TOPICS: Transition Phrases
CC.1.4.3.J: Create an organizational structure that includes reasons linked in a logical order with a
concluding statement or section.
Objectives
Objectives correspond with PA State Common Core Standards listed above (SWBAT)
I will start by having the class come to the back rug. I will ask the class who has ever heard of the word
transition before? Students will raise their hands and give examples such as about going different places in
school or moving on to the next subject. I will explain how with every paragraph we need to ensure with every
new paragraph we need to wrap up the paragraph before moving on. I will refer back to my example from
yesterdays lesson on being ready, respectful, and responsible. I explain how I started each body paragraph by
explaining how I used Another reason, my second reason, or Lastly in each of my paragraphs to start. I
will ask my students whether they think it would make sense to continue the sentence with the paragraph before
and whether each student agrees. I will call on a student who said no that it doesnt make sense and ask why
they think that. Once the students hear why others believe they wouldnt make sense to continue and why they
are needed to start a new part or section of their writing I will hand out a page of transition words. On the page
the students will have options they can use of phrases along with sections of where to use them in each
paragraph. Then I will have them return to their desks with their writers notebooks and writers folder.
