1 Area X Update
Chapter meetings are already underway, dues have been paid, and some chapters have
already initiated new members into their chapters! Your chapter presidents and other
officers are working hard to prepare for an exciting and fulfilling year of sisterhood, personal
and professional development, and lots of fun!

Mark all of your calendars for the annual Area X Celebration on the morning of Saturday
March 18, 2017. Our guest speaker is a vibrant speaker, author, and professor. Your chapter
can start creating one silent auction basket and one opportunity basket. (Thats rightwe
can have them again!) The Hawaiian theme will get you in the mood to register for the
Southwest Regional Conference, to be held in Honolulu, Hawaii July 4-7, 2017.

Did you just notice the new name for our state organization? We also have a new
website address, dkgcalifornia.org. I urge you to take some time to explore the website. It
contains information for both current and potential members. You can easily update your
email and street addresses using the link in the bottom right corner.

Each One, Reach One. Have you viewed the video? Its time to invite another educator to
join DKG!

The fall edition of the California Connection was sent by email on September 13th. Did you
receive it? Did you read it? Check your spam folder and old email addresses if you did not
receive it. (Mine was sent to my non-DKG email address.) Let your chapter president know if
you did not receive the newsletter, and she and I can forward one to you. You can update
your email and street addresses on the home page of dkgcalifornia.org to ensure that the
California Connection and other important documents reach you!

DKG California Update, cont
Are you ready to take on a more active role in
the leadership of DKG California? If so, I
encourage you to apply for one of the many
state leadership positions available for 2017-
2019. Committee members plan for the year
ahead and interact with other committees to
ensure the Society progresses toward the
fulfillment of the Seven Purposes. We meet as
an entire team in late June and mid-January.
Most expenses are paid. A search of
committees on the website will reveal the
areas of participation available. Not sure what
committee to be on? Just indicate that you
are willing to accept any position. The
recommendation form can be found under
November 1st deadlines.
The next DKG California State Convention will
take place at the LAX Marriott Hotel May 5-7,
2017. During the convention there will be
Professional Development programs for both
teachers and students in teacher training
programs. The planning committee needs your
recommendations for presenters. Also, a
variety of special interest sessions are always
enjoyed by convention goers. Perhaps you or a
friend has a special interest, idea, focus, or
talent you would like incorporated into the
Interest Session program. Applications for both
Professional Development and Interest Sessions
are available on the DKG California website.
The deadline for applications is November 1,
2016.
Two awards with upcoming application
deadlines are worth noting. The Dorothy M.
Miller Memorial Scholarship Fund is awarded to
a DKG California member for graduate study in
the field of special education. Contact a
member of the Scholarship Committee for
more information. The Penne Ferrell grants are
available to women educators in their first
through third year of an assignment. Perhaps
your chapters past student teacher award
recipients are now qualified for this award. Or a
friend, relative or co-worker would deserve
some extra funds for a classroom project. More
information and the application are, you
guessed it, on the DKGCalifornia.org website.

3 International Update
Delta Kappa Gamma Society
International has a new president.
Carolynn Pittman began serving her two-year
term during Julys International Convention in
Nashville. In her message in the Sept/Oct issue
of DKG News Carolyn wrote, I want you to
consciously recall these words: I make a
difference. We make a difference. If each of
us shapes her membership by our purposes,
our mission, and our vision, we are the army of
butterflies fostering and creating the best
opportunities. My promise is to focus on
making this a thriving, meaningful Society that
contributes to a strong future. Are you and
your chapter living by the Seven Purposes of
DKG? If so, you have the power to influence
and support others and your community.

For the next installment of words that
often come to mind when we think of
leading a group as presented during the
Leading Activities for Chapters and States,
interest session at the 2016 international
convention we continue with the letter E of
the word Leader.
Energizing: Energize your team members by
giving them clear defined goals and tools
that allow them to have clarity, confidence,
and sense of control within their areas of
responsibility.
Ethics: Behave under ethic principles. Your
behavior becomes the real performance
standards that your team member will
follow. They will assume it's appropriate to
do whatever they do. So, it is critical to set
the proper example and desired tone.
Acting with ethics will define your success
and will determine how you will be judged.

Empathy: Show empathy when members
are facing personal problems, show you
care, take the time to listen to them, ask
questions about their job, their family, do
something special to boost their spirits. Smile
frequently.

Delta Iota Chapter was excited about their
October meeting. They initiated two
members and decorated pumpkins with
succulents. As always, we encourage our
members to bring a guest or two.

Eta Eta got off to a good start with a potluck
at Ellie Burton's home on September 12. We
got caught up on everyone's news and
finished our calendar for 2016-2017. On
Saturday, October 8 we have a joint
breakfast with Beta Delta at the Broken Yolk
in Oceanside. The speaker is Dana Bristol-
Smith, Executive Director of Leap to Success,
a women's empowerment organization. Our
Greens fundraiser will have an information
table.
On November 7, we will meet at Eileen
Dragula's home. The speaker will be Janet
Bryant talking about the process of writing a
mystery novel.
On December 8, we will be at Vera Dean
Nance's home for our annual Christmas
party. Vera Dean will give a Women in
History program on Annie Web Blanton.
On January 10, Eta Eta will be at Mary Ellen
Jones' home with a program by Sandy Bell
on Global Awareness.
Carolyn Woodard will host the February
7th meeting with a favorite book share by
each member.
March 18 is the Area X event at the Twin
Oaks Golf Club with non-fiction author,
Sandie Bonurna.
Debby Parks will host the April 11 meeting
with member Eileen Dragula showing
pictures and talking about her trip to Israel.
The May 1 meeting is to TBA. On June
3, Carolyn Woodard will host a planning
breakfast for the next year.

Eta Chi Chapter

Eta Chi is gearing up for a great new year!
Our Road Scholar trip has been moved to
Spring Break to allow more members to
come along We will be going to
Cumberland Falls, Kentucky to enjoy the
color, music, and history of the Appalachian
Mountains. We will be hosting another "Out
of Meeting Experience" at Domaine Artefact
Winery in Escondido in early November. Join
us for the fun!
Our chapter will be revisiting our fundraising
events this year. Last year's Barnes and Nobel
book fair was a lot of work for a small return.
Our Christmas party silent auction is our
biggest winner, but we continue to look for
ways to bring in money from outside the
chapter.

with our renewed focus to support new
teachers. A list of new teachers was
provided to members at our September
meeting so our members could select
specific teachers to support.
We have several fun activities planned. At
our October meeting members will be able
to decorate small pumpkins in a fall motif
that will last through the Thanksgiving
holiday. At our November meeting we will
have a local caterer show us how to prepare
a wonderful and healthful fall themed meal
that we can eat, too! One very popular
activity is our Holiday dinner and auction
held at a local restaurant. One of our
members is a perfect auctioneer! Traditional
community service activities for our chapter
are the Jared Box project and our literacy
project, where we collect books for children
to distribute throughout our community. One
way we do this is by distributing them to
waiting rooms, and we also give them out to

Zeta Pi Chapter

Zeta Pi Chapter committees are busily
planning their programs for the year. Each
member serves on a committee, and each
committee prepares the program for an
assigned month. We kicked off the year with
a program about journaling our memoirs and
adventures in words and pictures. The artists
love their sketchbooks while others enjoy
writing journals. We have compelling lives
that should be treasured in written memoirs.
With elections approaching, our Legislation
Committee is planning our October meeting
with a guest from the Womens League of
Voters. We enjoy tackling the large booklet
of propositions with someone who can
explain them!
Our Fundraising Committee started planning
our fall Silent Auction with the theme,
Harvest Holiday Bazaar.

year teachers in Vista and Oceanside. You
dont want to miss this fun event with Zeta Pi
sisters!
Christmas turns us into party animals. Carrie
Gamble hosts our traditional Christmas party
at her lovely home. We laugh, eat, swap
gifts, and enjoy a fun-filled evening.
Our Professional Growth Committee has
invited Sandy Bell as our guest speaker in
January. She will inform our Chapter about

World Fellowship.
In February we will fill our usual 60+ Jared
Boxes to take to the military families. This
has been a traditional highlight of our year.
It is an awesome experience to witness the
generosity of our members! We stay busy
with our own volunteer work and help with
Susie Bristows Teen Parent Program by
providing items for the students and babies.
So much more lies ahead for our enthused
members. To all, have a wonderful year!
