TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD
Study Questions for Chapters 1-3

Answer each of the following questions using RARE form. Make sure that your answers
use several supporting examples, details, or quotations. Type and double space your
answers on a separate sheet. This sheet must be passed in BY THE END of class today.
These will be scored as a quiz grade.

Chapter 1 Questions

1. Why were the children fascinated with the Radley house? What was the first dare they made
concerning the house?

2. How did the Radley house acquire its reputation? Do you think it was a deserved reputation?

3. How did the Finches originally come to Montgomery? What was the disturbance between
the North and the South?

4. Compare and contrast Dills family situation with Scouts

5. What evidence showed that Scout was a bright little girl?

6. What do you think of the kids goal to make Boo Radley come out? Is it a cruel activity or
just a game? Explain your thinking.

Chapters 2, 3 Questions

1. Why was Scouts first day at school a terrible disappointment to her? Why did she continue
to be bored?

2. Why did Scout tell Miss Caroline about Walter Cunningham?

3. What evidence indicated that Atticus, in contrast to Miss Caroline, had respect for Walters
country manners?

4. What advice about human nature did Atticus give to Scout? Do you think that this is good
advice? Explain why or why not.

II Literary Terms and Devices

Point of View- Point of view in literature refers to the voice telling the story. It could either be a
narrator who sits outside of the story or one of the characters in the story.

1. Who is narrating this story? Which type of narration do you think is being used- support your
reasoning with evidence from the story.

2. Is the story being told as it happens or as a memory of past times? Support your reasoning with
evidence from the story.

Exposition- The exposition refers to the beginning of the plot. In the exposition the reader
receives the background information necessary to understand the actions and motivations of the
characters in the story. Reread the first four pages and record what you learn about the setting,
the main characters, and beginnings of a conflict. Use the chart below to record your
information:
