What distinguishes science fiction is the occurrence of this novum not (or not only) at the level of story
and actors but in the structure of the represented world itselfScholess representational discontinuity,
as opposed to what he calls narrational discontinuity. Or, better: not the occurrence of a single novum,
but the projection of a network of innovations. Discuss this statement in relation with Allegiant.

1.Distinguishing and interesting is the fact that even if we do know the action
takes place at a certain further period in time, the feeling that we get, or at
least that I get is that everything happens at a close time, in present times,
even though is a science-fiction film and we notice devices of evolutionary
technologies during the time of the movie.
2. Postmodernist writing has preferred to adapt science fictions motifs of temporal displacement rather
than its spatial displacements, projecting worlds of the future rather than worlds in distant galaxies.

Identify such displacements in Allegiant

How are they achieved at the level of story? [e.g. cinematography, editing]

2.In the movie the action is constructed more on a temporal displacement,

rather than on a spatial one, since we know that everything happens in
Chicago. This aspect is established via the elements of the mise-en-scene,
the look of the damaged buildings, the fact that there are two separate
worlds, but not planets, separated by a huge wall, creating a slight spatial
displacement but not a total one.

4. Dystopias or Utopias, postmodernist worlds of the future typically employ the zero degree of
temporal displacement, projecting a future time but without making any particular provision for bridging
the temporal gap between present and future; that bridge is left for the reader to build.

Is the setting in Allegiant utopian and dystopian?

4.We do not get to see what happened in the time between the past and the
present (future) action time in the movie. We could say that the setting is
both a Utopia, everything being imagined, something that is far from actually
happening, but not excluded totally, and also a Dystopia since the temporal
displacement does not seem to of such a magnitude, as stated in the answers
for the 1st subject, the feeling that we get is that of action taking place in
present times, even though it is clear that it is at a further distance in time.
5. In the most typical (and stereotypical) science-fiction contexts, worlds should be understood literally
as planets, and confrontation between worlds as interplanetary travel. Another worlds intrusion into this
one.

What kind of worlds are brought into collision in the film? How is this performed? Is this a strength or
weakness in the film?

5.Unlike ordinary SF movies in which the plot is structure on the fight

between two separate worlds (planets), mostly aliens vs earthlings, in
Allegiant, the fight is between two separate worlds (dimensions/populations)
separated by a huge wall, it is more a world defined by ordinary people (poor,
on whom an experiment is undergoing) and the other dimension consisting of
the elevated people, the rich ones, the ones that are ruling both dimensions
and whom are conducting the experiment. Indeed, we can see that there are
some things that seem to be of an extraterrestrial matter living within the
world behind the wall.

Analyse the film from the perspective of genre specificity. How does your expertise
with the SF influence the spectacle of the film and your perception?

Science fiction Subject matter

Futuristic technologies/future worlds
Fantasy Impossible worlds/fantastical characters
Disaster Natural or man-made catastrophe

6. I dont usually enjoy watching SF movies, but sometimes I pick some titles
when I just want something different. Most of the SF movies are centered on
the conflict between two different civilizations or planets or they tackle
subjects as man going to colonize a new planet.
Allegiant is different. There is no fight between such things or such themes tackles.
In fact, it tackles a common element in my opinion, the wealth vs. poor, but in a
different manner. We see two dimensions being separated by a huge wall, ones are
living in wealth and others are poor, trying to survive each day fighting the
atrocities that live throws at them. Even if it is a SF movie and we do notice
technology that belongs to the future, the feeling that we get is a common one, like
anything that happens is set in a close future. The temporal displacement is not
that huge, and it helps the viewers connect with the characters and emphasize with
them.
7. Identify elements of narrative poetics [you may refer to the following: story / plot,
focalization, character, themes/motifs/symbols, ending].

7. Somehow i think i answered this in all of the other questions, even though
it might not be acurated it is my personal understanding of the action of the
film and it is a subjective analysis of such elements, rather than searching for
the actual themes/motifs/symbols etc. on the internet.
8. Fiction and filmic narrators
Identity the narrative perspective/voice in the novel. Identity the markers of the
novels narrator and give examples.
What is the filmic narrator in Robert Schwentkes film?

8. In my opinion, Tris and Four are the narrators of the movie, since they are
the main characters of this installment in the franchise. We see and analyze
everything happening in the movie through their perspective and by actually
trying to emphasize with their situation.
