INTRODUCTION:

Ball mill is the equipment to be used for size reduction. It is a kind of grinder used for
intermediate or fine grinding. Ball mill is a metal cylinder which rotates about its horizontal
axis. The coarse sugar charged along with the metal balls breaks to fine powder by impact of
metal balls. The size reduction is actually to make the too large to be used solid materials
usable. It leads to an increase in surface area per unit volume that enhances the rate of the
reaction by allowing more sites for the reaction to take place. Moreover handling of smaller
size particles is much easier as compared to that of bigger particles. Particle size is one
of the significant parameters influencing the grinding kinetic and in
selecting of optimum ball size in ball mills. That is why it forces
researchers to describe the more accurate relationship between particle
size-grinding kinetic and particle size-optimum ball size

OBJECTIVE:

To study the concept of size reduction using ball mill

DISCUSSION:

The objective in this experiment was to learn the concept of size reduction by using
ball mill. Based on the graph of percentage of weight particles versus aperture size for coarse
sugar, the distribution of particle size was not uniform after ball milling. However, the
particle size was reduced after the ball milling. This was showed when the weight retained on
receiver after the ball milling was higher than before the ball milling. This because the ball
milling was grinding the course sugar to decrease the particle size from bigger size to smaller
size.

Next, for the average particle size of the sample. It can be measured by using the sieve
with a different arrangement of aperture size which is the bigger aperture was on top while
the smaller aperture at the bottom. Based on the result obtained, the distribution of the sugar
powder increase at the small aperture size than the biggest one because the sugar can through
smoothly the big aperture size of the sieve.

Lastly, from the graph, the size reduction of coarse sugar after ball milling showed the
differences of the distribution at each of the sieve compared to before ball milling. This is
because the device are capable of producing very fine powders but are quite energy
inefficient. Therefore, the ball milling is the one of the correct device that can be used to
reduce the particle size of the sample.

CONCLUSION:

In a conclusion, the concept of size reduction using ball mill was successfully
achieved. The ball mill usually used to grind the raw materials such as coarse sugar to reduce
the particle size of the sample especially in food industry.
