Initial domain controller installation

1. Star Windows Server 2008 R2 installation

2. Accept default settings and click Next

3. At the next step click Install now button


4. Chose adequate operating system edition and click Next
(e.g. Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise (full installation))

5. Accept license agreement by checking I accept the license terms and click Next
6. Click on Custom (advanced) option

7. Configure required partition depending on hard disk presence (recommendation: two


partitions, first for system and other for installations and backup purposes, Note: System
Reserved partition is created automatically I you should not change that) and click Next

8. Wait until installation finishes ( during the installation process computer may reboot several
times)
9. Click OK to set Administrative password

10. Enter administrative password two times and press ENTER on keyboard
11. Click OK to acknowledge password setup

12. After initial logon click on Set time zone


13. Chose Change time zone
14. From drop down menu select local time zone and press OK twice

15. Cilck on Configure Networking


16. If there are multiple adapters rename and disable disconnected adapter to Spare and right
click connected adapter and select Proporties
17. Select Internet Protokol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and press Properties button. Enter prepared
TCP/IP configuration according to project plan and click OK

NOTE: If you intend to promote this computer as Microsoft Active Directory Domain
Controller, you should set IP address and preferred DNS server with the same address

18. Chose Internet Protokol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) and click Properties button. For IP address
and DNS server enter converted IPv4 settings, DO NOT enter Default gateway and click OK
NOTE: Conversion of IPv4 address to IPv6 address is easy to do using this tool

19. Click Close and close opened window


20. ChoseProvide computer name and domain
21. Click Change
22. Enter computer name and click OK twice and Close once

23. Click Restart Later


24. Click Enable automatic updating and feedback

25. Chose Manually configure settings


26. In section Windows automatic updating click Change Setting

27. Turn off automatic updates , and turn on Give me recommended updates the same way I
receive important updates and click OK
28. In section Windows Error Reporting click Change setting
29. Chose option I dont want to participate, and dont ask me again and click OK
30. Click Close

31. Chose option Enable Remote Desktop


32. Chose option Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop
(less secure), and then click on Windows Firewall with Advanced Security link in newly
opened message
33. Click on Windows Firewall Properties
34. On Domain Profile, Private Profile i Public Profile tabs change Firewall state: to Off, and
click OK
35. Close currently opened window and click OK twice
36. Turn on checkbox Do not show this windows at logon and click Close
37. If you are prompted to reboot computer chose No

38. In Server Manager console turn on checkbox Do not show me this console at logon, and
then in section Security information click Configure IE ESC link
39. Set both parameters to Off and click OK
40. Close Server Manager console and reboot server
41. After reboot logon to server using local administrative credentials

42. Click Start and enter dcpromo in search field, and press ENTER

43. Wait for wizard to appear

44. At this screen chose Use advanced mode installation option and click Next

45. Read message and click Next


46. If you create a new domain with no existing Domain Controllers click Create a new domain
in new forest and den click Next
47. Enter domain name and click Next

48. Accept suggested NetBIOS domain name and click Next


49. Chose Forest Functional Level according to project documentation and press Next

50. Click Next


51. Click Yes

52. Click Next

53. Enter restore password twice and click Next


54. Check chosen installation options and click Next

55. Turn on option Reboot on completion and wait computer to reboot


56. Logon to server as Domain Administrator

57. Click Start and enter dnsmgmt.msc in search field, press ENTER
58. In DNS Manager console chose Advanced option from View dropdown menu

59. Right click server name and click Properties

60. On Interfaces tab turn off IPv6 adapters and leave only IPv4 address
61. On Forwarders tab click Edit

62. Enter IP addresses of DNS servers that are able to resolve Internet names (e.g.
DC1.dms.local and DC2.dms.local) and click OK twice
63. Right click Reverse Lookup Zones section and chose New Zone... option

64. Click Next


65. Click Next

66. Click Next


67. Click Next

68. Enter domain IP range and click Next


69. Click Next

70. Click Finish


71. Right click Conditional Forwarders and chose New Conditional Forwarder option

72. Enter domain name of any other zone and IP addresses of their domain controllers, turn on
Store this conditional Forwarder in Active Directory, and replicate it as follows, and then
click OK
73. Repeat last two steps for all other zones

74. Close DNS Manager console

75. In lower right corner click on two arrows symbol and chose Customize

76. Turn on checkbox Always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar and click OK
77. Pressa WIN+Pause button and then click on Change Product Key
78. Enter Product Key and click Next
79. Accept activation by clicking OK and close all open windows

80. From Start > All Programs select Windows Update


81. Click Check for updates and install all needed updates
NOTE: If it is needed reboot server and check for updates again.
