont forget the compound names.
6. The 5 different shapes molecules can make. Give a hand-drawn example of each.
(from model lab)
7. Explain what molecular polarity is and how it works (think: electronegativity).
Give and hand draw 2 molecular examples- one being a polar molecule, the other
nonpolar.

8. For the molecule CHCl3 show the following information:

a. Type of bond
b. Name of molecule
c. Lewis dot structure
e. Shape
f. Label each bond as polar or nonpolar (electronegativity difference)
g. Is the overall molecule polar or nonpolar? Why?
